The Many Temptations Of The Xbox 360 – A PlayStation Owner’s Lament

"In the 360/PS3 debate, I tend to lean more towards the PS3 because of a number of reasons. Of course as a hardcore gamer, I own a 360 as well. However you’d most likely see me playing on my PS3 more often than the 360. Every so often though, I crave that 360 pie, what with the awesome games and the sense of community (or competition) the other camp has." - JTMGames Author

I own both systems as well and lean towards my PS3 as a matter of preference. The PS3 simply has better 1st part support.

Not being one who enjoys or even cares for online gaming, it doesn't make sense for me to play most games on the 360. I don't generally notice graphical glitches or less clarity (760, 1080, 30/60 FPS are all irrelevant to me).

But the 360 does have a few games that the PS3 doesn't have and I'll play them on the 360. I have to admit though that in the future I'll buy the Bethesda games on the 360 (if I even support them after the Skyrim fiasco)

Good opinion article.

darthv722459d ago

i tend to game more on the 360. I really like the controller more for the games I play. Not to mention that we have 2 360's and 1 ps3. The good part is there is one 360 for the kids and one for me but the ps3 is all mine.

The games are great on both and it can be tough to balance my time between them. just depends on my mood.

outsiders_belt2459d ago

I play both system about the same amount of time each. I buy mostly exclusive games on the PS3 and third-party games on my 360. After that debacle with Skyrim, Orange Box, and other broken PS3 ports, I feel much better with my purchases by sticking with 360 for the multiplatform games.

@ReservoirDog316 - Why would you sell your 360? you're missing out on a lot of good games and apps!

ReservoirDog3162459d ago

Extremely well said. I always had PS3/360/Wii but I just sold my 360 on eBay. I had a good run with it (had one since launch) but I just had to sell it. They all have great games though and of course a single console owner would want to play any of the exclusives.

kma2k2459d ago

ive got both systems & i get asked all the time which is better & my answer is always the same. They each do certain things better, simpleist answer

PS3 has no restrictions on what you can put on your hdd, so i put all kinds of music, pictures, videos, tv shows, movies and watch them on there whenever i want. Simple enogh the ps3 is better at media

Xbox 360 does not allow you to store stuff on the hdd unless you rip cds which dosent fly in todays standards, but 360 does everything else better, live, games, friends, all of that.

So ps3 does all the media better & 360 does the gaming aspect better, truth be told thats how my set up goes, if i want to game i grab my 360 controller & if i want to watch a movie or some tv shows or show off some pictures & what not i grab my ps3 controller.

TUGA2459d ago

"360 does the gaming aspect better" What does that even mean? You prefer 360 controlller or exclusives? Dont quite understand what you're trying to say.

Darrius Cole2459d ago

I disagree with your framing.

The PS3 is better at media. You can put whatever you want on you hdd, and watch you blu-rays.

I disagree with the notion that the 360 is better at games, live, friends etc. It is better at some multi-plat games because some devs still have problems with the PS3.

However, variety in the library matters. The 360 only gets 1 or 2 AAA exclusives per year and the PS3 gets 7 or 8 every year. Lots of those exclusives fill in gaps that don't get filled in by multi-plats. So the 360 gets left with gaps in the library.

The likelihood that a console actually has the games that you like to play is a factor in whether that console is better or worse at gaming.

jtmgames2459d ago

Id have to say that the 360 does media apps better. Have you ever tried watching youtube/hulu/crackle on the ps3? They're horrible.

I appreciate that Microsoft has been putting a lot of effort into really integrating the 360 into the entertainment center. Though I don't appreciate that I have to have a XBL Gold account to enjoy those media apps. Catch 22.

achmetha2459d ago

YouTube is horrible on ps3, but I actually prefer hulu on it vs my xbox.

ZippyZapper2459d ago

kma2k wanna know how I know you don't have a 360?

"Xbox 360 does not allow you to store stuff on the hdd unless you rip cds which dosent fly in todays standards,"

^^^ you can plug in any HDD or flash drive and watch video, listen to music, or pics, and the 360 was the first to do this. It was also the first to allow the streaming of music, pics and video from any device.

Baka-akaB2458d ago (Edited 2458d ago )

and you dont even read the posts . He's talking about storage on the console . Both can easily read from usb drive or media servers but only one can do that and store them on the console's hdd too .

The 360 is even less friendly to some of the video formats , unless you again use a media server (wich is the easier solution anyway , format compatibility wise for both consoles) .

And technically other consoles could stream data before , just not in an official capacity and as a default feature like the 360

kma2k2458d ago

zippyzapper feel free to look it up my gamertag is kma1183 & my psn name is anythingthatwill i got no reason to lie!

While true you can plug in a flash drive or an external which i do but its just a pain in the ass to do. Its much easier to just store the stuff on the ps3 hdd & watch later. I have over 250gb of media stored on my ps3 & the 360 will only let me plug in an external up to 32gb hench the fat32.

Im not putting down either system, last night my son & i watched a movie then i put him to bed, then once he was asleep i grabbed my 360 controller & played till midnight.

I personally feel PS3 owners aren't envious of 360 at all!
The only game I ever truely seen that 360 had that PS3 owners truely wanted was Mass Effect and PS3 owners got what they wanted!

I haven't seen a PS3 gamer cry for a single 360 game since then! and that's the truth!

Dakidog2459d ago

I would disagree and name a few more...but even over Halo I'd say Fable has to be #1

Ryo-Hazuki2459d ago

I have both systems but I'm not into Gears or Halo so I barely turn on my Xbox. The only game that interest me for this year on xbox is Alan Wake because I beat the first one

kma2k2459d ago

Mass Effect, Gears, Halo, & Fable were the 4 series that made me buy my 360 after having a ps3 since pretty much launch. Actually the psn going down gave me the final push. I now have both & love them both!

kneon2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

Mass Effect I played on PC, I've tried to play Gears and Halo and didn't care for either for reasons I can't go into without losing bubbles. I've never played Fable but it doesn't look like enough for me to buy a 360.

The one game I thought was going to get me to buy a 360 was Alan Wake, but after watching the first 20 minutes and spending most of the times laughing at how cheesy it was put an end to that idea.

smashcrashbash2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

I agree. That is why I think no one is ever satisfied with anything these days. They are too busy looking over other people's shoulders to enjoy what they have. I personally never saw the reason to buy multiple systems. I have a PS3 and have all the exclusives and third party games I need to play. I am never envious of what other systems have. I don't cry for games like so many people seem to think fans do.I don't see why I HAVE to buy a Wii and a 360 and a 3DS and a VITA or else I am not a true gamer or don't truly experience gaming as some people have told me.

If you have a few games that I might have wanted to play, I just shrug my shoulders and concentrate on the games I do have. What is annoying is the people who think because you point out the flaws in something that you are secretly pining for it. News flash, I could just genuinely dislike it.I don't like Super Meat Boy at all for example and couldn't care less if it EVER comes to the PSN. But people seem to translate that to that I am just saying that because I am 'jealous' that it isn't on PSN.

JaredH2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

The problem I see is that most people on this site and the internet who think like you feel they HAVE to point out flaws and hate on the competition. This is in context to any one system owner too and not just ps3 owners.

This is primarily based on how every article related to one console has just as many comments from people who have never owned the system as people who do. They go in the article and talk about how great their system of preference is while downplaying the one related to the article just for the sake of argument. This also applies to articles on games as well.

I think people should just be okay with what they have, like you, but I don't see how they can be if they feel they need to do this.

MerkinMax2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

If it wasn't for Halo and Gears, I would not own an Xbox. Those games alone make it worth my time though for the sheer amount of time they consume. Everyone has that one game that makes a console worth it for them. Halo does that for me. PS3 wise, the Uncharted series has that covered.

QuodEratDemonstrandm2459d ago

Exactly. It's InFamous, LBP and Metal Gear Solid for me. I haven't gotten around to Uncharted YET.

As for the 360, I'm happy with what I have. It's not a fanboy thing, just not really interested in the games.

Krew_922459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

The only 360 game I really wanted back then was the Left 4 Dead series, and the Orange Box, since the PS3 port sucked (in my opinion).

However I now own a capable PC that can play those games without a hitch.

I really only see myself buying a 360 to just have around.

ImBatman2459d ago

I'd have to disagree there. Hundreds of thousands of the PS "hardcore" switched to the Xbox 360 because of games like HALO, Gears Of War, Forza because while the 360 did not have as many exclusives, they were top of the line quality.

Also I've seen and heard PS3 gamers cry (loud) because the 360 gets exclusive DLC months ahead of the competition. Oh and let's not forget that PS gamers switched to 360 because that's where their friends game. Just ask Michael Pachter, he'll back that up with facts.

xPhearR3dx2459d ago

I sold my PS3 for a few reasons. I don't like PSN besides the fact that it's free, and many features missing that is on XBL. I also hate the very lightweight cheap feel to the PS3 controller along with the triggers. I don't give a rats ass about Halo, Gears or Forza. I play on what I'm comfortable with as a whole, which would be the 360. I'd love to play a few Wii and PC exclusives, but I can't stand either one (controller or interface wise).

Exclusives mean very little to me when I purchase a system. Mostly because if the controller isn't comfortable, it's going to ruin the experience. I LOVE MGS3 on the PS2, when I played it on my PS3 I couldn't stand it. Got the HD Collection on 360 and I love it all over again.

Kthalas2458d ago

I never switched to the 360. The PS3 was my first purchase. My wife bought me the 360 so I could play the few exclusives that I was interested in.

I don't base my purchases off what others buy, I base them off what I want. I have 2 'friends' on my 360 friend list. I have more on my PSN. Of which I talk to maybe 3.

I'm also a patient person. I don't care if the 360's version of a game gets DLC 6 months before the PS3's version. I have seen 360 owners "whoop it up" because MS got something over the PS3, but when the shoe's on the other foot, the same ones get childish.

Kind of ironic.

thedude442459d ago

i agree, i bought a 360 for mass effect 1 and the witcher, (my pc sucks)

ImBatman2459d ago

@thedude44 - Oh man, I can't wait for Witcher 2 on the 360. Beat the hell out of Witcher Extended Edition on my old PC.

@xPheaR3dx - You do know that you can buy controllers like the Nyko Raven and Power A that look and feel like the 360 controller for the PS3 right? And guess what, they cost cheaper than the DualShock 3 and 360 controllers.

You sold your system way too early my friend.

xPhearR3dx2459d ago

I guess you missed the part about online interface an features as well. It's not just the controller. I can't stand the XMB, I don't like not having party chat or voice messages, and I don't like how basic tasks are done on PSN or with the XMB.

mechanicleman2459d ago

Just the truth no BS.

Who cares about third party games they perform fine when you have good developers, not all devs are lazy on multiplates and xbox holds PS3 back and the fact that you support that by playing the 360 version is horrible...

look at PS3 exclusives and that is what multiplates should be but can't because of Xbox....

The PS3 controller is more comfortable than the 360 controller everything about it including the push pad buttons they are seperate on PS3 on xbox its just one button so you press left on the directional pad and it goes up somtimes horrible for fighting games

your fingers fall right over the PS3 sticks and it feels weird to move your character around with xbox left stick, you flick your thumb up to go forward and your thumb rides the bottom of the joystiq can you say annoying! and going sideways is weird on xbox, PS3 is more natural and PS3 does have triggers you can buy them your not stuck with triggers..

"The network affect" PS3 is where the games are and little kids who dont know any better and don't have a gaming system fall in the trap of saying hey I want to play COD with my friends whom bought a cheap xbox so they by a cheap xbox "The Network Effect" just like an earlier article...

JaredH2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

At first I felt the same with the 360 controller and complained but after using it for a couple hours I didn't even notice any problems with it.

Also from personal experience the "network affect" works both ways.

Honestly I see no difference in quality from ps3 exclusives to multiplat games to 360 exclusives. A good game is a good game imo. Portal 2 was my personal goty for 2011 and I liked it more than any exclusive on any platform I played.

The fact that your opinion reads subjective and not based on any facts makes your first sentence a lie as it's the opposite of what you wrote.

And you or someone just copied and pasted this comment on both the source and here with pretty much proves my point above...

despair2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

I hate the x360 controller, guess its personal preference but to me its nowhere as comfortable as a PS3 one.

The good thing for me is that I buy a lot of PC games and quite a few X360 console exclusives come to PC as well (or vice versa). The only one that hurt me (and almost made me buy back a X360) was Gears 3.

The next one is getting narrower and narrower. More and more devs are getting better at making the games closer in quality. But X360 definitely gets the lion share of better looking 3rd party games, even if many are indistinguishable by most people.

Don't give a damn about cross game chat (why would I want to talk to someone from another game when I'm playing my game) and I could care less about the community or grouping for games as I play 99% Single player games.

indie games are good but most come to the pc and usually with large discounts so I get them there instead.

Fred-G-Sanford2459d ago

"I hate the x360 controller, guess its personal preference but to me its nowhere as comfortable as a PS3 one"

It's very hard for me to believe that anyone could honestly prefer the Dualshock over the 360 controller, unless they only used the D-pad to play games and/or had the hands of a 7 year old asian boy.

I suspect that 99.9% of the people that claim to prefer the PS3 controller have either never held a 360 controller, or simply refuse to admit that the 360 controller takes a massive dump all over the PS3 controller.

Sony worship makes people say funny things sometimes...

LMAO, you're really arguing that every person in the world should prefer an X360 controller lol..

MrBeatdown says it best...

Baka-akaB2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

Oh god , your argument is so ridiculous that the above facepalm sums it up , but fine whatever ...

I hate the 360 pad for very simple reasons . Whatever logic and pretense hard evidence some of you may present , i do not find ergonomic (AS in I , MYSELF , personally :p) the position of the left analogic nub on the 360 pad .

And as a minor issue i dont care much for the shape of the pad itself .

This is pretty much why i mostly used ps2 adapters with my 360 . And why my pc 360 shaped 3rd party pad , a saitek ... allows you to switch the dpad and left analog position as you wish .

And i dont have to care about the 360's analog being better . it's true but doesnt mean the ps3's analog even got issues , its just less good but works fine . While the 360's dpad isnt much good and problematic for a few games .

Who are you ? my frickin' hands to pretend you know better :p ?

Bathyj2459d ago

Dude, I'm 6"3' and can hold a basketball in one hand.
Dont give me that small hands crap.

Its called preference.

Saying you only like the DS3 over the XB controller because youve never tried one is like saying gay guys are only gay because they've never had a woman.

Total rubbish.

AgentWD402459d ago

prefer the 360 controller, dual shock is fine but its my personal opinion that the 360 pad is better. As for the consoles them selves, I wouldn't be without either.

bcmma2459d ago

"simply refuse to admit that the 360 controller takes a massive dump all over the PS3 controller."

Whoa there Fred, Xbox worship makes people say funny things themselves. Hypocrisy, thy name is Fred.

dalibor2459d ago

In my opinion it's just preference. Yes I have held the 360 controller before and it's a great controller but I myself feel like I am better at games using the DS3. I think that if the DS3 was a bit wider where the start and select buttons are located that would solve the thumb hitting my other thumb problem some seem to have when using both analogs at the same time. And extend the handles a little bit perhaps? That would be my experiment to make the DS3 even better.

mechanicleman2458d ago

I prefer the dualshock over the xbox controls, the truth is if you play with any controller long enough you can adapt but the sticks on the xbox are annoying and when walking forward with your character and moving left and right your thumb rides the bottom of the stick it is annoying.

Most people are willing to admit it, the rest post here on N4G. lol

Baka-akaB2459d ago

actually most people dont care , dont have a whole cult over a pad , and just use whatever their console got or are comfortable with

SuperK2459d ago

Haha gotta love that answer LOL

jtmgames2459d ago

@despair - It's true though that most single-player gamers tend to lean towards the PS3 because of it's relative lack of community (Outside of PlayStation Home).

I respect your opinion on the 360 controller, But I'd have to disagree with you there. The Dualshock 3 has a bit of a deadzone that makes it less precise than the 360's pad. Ever played BF3 on 360 then switch to PS3? Imprecise (though it's relatively unnoticable unless you've played it on the 360.)

ReflexGamer2458d ago

Opposite for me, the 360 has a deadzone in the middle of the joystick, the dualshock is perfect, several friends agree with me.... but, the 360 controller is better in every other way
