His assumption is that CoD is the only game in the market. Whatthefrag?
For a RPG and everything solo with a story gamer like me, the likes of BF3 is as hardcore as it gets.
killzone 3 is boss! And now that some of it is free, the multi-player is great!
What about Hard Reset?
Intense, tough, and gorgeous, all with that old school all out feel.
Hard reset, painkiller and it's many sequels, Serious sam HD, Serious Sam 3, counter strike (still going strong), quake live (still going strong too), l4d on expert, ARMA II - there are lots of games out there that will give you a run for your money when put on the higher difficulty settings.
But you're right - games designed to cater to hardcore fans of fps are dying out. This is because the crowded market pushes a sort of sink or swim policy onto most fps games so they're either totally indie (like hard reset) or completely triple-A. If it's triple-A then it needs to justify its budget by reaching the most people which once again kind of disqualifies it from being "hardcore" according to your definition.
But basically yes the fps market has been squeezed quite badly compared to what it used to be like. But saying that there are still plenty of titles if you're looking to get your face punched in by a computer game. In particular the multiplayer oldies like counter strike and quake - the people still roaming those servers take their shit VERY seriously.
