"Compensation" is Root of PS3 Rock Band/Guitar Hero Issue

Game Informer - by Jeff Cork, 12/20/2007:

An Activision spokeswoman has shed a little more light on the situation surrounding compatibility issues between the company's Guitar Hero III controllers and Rock Band's controllers on the PlayStation 3. Unsurprisingly, it all comes down to the almighty dollar.

Speaking to the Boston Globe, Activision spokeswoman Maryanne Lataif clarified earlier statements. "Unfortunately for Rock Band users, Harmonix has been unwilling to discuss an agreement that will allow us to provide that option in a manner that maintains the high standards people have come to expect from Activision," she told the newspaper, adding any agreement will involve Harmonix writing a check. "We believe we should be compensated for the use of our technology."

The Boston Globe has Hiawatha Bray's full report of the controller fight between Guitar Hero's Activision and Rock Band's Harmonix.

big ol' "whatever". Rock Band/Harmonix have exposed GHIII/Activision for the money grubbers they are. Thanks to Harmonix for taking the genre to next gen awesomeness.

EDIT: thanks to thornh for catching my "Christmas Brain", I meant Rock Band/Harmonix. omg, I need vacation...or more Rock Band!

Activision is the money grubber. Activision is the publisher of Guitar Hero III. Neversoft is the developer of Guitar Hero 3. Red Octane is the manufacturer of the GH III Les Paul guitar controller.

MTV/EA are the publisher's of Rock Band. Harmonix is the developer of Rock Band. Harmonix is the developer of Guitar Hero I and II for the PS2 (and GH II for the 360).

Activision needs to answer the question of the Xbox 360 versus the PS3 and if they are being compensated by MS to allow their guitars to work for Rock Band on the 360. More importantly, Activision needs to stop and realize they are hurting their relationship with the gaming public. Oh, and by the way Activision, you will be compensated because you will sell more controllers than you ever would by only allowing them to be used on GHIII.

I agree that if Rockband wants to be able to use Guitar Hero's product they should pay. Or maybe they could make an agreement for both games to be compadable with both controllers??? Would seem fair to consumers and both companies.

I wonder if they get compensated for the 360 version?

"I have been supporting Activision games since their
debut on the Atari 2600 in the late 1970's. I have
always been a fan of the company's many franchises and
would like to continue to support Activision. But
recent events surrounding the game Rock Band on the
Sony Playstation 3 have made me question my loyalty to
your employer.

Please feel free to correct any misunderstanding that
I may have of this situation. I understand that
Harmonix (creators of the Guitar Hero franchise) has
created a downloadable patch to allow the Les Paul
controller to be compatible with the PS3 version of
Rock Band. The last time I checked Rock Band was
their game and if they wanted to patch it they ONLY
needed Sony's approval. Supposedly they received that
approval. Why does Activision think they have a right
to block this patch from reaching the public? Can
Activision answer the question of why the Microsoft
Xbox 360 version of Rock Band does not have this
issue? If compensation is all you are looking for do
you not realize the potential sales increase Guitar
Hero III would see if cross compatibility were

I am the father of five wonderful children. When they

from them and move forward. This is what needs to be

bottom line."

Dear Activision,
If you let Harmonix release the patch, I might consider buying GH3 to go with Rock Band so I can use your controller with it. If you don't, I'll save that $100 and use part of it to buy another controller next year when they are available for your competitor's product. And then I'll be sure to avoid buying any other GH games you release for the ps3 as well, buying only Harmonix currently superior product.
