US Republicans want tobacco-style labels for games, 'links with aggression'

Republican congressmen Joe Baca of California and Frank Wolf of Virginia have proposed a bill to have health warning labels attached to games, much like cigarette packs carry.

They want a 'violent video games linked to aggressive behaviour' sticker. Baca claims the games industry has "repeatedly failed" to live up to their responsibilities over warnings.

how about banning guns? i always remember a news item i saw from America. it was to do with a shooting and it was linked to the film 'Chuckie'. there was footage of them shutting a video shop down that stocked the film, but in that footage the shop next to it was a gun shop... what a strange culture

waltyftm2402d ago

As long as they put these stickers on every other form of media then i don't see a problem, but just sticking them on games is pure fail.

jony_dols2402d ago

As long as Fox News & Republican TV commercials come with a Jackass style viewer warning, proclaiming that it is only for the ignorant and the stupid, then they can put what they want on video game boxes!

SeanScythe2402d ago

Shut Up, banning guns is like banning cars. More people die from stupid people driving then stupid people with guns.

Moncole2402d ago

People who have guns are in control. People in cars aren't always in control because people can run in front of a car.

Parapraxis2402d ago (Edited 2402d ago )

No, not the same at all.

frelyler2402d ago

So laughtner was in control? How about the school shootings were they in control? Anyways, I see more hate and bile spewed from Republicans than any other source out there. Republicans hate gays, hate black people and don't give two cents about the middle class. How about we put a label on Republicans and the dangers of getting brain damage by listening to them "talk."

Joey Naylor: what happens when you're wrong?
Nick Naylor: Whoa, Joey I'm never wrong.
Joey Naylor: But you can't always be right...
Nick Naylor: Well, if it's your job to be right, then you're never wrong.
Joey Naylor: But what if you are wrong?
Nick Naylor: OK, let's say that you're defending chocolate, and I'm defending vanilla. Now if I were to say to you: 'Vanilla is the best flavour ice-cream', you'd say...
Joey Naylor: No, chocolate is.
Nick Naylor: Exactly, but you can't win that argument... so, I'll ask you: so you think chocolate is the end all be all of ice-cream, do you?
Joey Naylor: It's the best ice-cream, I wouldn't order any other.
Nick Naylor: Oh! So it's all chocolate for you is it?
Joey Naylor: Yes, chocolate is all I need.
Nick Naylor: Well, I need more than chocolate, and for that matter I need more than vanilla. I believe that we need freedom. And choice when it comes to our ice-cream, and that Joey Naylor, that is the defintion of liberty.
Joey Naylor: But that's not what we're talking about
Nick Naylor: Ah! But that's what I'm talking about.
Joey Naylor: ...but you didn't prove that vanilla was the best...
Nick Naylor: I didn't have to. I proved that you're wrong, and if you're wrong I'm right.
Joey Naylor: But you still didn't convince me
Nick Naylor: It's that I'm not after you. I'm after them.
[points into the crowd]

Thank You For Smoking, one of the greatest movies of all time for this scene alone. This is all these companies do. They are always wrong, but they come up with ways to make it look like everyone else is wrong, and if everyone else looks wrong, then they are right.

SilentNegotiator2402d ago

"Republicans hate gays, hate black people and don't give two cents about the middle class"

What a load of crap. Republicans hate black people?! How ignorant can you be?

SeanScythe2402d ago

@Moncole Ok lets say you are right, lets take 30% of them are out of control, that still more people killed by cars apposed to guns.

A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000.
(Yes, that's 80 million..)
(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.

Deaths per 100,000 population: 38.4
Cause of death rank: 5

Unintentional fall deaths

Number of deaths: 24,792
Deaths per 100,000 population: 8.1

There is NOTHING wrong with guns. They just need better screening. I live in Canada and own several firearms. They are fun to shot and is a sport. If someone is going to kill some one they are going to do it regardless of the tool. Might as well ban knives everywhere. Ban baseball bats too. The whole guns are evil thing is blown way out of proportion and it is a FACT that the states that have carry permits are the safest states in the country Oh and not to mention...countries that ban firearms see an dramatic increase in crime after the pass. Do some research people. Done just follow what the media says...

Deputydon2402d ago (Edited 2402d ago )

In Virgin, Utah it is Mandatory for the head of the household to own a gun. And once they actually got that passed, the crime rate dropped by a decent amount, although it was a small town. Plus it's Utah, everyone that lives in Utah is insane, watch SLC Punk for proof.

But in essence, you are correct. The more government tries to ban things, the more it backfires. The 'war on drugs' is a complete fail in the United States. We have spent trillions of dollars putting people in prison for an ounce of weed, the money to hold those prisoners comes from TAX PAYERS. This is one area that Ron Paul knows what he is talking about. He has been advocating the end of the war on Drugs since the 80's. It is a complete fail. It gives power back to the drug lords and allows for them to prosper off selling product for high prices since they are the only way to get it.

But ending the war on drugs will never happen, similar to how Paul's foreign policy will never happen. The media won't allow it because the media is funded by the banks. The media only gets viewers if there is something 'exciting' going on in the world. Imagine if the United States news networks didn't have drugs or War to talk about all the time...

SeanScythe2402d ago

Well Said bubble for you. The only people that would hurt from banning guns are the ones that follow the law.

Criminals DON'T follow the law so what good is banning something if they break that law?

"Well it would make it harder to get..." No it wouldn't!

CarlosX3602402d ago

Oh, no, not again. Not another Joseph Liberman!

We already have ESRB, what the hell is this guy rambling about!?

One would think that ESRB was enough, but not Joe Baca!

Get him disbarred!

American politicans, showing their intelligence again.

ginsunuva2402d ago

They just need to pass something of some sort to make it look like they're doing something, and then get reelected because they'd be jobless without their position. American politics is broken.

Also, violent games don't produce violent behavior, but they are very effective at INDUCING already present, but dormant, violent behavior inside people.

And why do all adults think all games are children's toys?

StayStatic2402d ago (Edited 2402d ago )

They should put these labels on politicians instead.

'links with idiocy'

Mythicninja2402d ago

Yeah, ban guns. Because freedom from the british empire was secured with sticks and strong words. Thoughtless comment is thoughtless.
