Xbox 360 Sales Not Boosted By Gears 3, says Pachter

Gears of War 3 is a triple-A title and an Xbox 360 exclusive that many would consider to be a true system seller. Epic's blockbuster conclusion to the Gears trilogy quickly sold 3 million copies, but the game isn't necessarily helping Microsoft to sell more Xbox 360 units, if you ask Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter.

Well Xbox 360 sales sure were boosted by something this entire fall shopping season, since the console has been beating the competition handily.

Gears 3 is the kind of game that existing owners would buy. Newcomers to the series wouldnt start off at #3. At best they would jump in at 2 but likely the best place to start is the beginning.

What sparked sales is the kinect and various other games that got the marketing attention. Like Batman Arkham City. You dont need to have played the first to get into this game.

Ultimately i would say price is the driving factor. Holiday bundles priced cheap.

Except the Xbox 360 has had record sales all year long. This started with Kinect being released last year and I'm attributing it to this.

Steadily since last year, the average selling price of Xbox 360 has gone up as reported by Gamasutra.

Does price have anything to do with it? Sure, but then again the competition also lowered their prices.

Kinect turns out to be a console driver!

If kinect is selling consoles it only pollutes the consoles sold number, because those new owners are not likely to buy core games - thus core game publishers aren't necessarily going to invest in xbox more. So, in effect it does make a difference whether it's kinect or gears 3 selling consoles - at least for publishers who make core games and core gamers.

No more than it has in the past, if history is any judge. Previously "casual" gamers weren't divided up into different segment like they do now.

However, that is no longer relevant for 3rd party "core" game support as there is enough user base for all platforms.

That said, the core market is long tapped, and at this stage at best you can do is try to "steal" a few customers from your competitor that are looking to buy an additional console.

If you haven't bought a console in the last 5-6 years, you aren't likely to be a core gamer.

I think PS3 owners who are actually closet Gears lovers went out and picked up a 360, hell, Gears could boost the sell of any platform, lol.

darthv722930d ago

that is a strong possibility. Just as there are more than likely some 360 only owners that got the PS3 to play uncharted or killzone.

It never fails that even with the satisfaction of the platform you prefer, there will always be something on a competing platform that will catch your eye as well.

Hey, spreading the gaming love. Nothing wrong with that.

Sales in September were definitely influenced by Gears 3. You dont sell 3million units of a game & not have it impact the console.

Also, it is the 2nd best selling game on the 360 for the year! So, what the hell is he talking about "its far from the best selling game on the console. There is only 1 game ahead of Gears 3, MW3 for the year.

Pachter gives Captain Obvious a run for his money.

Bigpappy2930d ago (Edited 2930d ago )

Pachter is just wrong again, thats all. If you go back and look at the month Gears was released and compare the numbers to the previous month or the compitition, you would see a significant increase in sales.

Holidays = Casuals coming out to buy
