Blu-ray, HD DVD to hit critical mass in 2008

The battle between Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD formats should be decided in Britain next year after Christmas shoppers revealed their planned purchases for 2008.

54 per cent of shoppers said they'd definitely switch to one of the two formats in the next 12 months, with 39 per cent saying they'd make the change even sooner - within the next six. The shoppers were surveyed by the Digital Entertainment Group Europe (DEGE), which promotes standard and high definition movie formats in the UK.

why would u release something on a 30gig disc when you know that Transformer didnt have HD audio files due to lack of space??

Come on! Compare a movie on both formats and you will see they are equally amazing. I keep hearing about Transformers not having HD sound... boring. The sound on Transformers is better than any movie I've watched on either format.

Yesterday I bought Casino Royale on BR and it was stunning, picture, sound, everything.. just the same as Transformers was on HD-DVD.

Yes BluRay will win, but consumers are being shafted with high prices on the players, and even more shafted by having to pick a format based on what movies are released on which!

The consumers are the ones losing in this "war" and being a devoted fanboy of either is being a blind fool.

sorry but your wrong blu ray does not have better nor more content and it does not offer higher quality audio cuz hd dvd can also do 7.1 audio, dolby truehd and lossless sound but back to the content look at 300 and harry potter both have more extra content than the blu ray versions and it definitely does not offer better video when blu ray first came out the visuals were strait sh!t now that they use the same codec as hd dvd they look some what the same the only thing blu ray had was space and now that is not there being that a 51 gig hd dvd disc has been approved

ZOOOOMG, yea Bluray is the best, they are doing so awesome outselling HD DVD discs worldwide on an amazing average ratio of 4.86:1, wooooow, and let's see they have more than a 10 times larger install base/10:1 hardware advantage, full entry level 1080p support, massive advertisement, several other hardware manufacturer's support, twice/thrice space on store shelves, more BOGO sales and free disc giveaways every week or two, higher disc storage capacity, uncompressed audio that only dogs can discern and a stronger industry backing with better exclusive movies Pirates Trilogy, Spidey Trilogy, Disney Movies, Sony Pictures, Fox and poor dead hd dvd has only bourne,shrek 0.5 and transfomers this holidays, don't worry it will only be a matter of time before we take over that 10% of marketshare that DVD has left us over with, our ps3 nuclear bomb was successful, muhahahaha!!

The only chance either format has is to go back to the negotiating table and work something out. All this format war has done is give internet providers more time to get faster download speeds and more time for terabyte drives to get cheaper and cheaper. Mark Cuban said that in five years everybody would have 5TB drives and download EVERYTHING-- HD movies, games, music, TV. Now that's looking more like just two or three years away. I'm willing to bet you that more people are excited about watching FREE network HD or satellite/cable HD movies than Blu-ray/HD DVD COMBINED. Most Blu-ray/HD DVD owners-- like ME-- probably spend much more time renting HD movies than bothering to buy them at over $30 a pop. Think about it... Warner switching to either Blu-ray or HD DVD won't necessarily end the war, at least not right away, giving downloads/whatever else is out there more time to wipe both Blu-ray & HD DVD off the map. I'm telling you... Sony Blu + Toshiba Red had better = PURPLE, and soon....

That's why I said what I said. Fast Downloads + usenet + HTCP + 60+ inches of HDTV = PURE HD BLISS. Those who say it's against the law... well I got news for you people. The technology is new and yet has any laws against having re-modified or re-encoded copies of hd material, it is very subjective and blurred, also with all these hd tivos and stuff being completely hundred percent legal to record hd movies from channels, it becomes very questionable where the legal line is drawn, i know for one that it will always be illegal to 100% duplicate the disc or material no matter how new the technology is or sell the material for personal gain, but anything else is debatable,
i mean u cud have recorded those movies from an hd channel and re-encoded it for ur personal keeping, or whoever ripped those bluray, hd dvd movies into x264 rips didn't sell them to u so being legal is questionable as specific laws concerning hd modification are yet to be implemented, heck, there is no fool proof method of duplicating an hd disc yet so why should they even bother about bootlegging? Enjoy ur hd content while it's still legal and buy it if u can afford it and it deserves the money

Seriously though, HD DVD will be dead by then, no need to even consider it. It seems that the more they help blu-ray, it grows, and the more they try hurting it, it grows even more; K-mart, Paramount, $99 HD-DVD, Xbox 360 HD-DVD, Universal, PiP, WB, Microsoft, Intel... you name it, they just can't battle against Blu-ray's success. I'll be glad if Microsh1t is forced to support Blu-ray eventually.

DL or TL discs are going to be expensive for a couple more years, but Single layer discs are going to be the mainstream....

come on, who on earth would think movie is the only place that someone uses a disc burner?

I bought my first DVD writer at the price point of around 200usd
i will do it again when the br burner get to 200usd =)

A 500Gb back-up drive can be bought for under $100 >today<. By the time Blu-ray or HD DVD burners are sub $200, you'll probably be able to buy a couple of Terabytes of back-up storage for the same price and back-up drives can move data many times faster than the data can be burned and those $40 BD-R blanks can only be written to once vs virtually unlimited read/writes on a drive.

For perspective, all my music/data/pictures etc on my PC comes to a little over 400Gb. To back it up, I simply drag and drop it onto my back-up drive and come back in about 4 hours and it is finished. BD-R blanks cost $40 each, can only be written to once, would take 17 discs to do the same job and take 45 minutes per burn. Do the math.

Optical disc back-ups are loooooooong dead.

Just a question. If blu-ray can hold all this information why does my Pirates 3 movie have one disk for actual play back and another for the special features. Couldn't they have put it all on one disk?

i read some article that said that blu ray code isnt as efficient at taking up space as hd dvd is that is why the disc have 50 gigs im not trying to start a flamewar i honestly read that i just cant remember where
