Shenmue HD Re-Releases Can Only Help Shenmue III's Chances

1UP- Shenmue is one of those beloved franchises that, as much as they love it, many fans have accepted will never be seen again short of dusting off a Dreamcast. Yet there might be a chance for the series to be revived in some capacity through Sega's HD classic game re-releases.

I want a Shenmue HD Collection Disc Release.

Tdmd4420d ago

Yeah, me too! I want to have it on disc, not download it.

Tainted Gene4420d ago

I really hope they do release the HD remakes and Shenmue 3 eventually.

I was a teenager when i bought Shenmue 1 on release day. I will like to finish the entire sage before my 50's..... sighs.

Revealed: Sega's cancelled Shenmue HD remake - with fully updated graphics

From Digital Foundry: "Shenmue - a game of discovery and adventure. It's a timeless classic and one with a deep and fascinating history - which becomes even more compelling today. As we know, Sega tasked UK developer d3t with remastering Shenmue and its sequel for the current generation consoles and PC. What we received was a good game that brought classic Shenmue to today's machines, albeit with visuals based almost exclusively on the original AM2 assets. But what we now know is that prior to completing this work, plans were afoot for something considerably more ambitious - a comprehensive remake with completely revamped artwork more in step with the capabilities of the host platforms. We've seen it and today, you will too."

A massive shame. It's something I wish I never found out about, now I'm going to be constantly be thinking about what could have been when it comes to this collection.

It makes sense though, I mean sales for this collection showed how niche this seres is. There's a strong vocal community but unfortunately sales suggest little interest, which is a shame because I think this series really could be realized in today's game design. It really is a case of a game being way ahead of its time back in the day.

I'm a huge Shenmue fan and wouldve gladly bought the Shenmue collection had it been a remake but I didnt want to go back to them old clunky controls,I'm sure a lot of people who passed on the collection wouldve bought it had it been a remake...I get what you are saying and I'm definitely not saying you are wrong at all,I'm sure a remake wouldve done much better than the ported collection but I still doubt it wouldve been worth the time and money invested in the end..in other words,I definitely dont blame Sega for not going the remake route but I'm still a lil salty they didn't..lmao

343_Guilty_Spark2017d ago

I would have bought it but see no need to exactly for the reason you stated. I had Shenmue ages ago on DC and it certainly was ahead of it time, however, a few things in the game haven’t aged well...controls, combat, etc etc.

Lynx02072017d ago (Edited 2017d ago )

I was a fan when they released S. and SII. But now? It looks ugly, and the gameplay is so oldschool it looks like a student made project. So there is no surprise it is so niche. I'm sure that new Shenmue will be a flop (comercial-wise).

princejb1342017d ago

yup i been saying this for a long time this game is more hype than talk
i played the original and they were ok at best
is no wonder sega was hesitant for a remake, but now we got it and the sales speak for itself

Had they gone full HD remake, interest in the product would have naturally been higher. A great majority of the modern gaming community just isn't interested in games with old looking graphics, despite the quality of the game itself, unfortunately.

Oh well it wouldn't had made the games any less boring and tedious

Marcello2017d ago (Edited 2017d ago )

Holy crap Sega !! what have you done :O just when things were finally simmering down after 17 years. This news should never have released. Sega should stuck it a crate and hidden it in Area 51 next to the Ark of the Covenant.

I dont believe in curses & all that stuff but this game is cursed. FACT!!!
