OMGN: Dark Souls Review

A fair warning: Everything you've heard about Dark Souls up until this point is entirely true. This game isn't a game you enjoy; rather, it's a game you survive. It is not meant to make you feel powerful, nor is it meant to make you satisfied as you tear through enemy after enemy. There is no strong narrative, no interesting characters, and no motivation to continue -- only the sense of pressing on and surviving one more encounter...

Agreed. There were a lot of games this year that were arguably "better" - but I didn't enjoy anything as much as I did Dark Souls.

i didnt enjoy any others as much and i dont think any were "better" ( this games level design is by a mile the best, gameplay was the best, graphics are great, tight controls, awesome sound/music, excellent enemy design ) the only place it falls flat is story / story presentaion. however since the gameplay was that good, i found myself not caring at all and that it something no game has ever been able to do for me.

this is my game of the year, possibly the game of the decade for me.

Yep, and probably my favorite action rpg of all time. I can't think of another game where the melee combat is more fun and polished.

the more time passes and i look at them in retrospect, the more i feel Dark Souls might just be better than Skyrim. it really is a unique and challenging experience.

I noticed the same thing about as time goes by I've come to realize it really did leave a mark on me like no other game has this year. Batman, Skyrim, Deus Ex were my favorites but not in the same sense as Dark Souls.

I wouldn't call it unique seeing as it a sequel and is pretty much identical to demons souls BUT it is the best rpg I played this year. This is coming from a witches 2 fan. I wish more companies would release on pc, while it does look good the pc version on my rig would be Atleast 60 fps. Not to mention custom missions!!!!!!!! But my ps3 worked fine (nothing against 360 players just got it on ps3 cuz that's where it originated)

this is exactly how i feel, at first i thought skyrim was my goty, then i decided to stop being a fanboy ( i have loved elder scrolls for years ) and really thought about it, i enjoyed ds way more. i couldnt stop playing, with skyrim thoough, i havent played it in two weeks now

Excellent game. With the release of Dark Souls and Skyrim, I have started to change my thinking on buying games. I have decided going forward unless the game is going to give me alot of play time I am renting. I just can no longer shell out 60 bones for a 10 or 15 hour game. It will have to be an RPG, a game I want to play multiple times, or if its a shooter it will need alot of content like Gears 3.

The only games I am definitely getting next year is Witcher 2 (360), ME3, and Kingdoms of Amalur.

The prevalence of parrying: Why is it so popular?

Parrying has been creeping into more games, with almost every high-profile title of the last few years featuring it in some way.  Why?

i understand the authors frustration i'm not the best at parrying in games. not that i can't complete a game that requires it but it is a definite harder thing for me than other kinds of techniques in games. which might be the main reason it's so heavily added in games nowadays. want to make your game challenging without having to do a lot of work? just add a parry boss. (what i mean by parry boss is a boss you have to beat by parrying such that their attacks will kill you otherwise)

Dudeson184d ago (Edited 184d ago )

I always think it's fine as long as such games also have the roll/dodge panic button. But I understand the will to parry, it seems so cinematic in a fight when you pull it off.
