In 1994, the release of Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage set a new standard for superhero video games.
I think Spider-Man on PS1 and later for Dreamcast, changed what gamers would later expect from a super hero game.
I played and owned games like the side scrolling Spider-Man arcade game, Spider-Man on Atari, Spider-Man on Sega Genesis, etc. But none of those had as much impact as when Spider-Man went 3D and was actually decent with voice over from Stan Lee. Leading to an awesome 3D Spider-Man 2(excluding that balloon nonsense) game that built on that change in perspective.
But for those still looking to get their side scrolling fun on, download and get Openbor and Marvel Infinity War from Zvitor and friends. You'll thank me later as there's a great storyline and too many playable characters to mention. With updates to games like Maximum Carnage and arcade Avengers built in for free. Yes. FREE. Go get it.

Just reading the name again and I can hear the soundtrack in my head. Hopefully we see Carnage in the next Spider-man game.
Carnage is my personal favorite super villain of all time. This dude is so sick he needs his own game.
