I think we gamers like different clothing,weapons,hair and what ever else we can get is to make our characters more personal. We like to say to other gamers look at my character I just got this new armor or what ever else we get.

Yuup, making it personal, mould the character into a person that fits our preference and therefore more relatable. Are you willing to pay for different costumes however?
