Kotaku - We play video games for a number of reasons. Sometimes we need to kill time on the subway. Sometimes we want to pretend to be other people. Sometimes we crave that emotional gratification that you can only find in interactive entertainment.
"There's no time to wander. No time to contemplate. No time to be bored." Basically the experience needs pacing? I think it's true for a lot of games though. Games actually have great power to provoke reflection - narratives like Dear Esther, Portal 1 and minecraft are all great examples of games being able to provide a calm meditative environment. I reckon it's to do with basic meditation. Simple forms of meditation often involve some mindless simple action or exercise that stimulates enough brain power to actually distract the rest into resting giving a sense of calm. I've seen people use everything from juggling to rolling... cigarettes... to fill this role. Is it any surprise games - especially rpgs - tap into this? I don't know about you but borderlands didn't strike me as a game that was particularly astounding but there's something about blasting spider ants to the beat of a song in a mindless repetitive fashion that is not only not irritating but actually very satisfying. I guess this is just one of the many things games can touch upon which makes them pretty amazing.
