GameDynamo - "More often than not, a sequel can't beat the original. In fact, some people prefer to leave things be and not see their favorite movie or game ruined by a follow-up that may bring nothing to the table but pain. Still, everyone should be given the benefit of the doubt, as in some cases a sequel has helped the developers redeem themselves and fix what wasn't perfect, turning an already excellent product into a AAA masterpiece. Here are some examples in the world of video games."
Rockstar Games had considered making Red Dead Redemption and GTA movies at one point, but had ultimately dropped the idea.
Both would make more sense as a series than as movies, though I think Red Dead would be far easier to adapt.
RDR would work really well. From the GTA universe, IV would work really well because of how gritty and realistic the story is.
RDR 1 was a great game, but the lack of screen time for some characters, boring horse riding, and lack of mission variety takes away the fun at times.
Yeah
It's as good as you remember
Feels like one of those "10 HARSH realities of Re-watching" articles
I liked it a bit better because I didn’t think it had many “small nitpicky” things RDR2 had that on its own meant nothing but when a lot built up it was annoying. For example getting off your horse and you had to reselect your weapons again or walking around the camp slowly. None issues but built up with others sometimes it was a little frustrating at times.
Behind the aimbots that have plagued Team Fortress 2, a far more sinister story of harassment has unfolded - and it's only getting worse.
All of these were excellent sequels, though some of them (Read Dead, MGS) were so far removed from their prior entries that they were practically franchise reboots.
That said, I'm surprised to see no Zelda title on the list. ALttP was a huge leap over Zelda 2, and OoT was another successful transition. Speaking of Nintendo, Mario 64 also pretty much defined 3D platforming.
Oh, and GTA3. Hard to ignore that one. And for our current generation, COD4 is probably the most influential sequel. OK, I'll stop there. Too many sequels...
street fighter 2 turbo
Just Cause 2
Ah. Super Metroid, you never cease to bring back pleasant memories.
I don't agree with the Team Fortress Classic being an improved sequel. Not a fan of the cartooney approach that the newer TFC displayed, and the original wasn't a mod for Quake it was a Half-Life mod that far outlived the online aspect of Half-Life. How did they get that wrong?
Street Fighter 2 over Street Fighter is probably the most notable one there for me.
