GameSpot's Hands-On AMD Phenom 9900 Processor

AMD has recently released the Spider platform, the first joint product launch resulting from the company's merger with graphics manufacturer ATI. The Spider platform consists of three new product lines: the ATI Radeon HD 3800-series GPU, the AMD Phenom CPU, and the AMD 7-series motherboard chipset. This is the first time AMD has been able to offer customers a complete processor, graphics, and motherboard system platform with AMD chips handling all three major functions. They also represent AMD's most advanced technology to date.

The ATI Radeon HD 3800 graphics chips offer more performance and more power efficiency than the Radeon HD 2900 series. The AMD 790 chipset line brings HyperTransport 3.0, PCI Express 2.0, and CrossFireX quad-GPU support to motherboard platforms. GPU updates and new chipsets are always welcome, but the AMD Phenom processor is the most anticipated part of the platform.

Wow, i heard this was under 350, if this is correct-this is an amazing deal. But the Intel Quad core chip outperformed in every single game... But i sill prefer AMD over Intel, cheaper and yet efficient processors.

So the Phenom isn't the Core 2 killer that we all hoped it would be. Bad thing is that Intel could very well stagnate on it's current plaform like they did with uhh...EVERY Pentium model.

In any case, isn't AMD working on a hybrid processor? It seems to me that the Phenom is something of a work in progress place holder sort of deal.

A low priced alternative that slightly underperforms is competition. Hopefully they increase clockspeed and keep the low price.

Until they bought ATI, since I really like nVidia. And since intel has become the new AMD in terms of performance, well... tough luck for AMD. At least they have the Wii and Xbox 360 chipsets to be proud of, right? Oh wait.
