Continuing with the subject of Stealth, we are now going to discuss another game which brought with it countless innovations in stealth game design. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell is a stealth action game developed by Ubisoft and released in 2002 for the original Xbox. In contrast to Konami’s more cinematic approach with Metal Gear, Ubisoft chose the more realistic approach to Splinter Cell. Everything from setting, character design, and technology was based on “near future” concepts.
The main character, Sam Fisher is an elite agent for the NSA’s Splinter Cell program tasked with some of the most highly sensitive operations for the US Government. From assassination to intelligence gathering, Sam Fisher was the man for the job. As mentioned before, the game brought with it many innovations in terms of mechanics and design, the first being the integration of light and shadow.
