Spec Ops: The Line shares similarities with BioShock, says developer

Spec Ops: The Line does share similarities with BioShock, according to developer Yager.

Lead game designer Cory Davis said that there are plenty of "parallels" in the settings of both games.

"I wouldn't say that Spec Ops: The Line is 'BioShock in the desert', but it does have some similarities," he said.

"Like in BioShock, our focus has been on building a strong atmosphere for an intriguing journey into the unknown. There are also plenty of parallels between Rapture and our destroyed utopian Dubai in Spec Ops: The Line.

"Also, BioShock really gave you the feeling that water was an ever-present element of nature threatening and engulfing the characters and environment. In our game, sand becomes that element and the player experiences it quite frequently in the gameplay."

Ridiculous, comparing Spec Ops to a masterpiece like BioShock. This is one of the few games I get info on from industry friends, and all signs point negative so far. Could change things up between now and launch, but as it stands today, it's not looking good.

pr0digyZA4608d ago

From what they have said, and from what I have seen in trailers I can see where they are coming from.

The sand in a way is like the water in Bioshock (never know when it will burst through the cracks).
It also looks as if its a place of desperation where people are fighting to stay alive.
In a way then, it brings some of the ethos from bioshock (but not the gameplay).

The_Nameless_One4608d ago

I love bioshock but even that game was nothing compared to System Shock 2. Also, can you be more specific on "Industry friends"? You just come off as a troll.

Megaton4608d ago

I have no reason to troll this game. I was among those who thought the initial trailer was cool. I'm not going to jeopardize my friends' jobs by telling you who they are or what they do. Believe me or don't, it really doesn't matter.

The_Nameless_One4607d ago

@Megaton:
Seems fishy to me because all the previews from the various outlets have been extremely positive about this game.

Megaton4607d ago (Edited 4607d ago )

Have you ever seen a negative preview for any game? They're basically used as ads these days.

The_Nameless_One4607d ago

Yes I have seen bad previews. Besides listening to the various podcasts they are still very positive about it. There's really no point to this. You're just trolling for the sake of it. I'm done with you and your "industry" friends. Provide some credentials or go home.

Megaton4607d ago

I don't see why you have to get all immature and hostile. Do you accuse everyone you disagree with of trolling? Is information that contradicts your preconceived notions difficult to process?

I gain nothing from speaking positively or negatively about this game. I honestly hope it's good, since I like good games. Just relaying the things I've heard. Take them however you want.

SheenuTheLegend216d ago

all the games in the above list are bang on. this is the only reason we need backwards compatibility and physical presense of games for the upcoming future, no matter what.

Yi-Long217d ago

Honorable mention to the excellent Driveclub, one of the best racing games of all-time and one of my favourite games ever.

melons217d ago

yes! incredible rain effects; so good to drive along in rain with your Spotify playlist blaring

Skuletor217d ago

I really wanted a MotorStorm using the same engine, Driveclub is easily one of the best looking games on PS4 and I'm surprised they didn't even give it a PS4 Pro patch.

ravens52216d ago

Yes indeed. May just install it on my PS5. You know, physical copy and all.

monkey602216d ago

I adored Driveclub and the Bike expansion. I also loved Motorstorm. Evolution shutting down was a crime

Terry_B216d ago (Edited 216d ago )

Spec-Ops: The Line - A 'Typical' Shooter With Horrifying Hidden Depths

It's really a shame that the Spec Ops reboot didn't continue into a series. Obviously the story in The Line is over. But each game could have delved into the different psychological effects of war as well as exploring different takes on Heart of Darkness. In a sea of mindless military shooters it was nice to finally play a shooter that actually had something to say.

EazyC236d ago

This game was the last of a dying breed, a signifier of where shooter games (and videogames more broadly) COULD have gone if developers didn't pivot so hard into the online services, micro transaction, season pass, yada yada.

New narrative territory exploring the actual art form of gaming and storytelling within it.

Yui_Suzumiya236d ago

A brilliant depiction into what war can really do to a person and doesn't glorify it in any way.

Psychonaut85236d ago

I heard this game might be getting delisted, which is a travesty, this is one that should be preserved forever

Puty235d ago

I think the title was unfortunate - it was when Moder Warfare got big so I assumed it was yet another clone. Fortunately, because ps plus I checked out this gem of a game.
