Dear developers, don’t announce your game if you can’t release it in the next 2 years

Not everyone is allowed ValveTime.

Bundi4912d ago (Edited 4912d ago )

Good read. I felt the same way about Alan Wake. It is by no means a bad game, but after the lengthy dev time allocated to it, I was expecting to be blown away.
It isn't a very good idea to announce a game 5 years from release because it builds way too much hype which the final product rarely matches.

BlmThug4912d ago

I agree with the article. After 2 years the hype becomes too much and expectations are through the roof. It is very rare a game live up to that hype and expectation so then it fails.

kaveti66164911d ago

Alan Wake was in development hell, and Remedy was teasing the game mostly so that a publisher would become interested in it and pick it up. So it's an exception among other games like Gran Turismo, which have a guaranteed publisher.

SugarSoSweet4912d ago

BEST ARTICLE EVER!

No seriously its just nice to see some1 finally address this its annoying

TronEOL4912d ago

I fully agree with this. This is especially what I love about Naughty Dog. Every time they announce a game, you can pretty much guarantee release within a year. Not many developers that I can think of do this sort of thing.

Not to mention if announced far too soon, the final product can change a lot from concept to release.

Developers need to stop doing this.

badz1494912d ago

Activision is the only publisher at the moment where people knew when their next game will be released....which ultimately renders the actual announcement useless!

CoD 9 2012
CoD 10 2013
and the list goes on...

Optical_Matrix4912d ago

I definitely think it's a problem that needs to be addressed. Videogames are evolving at an alarming rate, and what would have been acceptable in say 2008, may not even be acceptable a year and a half later, standards wise. Duke Nukem is a perfect example of this. If you look at the time since Versus XIII was announced, and the sheer amount of quality and medium pushing games we've seen since then, who's to say Versus won't feel outdated when it releases?

Lucky for Square Enix they've published and developed their fair share of games for current generation consoles, so that shouldn't happen with Versus, but that doesn't change the fact that people start to get frustrated and tired out when it comes to waiting, myself included. Versus XIII shouldn't have been announced until that gameplay reveal last January. To think that that, after 5 years, was the first reveal of actual gameplay, is quite insulting as a fan.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi4912d ago

FFv13's case is a bit different. I'm sure Nomura knew the game would take a while but because it was part of a three game project all of them had to be announced at the same time. Nomura's a busy man. He's been working on Kingdom hearts games and other titles ever since the announcement of the FNC project. Production just recently went to 100 percent on it in fact. But i guess that still doesn't negate the fact that this game is taking a long time to finish.

Pozzle4912d ago (Edited 4912d ago )

I don't think there's anything wrong with the game taking so long to produce. Many developers work on games for 4-5 years, but only officially "announce" the game during the final year.

But announcing Versus XIII five years ago was pretty silly, especially since production wasn't even at 100% when it was first announced. Did Square really think it was going to be released in 2006 or 2007? Or did they know that it would take so long?

Sharingan_no_Kakashi4912d ago

But that's the thing. They didn't just announce versus 13, they announced the Fabula Nova Crystalis project which versus13 was a part of, along with ff13 and what used to be agito. If it were up to Nomura or if versus was a stand alone project he probably would've waited.

And yea they probably had some unexpected hick ups during development as well. And there's always that possibility that the rumored 360 version is also holding back production. Who's to say? Even still it is taking an awful long time to finish even accounting for all that stuff.

Six Times When Games Turned Into A Horror Game

Ever play a game a game only to discover at some point it transforms into a horror game? No? Well Netto's Game Room shares six games that do just that!

Immediately thought of the El Dorado zombie dudes in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

raWfodog37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Not necessarily a ‘horror’ moment, but I remember feeling really tense and anxious when the Flood were first introduced in the original Halo. I never felt more on edge or nervous in that whole game as that moment. I think it was the whole buildup that something terrible was coming but you didn’t know exactly what.

Another non-horror game that had me feeling it was Subnautica. The deep dark depths, and knowing that sea monsters were lurking nearby, had me jumping at every sound.

NettosGameRoom37d ago

That scene where you first see them attack is pretty crazy!

I remember being scared of the Asylum level in the most recent Thief game from 2014.

always liked 15, but the development was shch a shitshow. it could have been so much more.

but Tabata did a good job with what he had regardless

Ff15 was a missed opportunity from square as they transitioned from turn based to real time.

One of the issues is that it was 30 fps. The combat mechanics required precision dodges to activate Noctis teleport ability and it was difficult to do at 30 fps. I am glad they rectified that in FF16. The story and flow also felt like it went through a chopshop similar to how some live service games end up when they are trying to meet a deadline. Those extra episodes they sold as dlc should have been in the maingame.

FF15 is one of the weaker entries in the series.

Z501171d ago

Dodges don't activate the teleport ability. Teleport was R1 + O. Dodge was just the O button. Explain the Black Hood (the item that automatically Dodges for you)

TheNamelessOne171d ago

Ah yes; FF XV.
The beginning of me coming to the realization the series was no longer for me.

Michiel1989171d ago

16 was a lot better, I think 15 was just a big mess with how development went and all. The music though, one of the best in the series, probably the only reason I finished the game.

Cacabunga171d ago

At least FF15 had RPG elements . 16 was just an action game from beginning to end.

Michiel1989171d ago

I rather have a good action game than a bad rpg with 2 button combat

Cacabunga170d ago (Edited 170d ago )

Then call it something else then FF. I got scammed with FF16. Nothing of what i expected it to be.
Even the action is bad in it, especially after the demo section where absolutely nothing happens until the very end.

FF15 isnt a great game but it has some variety at least.

CrimsonWing69171d ago

That initial trailer with the Leviathan fight was the game I wish we got. The actual retail release was watchdogged to all Hell and while there’s enjoyment to be had in the game, it’s such an incomplete product and so many elements feel so slapped together without any cohesion.

Like, don’t get me wrong, I loved fishing, cooking, and the first third of the game, but I much rather they made a story that didn’t feel barely there and the the last third of the game didn’t feel so rushed and unfinished.

Becuzisaid170d ago

Every time a party member left for a period of time screamed future paid dlc. It was horrible.

Imagine Dagger and Steiner making the party go to sleep in Lindblum in FF9 disc 1 and then taking off to Alexandria by foot themselves, but then never playing their side of the adventure in disc 2 when they smuggle her through the South Gate in pickles, take the cable car and fight the Waltz, head to Treno and start the quest to find Supersoft. They just eventually reunite with the main party in the future without explanation of what went on in their adventure.

Or Sephiroth's backstory in the famous Kalm flashback being added as a dlc pack. Same goes for Vincent, Cid, or Yuffie for that matter.

Oh and anything to do with Jenova, the Ancients, Aerith, her mom and Gast, shoved into a 2 hour CG movie or 5 hour anime ministries that's considered required viewing for anything in the main game to make sense or have characters actually be interesting.

I enjoyed FF15 at the time, and finished it, but it's bright spots are marred by a bad development cycle and a worse marketing scheme.

CrimsonWing69170d ago

What’s sad is when I watched a vid on the entire story (that wasn’t properly told in the actual game)!it was really solid and could’ve been one of the most epic stories in any FF. I think a lot of the compilation and cross-media stuff really f*cked it all up.

gurp171d ago

FFXV was underrated in my opinion
I have played all of the final fantasy games, and I loved this game
turn based to me takes too long, I like active battle
the extra dlc and chapters should have been included in the original release, but it is nice that they fixed the game later

Glad that I absolutely can't stand subscription services.

Petebloodyonion423d ago (Edited 423d ago )

I don't recall Sony forcing you to subscribe like nobody forced you to go to Blockbuster to rent games instead of buying them.

SonyStyled423d ago

Pay-per-view was almost cheaper than the cost of gas and rental fee from Blockbuster. Blockbuster doesn’t exist today. Are you being sarcastic?
