GameStop CEO: 'Sony and Microsoft could have cut us off a long time ago'

Vox: 5

Today, GameStop announced that it is selling refurbished iPhones, iPads and iPod touch media players at over 1,000 brick and mortar stores. Actually, GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines tells me that there are technically 1,175 stores with iOS devices, as of our interview yesterday morning. It seems like a strange business for a video game retailer to be in, but to Raines, it makes perfect sense: he's got a 200,000 square foot facility in Grapevine, Texas employing 1,700 people to refurbish Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo consoles. Why not add a few phones and tablets to the mix?

ME: "Do you have a copy of x game?"
GS: "..Yeah"
ME: "Nice! be there soon"
...get to the store, there's one copy left and they try to sell me an opened game as new for $60!?

There's a difference between 'never been played' and 'brand new', the latter is new the former has never been played.

Theoretically, if I bought a new wrapped game, opened it in the store, then changed my mind and wanted to exchange it for a different game, Gamestop would consider it used despite never being played.

Absolutely true. Especially with how many games come with exclusive DLC, or Online-passes, new.

My Gamestop says that it's policy to not have games in cases on the shelf, so they take them all out, and put them in a filefolder. (if the games recently released you'll get a sealed copy from a new stack behind the counter)

Most of the time they say they only have a few new copies, so they sell you the one that's been "on-display"

why would anyone want to open the box?? i mean there is nothing in it.

^^ couldn't agree more, See what they use to do is let the workers burrow games for who knows how long and when they bring it back they have a wrapping machine in back to make it look brand new,

I've always hated gamestop policy i'll never get over the whole used games for 5499 and new is 5999

I will never forget the day I was with my buddy and he was buying a game. He gets an opened case and asks about getting a new sealed game. She takes the game case, goes into the backroom and we listen to her shrink wrap it. My buddy is not one to take shit from anyone but we were both speechless. There was nothing we could say.
