Why Scrapping The Final Fantasy Versus XIII Name Would Be Square-Enix's Best Marketing Decision Yet

GP: "In the time since Final Fantasy Versus 13 was announced, Square-Enix has released Final Fantasy 13, Final Fantasy 13-2, Final Fantasy 14, and Final Fantasy Type-0. Lets just say things haven't gone exactly as planned for Square-Enix. Final Fantasy 13 sold like hotcakes, but fan reception was mixed at best. On top of that, Square-Enix claimed the only reason western audiences didn't like it was because they didn't understand the type of game it was.

Remember that this was the thirteenth title in an award winning, beloved series. Then Final Fantasy 14 had so many problems that the planned PS3 version still hasn't seen the light of day almost a year since the PC version's release. And now with Final Fantasy 13-2, Square-Enix is running into a new bit to trouble. Consumer backlash."

Call it Final Fantasy Versus or Final Fantasy 15

This game shouldn't be a spin off to a crap FF game, if anything FF13 should of been the spin off

"Could they call it Final Fantasy 15? There's some trouble in that too. According to what little information there is on the internet, the game plays more like a Kingdom Hearts game than it does a Final Fantasy game"

So....I mean the crap battle system FF13 had was a drastic change from turn based yet it was still a main title FF game, I would take KH style gameplay over the one used in FF13

Kurisu4924d ago

Final Fantasy Versus, yes. Final Fantasy XV, no. If they called it XV it would be a bit odd, as it would have elements of the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology. I know that the FNC no longer has the "XIII" tagline like it did before, but still. Wouldn't make sense for a main numbered title to have ties to a previous main numbered title.

Outside_ofthe_Box4924d ago (Edited 4924d ago )

Doesn't matter. I don't care what they call it. As long as that cursed '13' is not in the title it's all good.

I prefer calling it 15 as it would give it the attention it deserves. Like blackmask said Versus should NOT be a spinoff. It is more worthy of a main FF title than FF13 ever was.

Pozzle4924d ago

"as it would have elements of the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology."

I might be wrong about this, but I could have sworn Square had dropped the connections between XII and Versus?

Nate-Dog4924d ago

@Pozzle: Well there are still features of the Versus's story which have ties to the FNC mythology, such as the fal'Cie (and perhaps sprung from that other things which we still don't know for sure, such as why your party will only be able to use magic if Noctis is in the party, or perhaps more l'Cie).

MrWiggle4923d ago

"Wouldn't make sense for a main numbered title to have ties to a previous main numbered title."

May I just point out something Kurisu, we don't actually know where FF13 Versus is now since it's been in development so long. They might of made it so it hardly has any connection to FF13. Hell look at what we've seen for Versus, they look totaly differen't like they come from two differen't universes, I can't believe for a second that FF13 Versus world is the same as FF13s. Versus is more dark and gritty while FF13 was bright and colourful.

Type-0 dropped connections to the fabula nova crystallis series and I personaly believe FF13 Versus will do the same, instead FF13-2 will take it's place and if they want to milk more money out of people then FF13-3 will take Type-0s place

Its hard to Call this game Final Fantasy 15 considering its heavily related to Fabula Nova Crystallis with Goddess Etro being one of the central themes to the game. Also, it's Kingdom Hearts inspired battle system also is also far from ATB or turn based.

On the other side, calling the game "Final Fantasy Versus" seems like an incomplete title.

All in all, Final Fantasy XV would be a satisfying name, a great business decision as well. Although "Final Fantasy Versus XIII" has a good ring to it.

Whitefox7894924d ago

Everyone seems to be forgetting FF Type-Zero was originally named FF 13 Agito so I can't really see why it would be an issue to the change the name.

Actually I do remember a rumor saying that Maqui and Cid from FF 13 is in Versus though I believe its more or less cameo's. The information came from IMDb so I can only take it with a very little grain of salt however we must look at all possibilities.

iamtehpwn4924d ago

Yes, it went from Final Fantasy Agito XIII to Final Fantasy Type-0. It didn't go from Agito XIII to XV. That's a much bigger step.

Eamon4923d ago

Type-0 is still part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology anyway.

They scrapped the "13" because S-E wanted to turn Agito into it's own series. Basically, Agito is no longer a single stand-alone title.

silkrevolver4924d ago

Hate FF XIII all you want, but its battle system was its greatest strength.

BDSE4924d ago

No, it's battle system was tedious and boring and represented an insult to western gamers. They implemented this system to cater for western tastes- in other words they thought that we couldn't handle a proper turn based system.

MrWiggle4923d ago

I have to disagree the battle system was the worst thing about FF13, at ArronC07 has pointed out it was boring and all you did was button mash 95% of the time.

Darkfocus4923d ago

I beat the game without ever changing the original 3 paradigms I had picked out(except when available party members didn't allow for it)...it was ludicrously easy.

Eamon4923d ago

I think a lot of people these days are more into flashy action and colours rather than the old strategic style.

I mean, I can still bring out FF6 on SNES and play it and enjoy it. It's made of little sprites with animations that last only a couple of frames.

And I found that much more fun than the borefest of FF13.

MRMagoo1234923d ago

IMO the battle system was crap at best but then again that may of still been its greatest strength because overall the game was terrible, i managed to finish it without anti-coma meds but it was hard.
I would prefer FF13 be kept as a reminder as to what direction NOT to go for any future FF title.
IMO i would like the game to go back to turn based like previous titles such as FF7 so strategy plays a part in the game again rather than tapping one button over and over till you win.

Ryo-Hazuki4923d ago (Edited 4923d ago )

you guys are delusional. I guess it's cool to hate on everything related to FF13 but truth of the matter is the battle system was the best battle system of all final fantasy's. You mean to tell me a straight basic turn base was than 13's battle system? Please

PshycoNinja4923d ago (Edited 4923d ago )

@Ryo-Hazuki

I'll let my roommate type what he thinks about what you just said: "dude, you must be on acid. That system is not even close to the best battle system. Considering that turn based battle is signature to the final fantasy series, yes, I do think turn based is better. In my opinion, FFX, hands down best battle system. It kept true to the roots of final fantasy while trying something new that worked!!

I have been a die hard final fantasy fan and I can say with all certainty, the series has lost its luster after X. X-2, garbage, XII, garbage, XIII, I couldn't keep my attention on it long enough to get to the "good part". not a good sign. I also feel that square is making a huge mistake by associating their newest title with the sham that is XIII. call it XV. looks cooler and doesn't make me think about slitting my wrists while in the tub with a toaster.

I honestly don't understand what all you people are playing. Maybe I got crap version. I should have asked the sales associate. This is all my opinion and if you don't like it, I'm sure you'll whine and make up a lame response. Respect if you can come up with something good, but what do I know? I'm just the roommate."

Blacksand14924d ago

You won.t see this game until PS4

Blacksand14923d ago (Edited 4923d ago )

It's ready 2012 it haven't been a date for it to come out, PS4 coming 2013 and FFv13 will come then.

PshycoNinja4923d ago

But you guys have to think about the gamers out there who don't follow everything game news or final fantasy related. Which is the great majority of gamers. We are the minority, the hardest of hardcore. Joe shmo is going to look at Final Fantasy Versus XIII and remember that he didnt like FFXIII and ignore this game cause it has XIII in the title.

Honestly renaming the game to Final Fantasy XV would be a smart business move because it would generate more excitement for the game and it WILL garner more sales because its a "Main title Final Fantasy". Honestly take a step back for a moment and ponder for a second, what would the normal consumer rather buy: Final Fantasy Versus XIII or Final Fantasy XV. The obvious answer would be Final Fantasy XV. Food for thought...

Blacksand14922d ago (Edited 4922d ago )

That's why i said it's not coming out that's year Xbox coming out next year, Sony not going to let them get a head start again and they need some good title to push PS4. Because I'm not going to jump on PS4 like i did PS3 if no good titles come out.

Just like "The Final Destination" (4th film). And now, oh look, theres a 5 xD The Final Fantasy would actually be a pretty good marketing idea, people would be riding the buzz this this could potentially be the last game, when of course really there will be more later down the line :P

Panthers4923d ago

The original FF was named that because it was going to be Squares last game. They were in a lot of financial trouble and it was their last hope. Luckily it was a hit and Square went on to make some amazing games.

jc485734924d ago

this should go all the way back with FFXI. I still want my FFXI rpg. Squareenix totally destroyed the number system.

Optical_Matrix4924d ago

The Final Fantasy XIII franchise has tarnished the name of the overall franchise far too much for Square Enix to keep this. And its evident that, as with Type-0, the link to FFXIII is so minimal that it's almost pointless calling it Versus XIII anymore.

Silly gameAr4924d ago (Edited 4924d ago )

There's nothing SE can do to save face in my opinion. The name means jack to me now in days, but that's just me. Could be a different story for others.

Not sure how a name change would be the best, when so many are anticipating VSXIII by the way. Wouldn't the change throw people off that are anticipating it, when it drops in 2020, if at all?

DigitalRaptor4924d ago

Totally agree.

It's an experimental FF game by nature, so it couldn't do with the main series title "XV".

"Final Fantasy Versus" sounds weird. I think Versus XIII is how people have come to know it, and for marketing purposes the "XIII" tag would probably help it more than hinder it, no matter what peoples' opinion of the previous entries are.

All I care about right now is them bringing the darn game out!

Six Times When Games Turned Into A Horror Game

Immediately thought of the El Dorado zombie dudes in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

raWfodog48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

Not necessarily a ‘horror’ moment, but I remember feeling really tense and anxious when the Flood were first introduced in the original Halo. I never felt more on edge or nervous in that whole game as that moment. I think it was the whole buildup that something terrible was coming but you didn’t know exactly what.

Another non-horror game that had me feeling it was Subnautica. The deep dark depths, and knowing that sea monsters were lurking nearby, had me jumping at every sound.

NettosGameRoom47d ago

That scene where you first see them attack is pretty crazy!

I remember being scared of the Asylum level in the most recent Thief game from 2014.

always liked 15, but the development was shch a shitshow. it could have been so much more.

but Tabata did a good job with what he had regardless

DivineHand125182d ago

Ff15 was a missed opportunity from square as they transitioned from turn based to real time.

One of the issues is that it was 30 fps. The combat mechanics required precision dodges to activate Noctis teleport ability and it was difficult to do at 30 fps. I am glad they rectified that in FF16. The story and flow also felt like it went through a chopshop similar to how some live service games end up when they are trying to meet a deadline. Those extra episodes they sold as dlc should have been in the maingame.

FF15 is one of the weaker entries in the series.

Z501181d ago

Dodges don't activate the teleport ability. Teleport was R1 + O. Dodge was just the O button. Explain the Black Hood (the item that automatically Dodges for you)

TheNamelessOne182d ago

Ah yes; FF XV.
The beginning of me coming to the realization the series was no longer for me.

Michiel1989181d ago

16 was a lot better, I think 15 was just a big mess with how development went and all. The music though, one of the best in the series, probably the only reason I finished the game.

Cacabunga181d ago

At least FF15 had RPG elements . 16 was just an action game from beginning to end.

Michiel1989181d ago

I rather have a good action game than a bad rpg with 2 button combat

Cacabunga181d ago (Edited 181d ago )

Then call it something else then FF. I got scammed with FF16. Nothing of what i expected it to be.
Even the action is bad in it, especially after the demo section where absolutely nothing happens until the very end.

FF15 isnt a great game but it has some variety at least.

CrimsonWing69182d ago

That initial trailer with the Leviathan fight was the game I wish we got. The actual retail release was watchdogged to all Hell and while there’s enjoyment to be had in the game, it’s such an incomplete product and so many elements feel so slapped together without any cohesion.

Like, don’t get me wrong, I loved fishing, cooking, and the first third of the game, but I much rather they made a story that didn’t feel barely there and the the last third of the game didn’t feel so rushed and unfinished.

Becuzisaid181d ago

Every time a party member left for a period of time screamed future paid dlc. It was horrible.

Imagine Dagger and Steiner making the party go to sleep in Lindblum in FF9 disc 1 and then taking off to Alexandria by foot themselves, but then never playing their side of the adventure in disc 2 when they smuggle her through the South Gate in pickles, take the cable car and fight the Waltz, head to Treno and start the quest to find Supersoft. They just eventually reunite with the main party in the future without explanation of what went on in their adventure.

Or Sephiroth's backstory in the famous Kalm flashback being added as a dlc pack. Same goes for Vincent, Cid, or Yuffie for that matter.

Oh and anything to do with Jenova, the Ancients, Aerith, her mom and Gast, shoved into a 2 hour CG movie or 5 hour anime ministries that's considered required viewing for anything in the main game to make sense or have characters actually be interesting.

I enjoyed FF15 at the time, and finished it, but it's bright spots are marred by a bad development cycle and a worse marketing scheme.

CrimsonWing69181d ago

What’s sad is when I watched a vid on the entire story (that wasn’t properly told in the actual game)!it was really solid and could’ve been one of the most epic stories in any FF. I think a lot of the compilation and cross-media stuff really f*cked it all up.

gurp182d ago

FFXV was underrated in my opinion
I have played all of the final fantasy games, and I loved this game
turn based to me takes too long, I like active battle
the extra dlc and chapters should have been included in the original release, but it is nice that they fixed the game later
