Motorola hamstringing Xbox, PC with huge patent royalties

Microsoft today filed a competition law complaint against Motorola Mobility with the European Commission, claiming that the company—and, by extension, its soon-to-be-owner Google—is charging outrageously high licensing fees for patents essential to complying with industry standards.

In a blog post titled "Google, Please Don't Kill Video on the Web," Microsoft general counsel Dave Heiner said Motorola "is attempting to block sales of Windows PCs, our Xbox game console and other products" by charging unusually high fees for patents related to the H.264 video standard. On a $1,000 laptop, Motorola wants a royalty of $22.50, Microsoft claims. Microsoft said its complaint, which is not a publicly available document, is filed against both Motorola and Google.

Good, Microsoft has been doing it for years, now someone has enough gusto and money to give it back to them.

Can't argue with that, MS is not a nice company themselves.

this could affect sony as well. wouldnt their use of the h.264 standard be brought into question? Same with Apple? In fact, pretty much any company that uses these licensed patents from Motorola would get screwed if it passed.

Its easy to target MS in this but it effects many other notable parties as well.

This is Googles revenge on Microsoft.
Google makes no up front money on their mobile phone operating system, Android. Google gives it to the phone makers for free.
Microsoft has made over half a Billion dollars on Android so far as all Android phone makes have to pay Microsoft if they use Android.
Its nuts, Microsoft makes more money off Android than Google does.
They are making more money from Android than they currently are of Windows Phone 7.

Sounds like MS will have to up the patent royalties on Android OS to make up the difference now.

Trey_4_life3372d ago

MS don't use the android OS, but you already knew this, you're just a troll.

Letros3372d ago

Lol you're dumb, I never said MS uses Android, if you had an ounce of clue about tech, you'd know what I was talking about, run back to your lunchbox little kiddie.

No Google doesn't give Android away for free, at least not all of it. If an OEM wants to build a device that has access to the Android Market and other Google services then they have to pay.

lol you mean like how you make more money off Android phones than your own mobile OS, eh Microsoft? Tough nuggets.

MS should be the last one crying after all the crap they pulled
