PlayStation Vita 3G 'Will Not Be a Massive Success'

PlayStation Vita will be irresistible to many customers, even at $249.99. Of course, that’s the Wi-Fi only system. If players want 3G, they’ll need to shell out $299.99 for the handheld, plus a monthly subscription fee to AT&T. Factor in memory cards and the undisclosed cost of games, and we have to wonder if the 3G Vita will be worth the cash.

Let’s face it, you don’t have to look far to locate a Wi-Fi connection. What’s more, it remains to be seen whether Vita’s 3G features will be worthwhile long term.

I think it will be the subscription cards that will kill it in the end. The cards should give you unlimited time for a month, 3 months, 6 months or a year. Charging for hours seems like a stupid idea to me because you can burn through them extremely quickly.

Screw that shit! Wifi model it is then!

Ddouble2494d ago

As far as I know that's only been confirmed for Japan and it's an option.

Also you can go the subscription route if you don't want to pay as you go.

Agent Smith2494d ago

I think one thing that sucks is you have to pay for 3g for each individual device. I already pay for 3g for my iphone, so it's sad i can't use it for my ipad and other stuff.

_Aarix_2494d ago

Youre better off teethering you device and use it for the wifi vita.

blumatt2494d ago (Edited 2494d ago )

Yeah the best option for online gaming on the go for the Vita is to tether a 4G LTE (if available, or 3G) smartphone to the Vita so you can play online no matter where you are.

I truly wish they'd offer a 3rd SKU for the Vita at $350 (retail price) and $99 (subsidized price) and have it be a cell phone too. Imagine how many people would pick this up over a smartphone if it could make phone calls as well.

Of course, I'm sure there will be ways to make "calls" with the Vita like using Skype or Google Voice, or similar VoIP services.

Army_of_Darkness2494d ago (Edited 2494d ago )

I wouldn't pay $350 just so I can make phone calls?! Who makes phone Calls these days anyway when we have the power of TEXTING!! If vita can do that, then I just saved my self money on a new phone;)

dark-hollow2494d ago

ill get the wifi version and get 3g access anywhere through tethering from my phone :D

badz1492494d ago

the lower priced SKU will be the one sold the most. the 360 did it and I think the Vita will be the same.

I have a 3G plan for my phone and I think I'll get the WiFi only version as well and if needed, I'll just tether my 3G connection from my phone. not the best connection available given that 3G connection at my place is far too inconsistent, but for places with established and steady 3G and even 4G coverage, this is actually the best way to do it!

Thatguy-3102494d ago

This is my plan. I will just buy the mobile hotspot on my smartphone and I will benefit just fine from buying the wireless model :)

I think the 3g version might have been aimed at to go up against tablets but I agree.

morganfell2494d ago

Agree. I have 3 ATT accounts already and have a preorder on the Best Buy First Edition bundle so we get it a week early.

Diver2494d ago

hey morg, how does some dudes disagree with facts. dumb people, just dumb.

adorie2494d ago

I disagreed with Morgan, simply because AT&T is crap. lol. I don't agree with him giving AT&T so much of his hard earned money, but hey, in the end it's his, and his alone, but this is just in case you wanted to know why someone disagreed with him.

Diver2494d ago

where did he say att was great? see your disagree doesnt make sense. its like someone saying they have 3 Nissans and you disagree with the statement that they have 3 nissans all cause you dont like nissan. see how that makes no sense.

you just made this statement

OnLive is reaaaly trying to capture some marketshare. I'll give them credit. I thought they'd vanish in an instant, but here they are still.

but i disagreed with you cause i dont like PCs.

Baka-akaB2494d ago (Edited 2494d ago )

Was always planning on getting the wifi version instead , since it's useless for online gaming and digital dls .

Of course there are other uses , but i dont care for them . I have nearly constant wifi access everywhere i go

PSPEE2494d ago

The 3G version isn't practical. People will buy it, but I believe it's a waste of money.

Baka-akaB2494d ago (Edited 2494d ago )

i know some people that wouldnt even know what to do with it ... but would buy it based on the sheer "need" to own the deluxe version of whatever hardware they buy .

Well it's their money .

All i know is it's not a phone so would lose 80% of the appeal and usefulness of 3g by default , imo . Then you've got the issues of the total lack of online 3g gaming on vita , and the 20 mb file limit (and no i wont care about bite sized crap like angry birds or whatever minis) .

I can only imagine at best limited tethering and some skype goodness

tiffac0082494d ago (Edited 2494d ago )

I think the article has it wrong when it said "undisclosed cost of games" when its already been reported that games will range from $9.99 to $39.99.

Just saying~ ^^

Buff10442494d ago

The range is actually $9.99 to $49.99. And Sony neglected to put prices on games yet. So it is in theory, undisclosed costs.

tiffac0082494d ago (Edited 2494d ago )

I stand corrected on the price but nitpicking because the price hasn't been labeled yet on each specific game is also misleading because the price range has been given out, at least it would be proper to mention that.

Like my mistake with the price range there is no excuse for posting incomplete and inaccurate information.

smashcrashbash2494d ago

Saying 'will not be' 'cant' or 'won't' about something before it even is out a few days is pointless. Can we wait and see what people will or won't do before we wildly guess please. Remember when Bluray came out and everyone was hellbent on saying what people will or won't do.
