OXM UK: Developers need to be both "creative" and "surgical" to survive next hardware jump, reckons Epic's frontman.
I wish Cliff Bleszinski would go away.
I mean, it's good, but it's not triple A material. Point being He's right.
Horrible point. Horrible example. CoD is a series that has taken the "More of the Same" method to a whole new level, but there are plenty of developers out there who still build new engines and push boundaries of gameplay, graphics, and storytelling. There will always be AAA titles. Cliffy is just running out of ideas.
AAA refers to budget & marketing. Games like Fable, Resistance, Bioshock, Halo, GT, GTA are AAA games. Games like Geometry Wars, Super Stardust, Calling All Cars, etc. are not AAA games.
He is one of the most overrated guy in the biz. Really.
the guy who made rage is over rated cliff is still pretty descent
Sorry but Carmack is a legend my friend
well.. from what I read from n4g... that legend became a myth.
Dont we all
When was the last time you were right about something, Cliffy? You're turning into Michael Pachter.
Wow I thought Cliffy would have nothing but positive things to say about nextgen hardware. Didnt he say a few months ago that he wanted nextgen console graphics to look as good as Avatar the movie. Now he's saying the opposite. Make up your mind FFS
Everybody would want graphics like that. That's not really a unique opinion or anything. He's speaking realistically here, though. Not what he wants, but what needs to happen in the industry, in his opinion.
WTF are you guys complaining about? Did he even say anything bad?
No. He spoke the truth. Development costs WAYYY too high, and we're setting ourselves up for a disaster if we can't control development costs. He's absolutely right, and most of the people here didn't read or know what he was talking about because if they did, they know this is what a LOT of developers fear right now.
In other words "damn I lucked out with Gears, Microsoft wanted an exclusive blockbuster so marketed my game to death, I couldn't fail but Bulletstorm was a flop and now I'm worried my next project won't have those microsoft millions to carry it through so I'll start slipping out a few excuses ready for me to refer back to in another year or two's time"
There is so much wrong with this post, I just don't know where to begin.
never laughed so hard at a comment before.. I think it's the alien avatar that adds to the comment..
Like hell it will.
No if you make your own console and have 20 studios making games only for you!
He's making a good point. Development costs are high enough as it is with this current cycle. "AAA" refers to budget. Cliffy B is right in saying that next generation, costs will be so high developers may turn to making small budget titles that warrant great sales. Someone mentioned Call Of Duty as being a big budget title. Developing the Call of Duty Modern Warfare games has been relatively inexpensive overall. Infinity Ward were given a huge budget for Modern Warfare 2 by Activision but only used a fraction of it. Similarly, Gears of War 2 was made on a budget of 12 million dollars, and I read that Uncharted 2 also had a relatively small budget. Cliffy B may be saying that next gen, developers will reduce their budgets even further to remain conservative with their anticipated success. No more 100 million dollar games with astronomical advertising campaigns.
