A chart from statista.com compares global first-week sales of handheld game consoles such as the Playstation Vita and the Nintendo 3DS. The Nintendo DS was sold 1.34 million times in its first week.
Europe is such a bizarre region in terms of console sales. Sega and Sony consoles that don't sell as well other places tend to do disproportionately better there. Interesting study in the works, perhaps.
Europe is an interesting region. I author a series of books under an alias, and they sold substantially better in Europe during the first few months of release. It was strange. It's the same book and title in both regions (US/UK), but UK peeps just seem to turn out more sales.
Over a 0.13M difference to its 8th gen competitor?
lol
It'll pick up when it gets a price drop, but you can't exactly estimate its success over a week. It might do just fine with the right advertisement. Who knows?
Pretty good result for Vita, considering everything. The real test is sustaining those sales. With more games becoming avaliable, I think it should do okay.
The winners are the ones most happy with their systems. When I worked at (insert crappy video game retailer here) I never so many people disappointed after they had picked up their 3DS at launch. Now that there has been a price drop and better selection of games it's probably a different story. I was just really surprised at how pissed off people were at that time.
I seriously don't care Since when us gamers care about sales? Am I Nintendo? Am I Sony? No I am not, I don't win anything out of who has the most sales. This generation has always talked about sales... Since when sales determine if a system is good or not?
Is a Renault Clio better than a Ferrari because it has more sales?
What we should check to see if a system is better, is the inside of it, the hardware, not sales!
I think it's interesting that the 3DS sold- according to the chart- 130,000 more in its first week than the Vita, which may be most telling to the difficult circumstances the Vita's currently finding itself in. After all, it's competing against the 3DS, the PSP, previous DS iterations and, according to analysts who don't know any better, tablets and smartphones.
It's also having to face the 3DS having Monster Hunter come out AND undergo a recent price drop- at least it was temporarily down to $169- and people, in general, spending less money. Given ALL of that that's going on, I think the Vita's numbers are even more impressive.
(It'd also be interesting to see how all those "Vita will flop; 3DS is better people" will take the fact that the PSP and DS- but especially the PSP- did better in the first week. But that's another story for another time, I suppose.)
To be sure, first week sales don't indicate much of anything. And who knows? In a couple of months, the Vita may shoot off like the 3DS did, eve without a price drop. It's more likely that it'll do the typical Sony slow-burn and gradually reach amazing numbers over time, but anything can happen.
First week of Vita? Which week? The was the early release bundle on Feb 15 and a full release on Feb 22. Which week? Article doesn't state the actual week....vague, poorly written article.
USA was 160K sales, 172K for all of North America. Europe was 294K. Week 1 sales combined for all markets for the Vita launch week sales are only 800K.

Poor Nomad :(

Also, a nice price cut would help.
who won? who cares....
