Game of the Year Simply Cannot Exist

The author postulates that there can be no true Game of the Year.

From the article: "Just in the past few months, there has been an epic traffic jam of glorious titles to play and spend money on. I've been sitting on my ass so much that even my chair has started to complain. It squeaks when my butt cheeks clench up in tense, terrorist-fragging moments."

Dissappointing gen. Last gen I had my favorite games that were just godly to me

Grand Theft Auto 3, Final Fantasy X, Silent Hill 2. Badass life changing games.

No such thing this gen, Bioshock? It's a good game but it's not in the league of those games. The characters look toyish in Bioshock. There's a lot of great games but nothing to where I can say these are my absolute cult favorites this generation.

I'm still waiting for "THE" game of this generation

PS3 Limps on and on6401d ago (Edited 6401d ago )

Assassins Creed hahaha.

Halo 3? Rehash from last gen, and it was never one of my personaly favorites anyway.

Ass Effect? I don't think so.

Uncharted? Great but more of the popcorn action flick than a cult favorite.

Call of Duty 4? Please, how many people get put to sleep by that history lesson? Military simulators put me to sleep. I find it more like going to school.

Rockband/Guitar Hero? F*ggy games for idiots who imagine themselves rocking. okay?? But WTF does that have to do with being a gamer?

Kholinar6401d ago

Of course it can exist.

It simply means no more or no less than any other year. Play what you like. GOTY for you doesn't have to be GOTY for anyone else. Be content (even if it is Barbie's Magical Cowmilking Farm and Hair Salon Extreme).

RadientFlux6401d ago

IMO "Barbie's Magical Cowmilking Farm" is the game of the century

Kholinar6401d ago (Edited 6401d ago )

'Course it is.

The rest would see the light too... if the cows were aliens with prehensile tails and tentacle guns... and the Barbie was a anime-influenced femme-fatale with uber-blade exploding sex pheromones/shotgun wristbands... and the milking was... TOTAL ANNIHILATION!!!!

But they're just blinded by convention.

Geez...

Gamingisfornerds6401d ago

But we definitely have a 'Comment of the Year' winner
here!

Nice one. :)

solar6401d ago

OmegaKulu6401d ago

Hello Kitty Adventure Island is easily THE GOTY. =P

Kholinar6401d ago (Edited 6401d ago )

Whatever... :(

Kate and Ashley's Fab Shopping Epic rules all.

edit: Btw, I didn't push disagree. I'm not quite that silly.

PS3 Limps on and on6401d ago

Games that change the way we look at games. Games like Final Fantasy 7 or Resident Evil 2 that started the horror trend.

Last gen it was Grand Theft Auto 3, and Halo.

No such game like that yet this generation. Maybe Gears of War is one, but then it's gonna be a weak generation.

desolationstorm6401d ago

Well maybe some games define a generation but I would say Mario 64 was way more important that RE2. FFVII Id give you that it wasnt the game who started cg movies just well will be the remembered game from that genearation of gaming.

I would also like to say that defining this generation you might have to give a nod towards wii sports simply for what it has accomplished. It will be important and remembered upon years down the road. Not saying its goty or best game ever simply saying for what its done for the industry and gaming is as important as what ffVII did for jap rpgs. mario 64 did for 3d games and GTAIII did for open world inviroments.

Probotector6401d ago

Game of the year EXISTS: Super Mario Galaxy. That's all folks.

So the game isn't even done and they're already asking for more money?

theindiearmy91d ago

What do you mean by "more money"? It's a free-to-play game. No one paid anything to be in the closed beta. All purchases made during the closed beta will be converted back to in-game currency for players to re-use however they wish after launch.

isarai91d ago (Edited 91d ago )

More money than what EA is giving them to make the game. Didn't think id have to spell it out. How's about they finish the damn game first before asking people to dump money into it. It's not like they need the cashflow to get across the finish line, it's EA not some indie studio, or crowdfunded project

theindiearmy90d ago

Or maybe it's a playtest and they want to play test the store to make sure it works before launching. Because if they launched the game and the store was broke you'd all be making silly comment about that. "tHeY dIdn'T eVeN TeSt ThE sToRe bEfoRe lAunCh."

LordoftheCritics93d ago

This has been in playtest for 5 years.

I won't say any more

BISHOP-BRASIL92d ago

Always good to see EA has its priorities straight...

Muigi92d ago

Two Tony Hawk games will have been released before this comes out wow.

got_dam92d ago

Is anyone really surprised? This is the same company that once considered charging for every time you reload your weapon in Battlefield. These guys are the worst.

They already did that in 2017 with origins. I don’t think a reboot is on the cards when Ubisoft is about to go down under lol

I hope the splinter cell remake sees the light of day before the company closes

Inverno103d ago

I doubt they'll be closing, but they are primed to be eaten up by a bigger comp. Also 2017 was nearly a decade ago, it could use another reboot or rather it should just be retired.

RaidenBlack102d ago

Origins was the reboot.
But that also alienated the original AC lovers, abit. Not everybody adores the perma-change of the IP to be vast RPGs.
What I instead propose is, alternate between Valhalla/Shadows type AC RPGs and Mirage/ACII like non-RPG releases.

PrecursorOrb103d ago

It’d be nice if they made parkour feel new

monkey602103d ago

Put the series to bed, It's tired! Revisit your stagnant properties.

Profchaos103d ago

What do you do when you've already milked everything dry

Noskypeno102d ago

What is old might feel new again. A new splinter cell with semi open levels but still having a linear structure (not just one giant open world) that have multiple paths to complete the objective but still have stealth be the main priority would feel fresh, especially with modern graphics and military gadgets .

FinalFantasyFanatic102d ago

I agree, from anecdotal evidence, all franchises eventually stagnate, it might be a good time to start something new.

PRIMORDUS103d ago

"it might be time for a reboot." No it might be time to put this shit to rest for a few yrs. A good 4-5 then come back.

Profchaos103d ago

Total franchise reboot. This ac game is basically the hail Mary to keep Ubisoft alive if this fails the share price will be so low they will be forced to sell and likely absorbed into another org as the Ubisoft name carries almost no weight.

Don't get me wrong they will end up selling after ac regardless but it will be the difference of getting the deal they want vs the deal they don't
