Kotaku's 2007 Games of the Year and Overall Game of the Year

Kotaku's Brian Crecente writes:

"Our first-ever Game of the Year awards was a pretty straight forward deal. I asked all of the writers to submit a list of three games for each category and the three that showed up most in each category made it as a finalist. Once we had the list of finalists I asked each writer to go through and order the finalists and then tallied the vote. The one with the most points was named Game of the Year, the runner-up was named Not Quite Game of the Year. The game with the most votes for Worst Game of the Year received that dubious honor."

Super Mario Galaxy won Kotaku's Overall Game of the Year award. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune came as second, it won the Not Quite Game of the Year award. (Kotaku posted the overall results as a separate post, see the link at the Alternative Sources below for more details.)

I didn't know that Odin Sphere was that great. I mean, Persona 3 was awesome, I'll have to try this one out I guess.

What idiots at Kotaku. Stop with the LAIR bashing already. Maybe a lot of people didn't like the controls but it definitely can't be considered the worst PS3 game of the year. The controls just take a brain to get used to. Maybe they aren't smart enough to play it. I see a lot of terrible PS3 games that should get that award. A bunch of lazy 360 ports.

I'll have to agree with you. Lair is not the worst. I would had picked Harry Potter...that game was HORRIBLE. I picked it up for $20 and I must say that was the worst 20 bucks spent ever.

That's pretty pleasing news. I'm sure a lot of people will be mad regarding SMG's victory, but I'm just happy to see that Uncharted is beginning to get the recognition it deserves.

Uncharted is good but I'd give Ratchet & Clank Future Game of the Year over it. They need to flip those two.

Nice find and winners. I'd add Mass Effect as 360's runner up as well as a nod for COD4 but overall, solid. I hope BioShock wins overall GOTY.

Interesting results. I figured GoW II would be a shoe in for GOTY PS2, but it looks like their writers like Odin Sphere better. And glad that Uncharted got some recognition. It is a kickass game.

no, it's not perfect, and the controls take a while to get used to, but the music, story, and art design was great, and once i got past a particularly frustrating mission, i had become a frigging dragon *MASTER when it came to controlling the dragon. but of course, it's the in thing to bash Lair, especially from people who have *NEVER EVEN PLAYED IT. at least i can say i gave it a shot, beat it, and was pleasantly surprised by the game that was there, if not blown away. a solid 7/10. i'd give it an 8/10-8.5/10 if Factor 5 would get their heads out of their @sses and release a patch for it to support analog controls for the whiners.

Odin Sphere was *GREAT, but so was God of War 2. great choices, and i'm also torn on which one i'd put at GOTY; Odin Sphere was new and fresh, however, but God of War 2 *REALLY perfected what the original God of War laid down.

Uncharted is also my PS3 game of the year, and for a few reasons. top most being, it's a new IP. i *LOVED Ratchet and Clank Future, and i've logged more than 40 hours between the two games, so i got my moneys worth, and i'm *STILL not finished with them both (getting all the medals and skill points so i can unlock everything). Uncharted had a more complete story, better graphics (but that's like trying to choose between Scarlet Johansen and Angelina Jolie; you win either way), and it's hybrid gameplay was a bit more polished.

Bioshock was nice to see as the 360 game of the year, because it is, really, one of the best games ever made, and for me, at least, much more enjoyable than my time with Mass Effect, and Halo 3, and the other big guns MS released this year. every 360 owner needs Bioshock in their library. period. hell, every gamer needs it in their library, unfortunately, not all of us have a PC that can run it, or a 360. a PS3 version would be welcome, but i'm not holding my breath. incredible game.

overall, my two games of the year are Uncharted and Bioshock, and i'm torn over which one i think deserves it.

Bioshock has more depth (no pun intended), but Uncharted is more polished (especially in the visuals department). both are strong in atmosphere and mood, and the music and sound design are phenomenal. it's a hard choice. point being, 360 and PS3 owners have two remarkable games to enjoy this year.

People are saying Kotaku bashes PS3 and yet the 360 is further down the list of platforms than Sony ones.... Sony systems are all higher on the list than 360.

and It sucks A$$.....................I will agree great graphics, great music, good story...but the controls was unexcusable.....a game of this caliber should have had better controls......

--There is no way this game should have been released knowing that the controls were not even close to acceptable.....Many other companies has implemented motion control to perfection on the PS3 ie: Folklore,R&C,Uncharted.... ....WarHawk...there is no excuse for sloppy controls on a game that was suppose to be AAA title.........

--I feel the controls was an after thought....and forced on to the mass gaming public......
