Why Can’t Anyone Launch a Decent PC Game These Days?

GameFront, "The outgoing year of Two-Thousand and Eleven is a milestone in gaming for two interesting reasons. First, despite being a year laden with sequels, it saw a pretty huge number of great releases all the way through — ranging from Dead Space 2 to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. And second: It was a year of absolutely dismal triple-A PC launches from major publishers."

Because developers need to be greedy and rush out games that are broken so need a day 1 patch.

“We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games,” Carmack said. “That statement will enrage some people, but it is hard to characterize it otherwise; both console versions will have larger audiences than the PC version.”

That there answers the question. All those companies that PCs made into big household names, made them what they are today, have turned their backs on the PC and develop for consoles. At some point they may throw the PC a bone by porting a game from the console to it, usual a fast and cheap port (meaning it's not optimized, has tons of bugs and generally looks no better (if not worse) then the console version).

From a cut throat business stand point you can see their point, but they are the ones who caused the problem. If they had not been so eager to jump ship and had developed for PCs (not ported) and gave the PC platform the respect it deserves then the PC market would be a whole lot more lucrative. Each time the PC gets passed over for a AAA title, each time it gets a shoddy port, each time it gets broken/draconian DRM ... each and every time it drives the PC gamer away from purchasing any of their products. This in turn leads developers to not want to focus on the PC market and instead treat it like a bastard child they can't seem to get rid of. And so the vicious circle goes.

Console versions drag PC-development, why bother to upscale the games they are making, or give it extra tought. Just for example look at games like Civilization V, StarCraft 2, and Shogun 2, you don't see them on consoles, right?
