First Person Shooters of 2012

It's safe to say 2011 was a decent year for gamers. Especially these last few months with the release of Gears of War 3, Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, and Skyrim to name a few. So, now that Christmas has come and gone, and the new year is right around the corner, what do we have to look forward to for 2012?

"XCOM is basically just a reboot of the game X-COM, it’s a strategic first person shooter. It will have an all new setting, but most of the concepts are the same as the original."

Kittens die in pain when people write such jibberish.

Felinox4503d ago

Exactly why I went to the comments. Well said. Xcom the original was an excellent strategy game. The "reboot" looks terrible and is not alluring to fans of the original. Infact it doesn't even seem to stand out among the shooters.

NukaCola4503d ago

Prey 2 look incredible. It's an open world free running FPS bounty hunting game. It's like Blade Runner and Mirror's Edge all rolled up in one with some Mass Effect in there too. I think it's crazy how it went to such an awesome change since the first one.

specialguest4503d ago

They stripped away everything that made the original Shadowrun fun and turned it into a generic FPS. No RPG elements, Cyberpunk theme, or hacking.

brodychet4503d ago

I know this is really random, but is anyone else having problems with the N4G site today? Like no pictures coming up and stuff. Sorry about this.

life doomer4503d ago

i'm also having the same problem, wierd.

Cosmit4503d ago

Yeah same here. I though maybe because I was using it from the iPhone.

_Aarix_4499d ago

Probably servers having catche problems.

ATi_Elite4503d ago

Firefall
Planetside 2
Arma III
Hawken
Stalker 2
Metro Last Light
Tribes: Ascend
BF2143
Natural Selection 2

Hufandpuf4503d ago

How do you know BF2143 will be out next year? If anything DICE will release Mirror's Edge 2 before anything else.

JsonHenry4503d ago

I love the last line of this article - "While most people have been saying 2012 will be a bad year for gamers, I think we’ll be just fine with the options listed above."

The only people saying that are people that only game on consoles. If you are PC gamer there is a LOT to be excited about next year!! Diablo 3 is just a start.

ShoryukenII4503d ago (Edited 4503d ago )

Even on consoles 2012 isn't bad.

The Last Guardian (I hope)
Max Payne 3
Grand Theft Auto V
Starhawk
BioShock Infinite
Playstation Vita (and all of its games)
Metal Gear Rising
Anarchy Reigns
Prey 2
Guild Wars 2 (I know it is PC but it is free!)
Dust 514
The Last of Us (maybe)
...That's all I can think of. The list isn't as long as 2011 but games like GTA V, BioShock Infinite and Metal Gear Rising don't come out often. There is also a large backlog of games from 2011 and before (for me). I haven't even climbed the Throat of the World in Skyrim. :)

Edit: I can't believe that I forgot Assassin's Creed III.
Dishonoured too.

oh yay more and more sequels while gaming gets more mainstream, political, and controlled by money loving corporations

I_am_Batman4503d ago

That's why I'm looking foreward to Bioshock: Infinite. Sure it is a sequel but it'll be a very original one. At some points it even seems like the opposite of it's predecessors. While the first and second Bioshock was all about dark, oppressive and linear levels, Bioshock: Infinite will be way more open.

This platform generation is now 6 years old. It seems like most studios are going to play it save without the risks of a new IP. On the other hand we're probably still getting Last of Us and Last Guardian in 2012 with the possibility of some studios working on unannounced "new IP's".

DigitalRaptor4503d ago (Edited 4503d ago )

You're right there, but the thing is, BioShock Infinite isn't really a sequel. Just tied to the 'BioShock' name because of the familiarity of the franchise and marketing reasons I think. It's a spiritual successor in the same way as BioShock was to System Shock 2. If anything, it's a prequel, but unrelated to the first one as far as I know.

It's completely fresh besides the core mechanics of the game and even that has changed. Ken Levine is one of my favourite minds in this industry.

RedHotChiliPepaSpray4503d ago

possibly maybe slight outside chance of HL episode 3

RememberThe3574503d ago

I was just about to say something about that. I really want to see more about that game.

We haven't seen much of it yet and it didn't get me with the debut trailer at all. But as I said I'll have to wait for more information before I can decide if I'm interessted in this game or not.

Call of Duty Players Disappointed by $80 B.E.A.S.T. Glove Bundle Deal

Recently, players of Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone were met with a new bundle featuring the B.E.A.S.T. Glove, inspired by King Kong's armament in the Godzilla x Kong movie. However, the $80 price tag attached to this themed accessory left many Call of Duty fans feeling underwhelmed.

Morons that allow themselves to be milked continuously by this company is the definition of irony.
Spend more $$ and you'll end up In easier lobbies so you win both ways when ya spend that cash

melons14d ago

Controversy in the COD community feels like it happens within an alternate timeline. Activision will take the piss with something, there will be a momentary fuss about it, and then they will forget about it and carry on anyway. Repeat this cycle literally every year for the rest of time.

Gridknac14d ago

They call that a crack head! Thats what this is really about, its an addiction. People who dont smoke cigarettes look and laugh at the addicts that spend $8-$10 a pack, but they cant help themselves, they are addicted. That same analogy applies perfectly to the whole MT industry. Only an addict that was not thinking clearly would spend this kind of money on something so frivolous. A round of multiplayer provides the same high a person gets from scratching a lotto ticket, or putting money on a sports bet. MT in general need to really be regulated because you have a generation of kids becoming adults who grew up only knowing the MT era of gaming. Its normal to them and they will in turn teach their kids the same by just being a gaming parent and getting their kids involved with them in gaming. Thats why no matter how ridiculous the headlines keep getting out of the MT industry, it never seems to fade or go away.

X-2312d ago

I'm so tired of hearing about what they're doing with this game, its never going to change and it's never going to value the consumer over money, furthermore the people who engage so heavily in the microtransactions I guess allegedly are having a blast and can't wait to do it some more this year when the new version of the game drops.

Certain to have some sort of reference to their online store for CBD/THC chews, which is advertising heavily online the last month or two.

Sciurus_vulgaris28d ago

The randomness of the multiplayer characters is one of reason I quit playing COD after briefly returning in 2022. We got Space Marines, rappers, tree monsters etc. all in a series called “ Modern Warfare”.

OtterX28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

I think if there was ever a time for a competitor to rise up and take away some of Call of Duty's thunder, the time would be now. A military shooter that takes itself seriously, not sold out to Fortnitism. Easier said than done, I know... but the time is ripe.

I can't stand this stuff either.

Palitera28d ago

There are tons of MP shooters that make no profit, if you're looking for one of those

fsfsxii28d ago

You guys have been saying this shit since 2009. Fortunately, nobody’s bringing down cod anytime soon, if ever.

crazyCoconuts28d ago

I agree. I really didn't like how the silliness takes away the gritty origins. That and all the crazy effects... dunno. I'm still playing it but I'd love for someone to steal their cheese and cater to grittier players

OtterX27d ago

@fsfsxii It's not so much wanting COD itself to die as it is wanting this silliness to die. Like CrazyCoconuts said, it takes from the grittiness. Many OG COD players want a straightup Military shooter experience, not silly costume time at Carnival.

is this what the kids want these days a pair of iconic stoners who were big in the 70s and have kind of held on I enjoyed their movies decades ago but I never recall the movie where cheech infiltrates a enemy base while chong snipes for support guess I must of missed that one

Man I'm getting to old for this

Knightofelemia28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Cheech just looks so wrong in the picture.

Profchaos28d ago

Why just why. cod up in smoke

anast28d ago

They charge too much for a game that is kitsch.

MW3 missed its easiest opportunity to give us some of the best Call of Duty maps ever made

From Bootleg to Black Box, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 made a heartbreaking mistake by not remastering the bizarrely forgotten maps from its namesake.
