Why Nathan Drake would make a fantastic homosexual

I was reading this very nice article on Gamasutra about the dearth of legitimate homosexual characters in videogames, and was particularly struck by writer Andrew Meade's suggestion at the end -- make Nathan Drake gay. Now, before you laugh that suggestion off as little more than a silly bit of joking, I would like to state that I agree with Meade -- and I am deathly serious about it.

If they were engaged then Drake would not have a ring. There may be some unconventional men who like a ring during engagement in this day and age but I doubt ND would give him an engagement ring.

Plus it clearly isn't an engagement ring that Elena has on.

I agree. I don't understand how it would make perfect sense in the story. There's plenty of men, who do not have lasting relationships. It's a commitment issue, not a gay issue.

Well, just because you don't want a character you might like and respect to turn gay, it doesn't mean you are intolerant or a homophobe, which seems to be the vibe floating around here.

Some people just don't want their favored characters to be homosexual. There's nothing wrong with that. I would be pissed if my favorite characters were suddenly rewritten as something else whether it be gay or green.

Edit: -shrug- what about that guy? I wasn't referencing what he said, just looking at the disagrees for people who just say no without really making asses of themselves.

I guess it could have just been a general statement, not aimed at anybody or I'm confused by your statement because I didn't read it as sarcasm related to the guy. It seemed like you were just saying there's a nice community here because a bunch of ppl are disagreeing with those who disagree with the idea of Nathan Drake being gay, which completely warrants my post.

Gamers have already associated Drake with being a heterosexual and one that is linked with ELena and Chloe. The thing is by making him homosexual now will only feel cheap to the character something added just to sa hey we added it and it'll bring new prospects for the characters development, but it won't. If the relationship development that Drake and Elena have shown in the series are just thrown out simply because out of random change than it ruins those moments where you know they felt connected.

The same goes for turning Drake Bisexual, it'll feel forced considering we've all been accustomed to seeing Drake completely as a hetero male. To suddenly have him also attracted to males despite showing minimum at best hints at attraction to other guys.

Now am I saying there shouldn't be a homosexual character? Not at all, if people want Naughty Dog to tackle a character and homosexuality then I'm all in but don't do it to a person who's already three big games deep.

I have no problem with homosexual characters (actually, I have no problem with any kind of character) because what I like is good characters (or a character you create yourself RPG-style if the game is able to react properly to your decisions)

I can understand that some people would not like to play a gay protagonist if the story emphasizes this side of the character (at the same time, I do wonder if some homosexual gamers have a problem playing an heterosexual character). But arguments like "he's too badass to be gay" are just silly... 100% facepalm material.

I must say that in the case of Uncharted, I'd miss the relationship between Nathan and Helena though... It'd be better to have Marcus Fenix discovering his homosexuality ! Or maybe just two of his buddies. Epic should consider the idea

And this my friends, is the pure genius of Naughty Dog and Amy Hennig's writing. To have a character as deep as Drake, and yet allow each individual player to project himself onto the character, as Jim Sterling has done here, is nothing short of sheer brilliance!
