Nintendo sees skyward sales on Black Friday

Super Mario 3D Land and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword helped Nintendo to a successful kickoff of the holiday sales season.

The new Nintendo 3DS game, Super Mario 3D Land, which landed in stores Nov. 11, has become the fastest-selling portable Mario game in company history, selling more than 500,000 units since launch, says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime.

Its funny. Nintendo knows software drives hardware sales yet they botched the 3DS launch. After these sales Im sure Nintendo will do right by the Wii U leading to next year.

the wii was a casual experiment. it worked, zelda and nintendos first party games are good, and soooome 3rd party games are good but their are almost no good games on it otherwise.....damn xenoblade and last story only coming out in japan and europe...makes no sense.....

I never said it was a failure. Nintendo did a poor job with the 3DS at launch which caused them to drop the price shortly afterwards. But after seeing their impressive holiday lineup I know that it will do great during the holidays.

Congratulations Nintendo for turning things around. Gamers will be very happy with the 3DS.

Judging by Launch Date and length of time from launch, its beat the PS2.

Judging by all time, of course the PS2 has been on the market for an extra 4 years or so.

Nintendo shouldn't have announced the Wii U last year, they should have added another exclusive or two into the US market this year and then announced the Wii U next year when they actually had something to show off, like say the console itself, some real specs and real footage of games being played on it.

They tried to take a much bigger bite then their mouth would allow, they should have solely focused on the 3DS this year and worry about the console next. Just my opinion though, still glad to see them going strong. I actually really like my Wii.

I kind of agree. It isn't that they shouldn't have shown the wiiu this year in my opinion, just that they shouldn't have made it the focus at e3. An announcement and quick look would have been more than enough, seeing as how we still know so little about it anyway.
This e3 really should have been the 3ds, Nintendo wise.

You can't trust third parties, its that simple.

They announced it a year or so early because they wanted third parties to put a full year into development.

They could have had 3rd part studios work on games in private. Do you think Microsoft or Sony is going to announce 3rd party games for their next consoles without some sort of agreement in place? They work on them in private for a while before we the public are made aware of them.

Nintendo could have had a much bigger Holiday had they just held off and waited.

Look at Microsoft, there is a ton of speculation that they will release a console next year, just like Nintendo, but Microsoft didn't blow their load at last E3 by announcing a new console that is a year and a half away.

Not doing so allows the current 360 to sell better then ever, people would hold off on buying the current Xbox if they knew for sure a new one was right around the corner, it's smart business. Nintendo kind of dropped the ball, they could have created a lot of excitement if they actually had a console to show off last E3, instead they focus on the tablet like controller and don't really show the actual Wii U, which ends up looking like a original white Xbox 360 and a fatter Wii on it's side.
