Why Games Based Around Movies and TV Shows Usually Suck

It’s a known fact around the gaming community that video games based around specific movies and TV show series usually suck. Of course like any other controversy there are a select few titles based around these things that some players do enjoy but let’s be honest here most of them do really suck. So the question is why when we enjoy watching the show or movie so much does the game turn out to be so bad?

I was actually a huge fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean game. It was original and had a classic flare to it but the graphics weren’t great or anything but still found a lot of enjoyment out of it. Make fun of me if you want but I honest to god wish there was a sequel. Have to agree tho most other games based on movies suck... dont even get me started on iron man the game x)

Oh god I think iron man was the worst. I don't plan on playing any games based on movies ever

iron man and superman the game was really really bad. Im not even sure why i played them. i also hated eragon. CSI could have been worse. when its compared to NCIS then CSI was the best game ever lol

I actually enjoyed the Superman Returns game, it had a 'it's so bad it's good' feel to it haha.

I am truly waiting for one game that is just absolutely amazing that comes from a film, which would require the film people to collaborate with a good well known developer without rushing the game out so it is available at movie launch or work far in advance on the game.

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay basically did this. The CoR movie was meh (Pitch Black is great though), but the game was amazing and is definitely the best movie tie-in game ever made. Great story, gameplay, amazing graphics at the time, and stayed more in tone with Pitch Black's style than the actual CoR movie did.

It also pretty much put Starbreeze on the map, who later went on the develop The Darkness, another great game.

Yeah largely they do suck but there have been s few flukes such as the wolverine game

It's usually because they're just cash-ins loosely based on the movie. They also have short development times. Also, they are bound by the source material and don't allow developers to make a great game. Finally, like the author said, the budget is low.

Because they were built from the ground up to be movies and shows, not to be innovative gameplay products. So its hard to translate them into the video game format.
