Play.com became the latest internet retailer to report bumper Christmas sales as the migration away from the high street to online continues.
The entertainment retailer, which is the second largest online shop in the UK after Amazon, reported sales growth of 24 per cent in the three months to the end of December.
At the company's peak trading time on Monday 3 Decem-ber the website processed 700 orders per minute, up from 422 at the same stage in 2006.
Just under one million users visited the site during that day and over the month sales grew 29 per cent year on year.
The figures provide further evidence that more shoppers are buying their gifts from the comfort of their own homes rather than battling the high street in the run up to Christmas.
