This Generation The Call Of Duty Series Has Sold An Estimated 89.3 Million Copies To Date

Velocity Gamer: So Modern Warfare 3 has been released and the sales figures have already destroyed anything else that's released in recent years and may be the biggest entertainment launch in history. Well, I've always wondered...

So what you're saying is that 89.3 million beer mats have been sold? I'm sorry, I couldn't resist :D

If its a true number, then it's utterly terrifying. And to thing that I used to worry about games never becoming socially accepted and doing commercially well.

kaveti66164685d ago

Beer mats?

Call of Duty has more players online than any other game on consoles. The DLC for Call of Duty generates more revenue than full-scale titles sold at 65 bucks a copy. Call of Duty is a series that encompasses a very large age group. Beer mats? What are you doing, looking for agrees/bubbles?

The amount of play time that Call of Duty makes everything else look like a beer mat, or more correctly, a coaster.

WolfLeBlack4685d ago

It was a joke, mate. I was simply taking the mickey out of Call of Duty's success.

DontShoot-Me-Bro4685d ago (Edited 4685d ago )

Is anyone else getting bored of gaming?

I am a hardcore gamer, but over the last month, even with the "blockbusters" I am soooo bored of gaming!!!

Especially multiplayer games, single player games like Skyrim, I guess Saints Row: The Third is fun.

I remember my PS2 days, so many memories, so many laughs so many awesome games, but this gen, for me personally its the same stuff every year.

I'm talking about COD, but I'm talking about other games aswell, Assassin Creed has turned into a cash cow now, so has Need For Speed. My fav game Killzone 2, went downhill when Guerilla Games tried to turn it into a COD type game.

When people explained BF3 to me, when i saw videos, it looked damn hardcore and intense. When i played it....some problems in the game were in COD.

1. Spawning is a problem
2. Why is it a fast paced type game, i wanted a slow paced team-oriented hardcore game. You see people just running around jumping out of corners.
3. BF3 is not a typical Battlefield game, they have made it quicker and more COD-ish.

MAG (Massive Action Game) as many of you don't like it, was more of a team oriented game then Battlefield. MAG is a great game and for you to win a game, you HAVE to work as a team, you can NEVER go rambo.

BF3 does not require teamwork, and you don't really get any teamwork, you don't have to rely on your team. Which is what Battlefield was all about no?

Look at Capcom, ruined everything
Square Enix ruined everything

Those 2 companies alone last gen gave me so many memories, for my childhood i had FF & all the Capcom fighting games!, Now where are those games gone!

Oh and then there's buying DLC so you actually can have a complete game.

LOGICWINS4685d ago

"My fav game Killzone 2, went downhill when Guerilla Games tried to turn it into a COD type game."

Play KZ3 with Move. It will remind you of why you got into gaming in the first place. VERY immersive. I recommend Yakuza 3/Yakuza 4 as well.

DontShoot-Me-Bro4685d ago (Edited 4685d ago )

Yes you are right, i played Yakuza 3 but never finished it, that is a great game, hours and hours of fun, missions after missions. Thanks for reminding me. Also will need to pick up Y4.

I just can't get into KZ3, i doubt PS Move will change that, but i will give it a try. Thanks

Killzone 2 needed teamwork, i remember on Ravens Academy, when there was all 5 missions.

The whole team use to be waiting outside a room to set the 2 charges, and the other team were just camped in the room, trying to protect the charges.

Everyone was spamming grenades, trying to find another way round. people throwing in the spawn grenades, to help the team out

All you KZ2 players will know what I'm talking about, Ravens Academy was so much fun, that map use to be packed out every game.

@ WolkLeBlack

Yeah i think you are right, need to go back and play the games i enjoyed. Will pick up Killzone2, i wonder if any people are actually playing it, as i have been told not many people are even playing Killzone 3 anymore, so hmm.

one2thr4685d ago

@Hasj
It's "Radec Academy"...... And yes, that stage I eventually hated seeing that a squad of 4 can go "300" mode on a team of 16 players, until somebody decides to go for the flank a discombobulate them.

WolfLeBlack4685d ago

Everybody loses their gaming mojo every now and then, mate. When it happens to me I find the best remedy is to go back and play some of my old favorites.

It's certainly not affecting me, though. At the moment I'm swapping between Skyrim, LEGO Harry Potter 2, Saint's Row 3, Rayman Origins and Battlefield 3. Let the good times roll :)

urwifeminder4685d ago

Yeah ive almost cured my gaming addiction played that many games nothing stands out anymore the whole industry is stale and boring i must agree.

slayorofgods4685d ago

I will agree with you on the FPS genre, I really can't understand why people keep buying COD games.....

But, Skyrim is a blockbuster and is really starting a new era and capitalizing on a lost gaming group. It has everything hardcore gamers like.

Sure, I miss the quality games by Squaresoft. SE took a direction that called gamers less complex and with shorter attention spans. For a while it looked like all old complex series such as FF were going to made into action games that appeal to the casual market.

Along comes Bethesda and continues to make those games with complex rpg elements SE claims we all hate. Now, we are really seeing Bethesda taking SE's old market and it turns out the market is a lot bigger then all these game companies thought.

Because Skyrim is a commercial success, a lot of game publishers are going to start taking a look at this game, just like they did when Halo was a commercial success.

MidnytRain4685d ago

You might want to try exploring new genres.

dark-hollow4685d ago

play the mass effect series.
Your faith in this gen will be restored!

Belasco4685d ago

Spawning in Gears 3, at least from my experience, is a huge problem. I have never played a game where half the opposing team can spawn behind me in the blink of an eye, god forbid I use iron sights for a split second. And yes, I suck massively at Gears, beat you to it!

I wonder what mario sold this gen. It has to be more since neew super mario bros alone sold over 20 mil.

Burning_Finger4685d ago

They should get a medal for selling the same **** every year..

Trophy Unlocked: Sucker

Achievement Unlocked: I R Stupid

FourGees4685d ago

U MAD?

I swear you haters are even more obsessed with COD than the fans themselves.

STK0264685d ago

Yes, let's call them stupid for buying a game they actually enjoy.

I wonder when it became wrong to buy a game you like. Some people on N4G (and some other gaming websites) seem to believe that Call of Duty sells more than say, Psychonauts or some other quality but more niche game, only because of the brand. While the CoD brand does help alot, people buy it every year because the game offers some fast paced arena gameplay and a majority of people like it.

Belasco4685d ago

I agree, I don't see how COD selling so well affects my enjoyment when I play the games I like. It's an utter waste of energy to be pissed that alot of people enjoy a game you don't care for. Or am I the asshole here? Should I hate it to in order to fit in with the mob? I don't like COD, but I refuse to piss on someone elses parade, because I don't like it when they do it to me for being a Halo fanatic.

radphil4685d ago (Edited 4685d ago )

It's called Mainstreaming.

i.e: Getting the masses that don't play other styles of games often, to "join along".

There's many people that barely touch any other game outside of CoD, and sports.

Hicken4685d ago

Enjoyment is not the problem. Some kids actually STILL enjoy yo-yos.

But if I'm paying for a championship-level- or whatever the hell they call it- yo-yo, I don't want one that's little more than a rebadged $1 yo-yo. On top of that, if it's the best selling yo-yo on the market, I'm definitely not paying top-dollar for the new one if it performs almost exactly like the old one. If they can't make significant improvements, then they shouldn't put out a new yo-yo. They should keep selling the old one until they have a new one worthy of the full price.

Enjoy Call of Duty if you must. I don't mind that in the slightest. But don't act like it's not foolish to pay $60 (more in other countries) for a game that's hardly changed over the last one.

one2thr4685d ago (Edited 4685d ago )

Radphil, is right about that. I tried to get many of my "CODzbies"(COD + Zombies:pronounced "CODz'-bees) friends to play different games, Hell even different genres but they usually respond with "Oh this/that games ass" (Dead Space 1 & 2, GRan Turismo 5, little big planet 1 & 2, Wipeout HD Fury, Resistance 1 -3, street fighter)
"That game wack, because I die to quick (Killzone 2 & 3, BF:BC2, BF3, Uncharted 1-3), what I hate is when people clearly see me playing BF3 and still decide to invite me to a COD game/match when i purposely did not buy it until i heard some good news about it. But yet its a discussion I cannot win, seeing that im out numbered by CODzbies, and everybody know that zombies get you in volume not smarts.....

Modern Warfare 3 flooded with cheaters after arrival on Xbox Game Pass

Players are using hacks to gain an advantage in the game, such as aimbots and wall hacks. The first gives a player superhuman aiming abilities, while a wall hack lets you see through walls to gauge where other players are.

standard.co.uk
Jin_Sakai55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

“These hacks are typically used by PC players, but those playing on PC via Xbox Game Pass are identified as Xbox players in multiplayer lobbies.”

This is pretty dumb to say the least.

Cacabunga54d ago

All about them headshots for Xbox

blackblades54d ago

That's a WTF, they suppose to be labeled as pc users even if its on PC game pass. They mess that up big time.

XiNatsuDragnel55d ago

Oh bad this will be entertaining to watch

Number1TailzFan54d ago

If AI keeps getting better (and it will) it's just a matter of time before there's more sophisticated cheats even for consoles, and they wouldn't even need to be running on it, I have little doubt about that.

lelo2play54d ago

Don't Gamepass online games have anti-cheat systems?
If not, that's pretty dumb. Microsoft need to fix that asap.

Rynxie54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

They won't ever fix this problem, unless they (developers, publishers, Sony and MS) go after the cheat providers directly. You no longer need to hack consoles to use hacks. During the ps360 days, they were going after cheat devices, but it was a cat and mouse game. These cheating methods were around during those days, it's nothing new, but they kept it under control. Since the PS4/Xbox one generation, they stopped going after these cheating devices and it became widespread. Which I find odd, since they started charging for online play (PS4).

StormSnooper54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

Possibly, this is because the companies were going after cheats because the same cheats were being used to pirate the games, whereas today, the companies use online verification to prevent piracy, thus eliminating the need to go after people who cheat only to gain an advantage in the game. As long as the cheater remains below the radar, and does not completely break the game, the companies look the other way as their wallets are not threatened by it. (that is my completely Uneducated opinion on the matter)

pwnmaster300054d ago

I mean, COD games was always filled with hackers, nothing new. I can’t blame MS on this. Activision had years to try and fix this. Might take MS some time to make some change.

Rude-ro54d ago

It all depends…
Microsoft’s guidance on how to handle gamepass on pc and their love to force crossplay with pc seems like a them issue.
And they own activision, so it is still a them issue.

StormSnooper54d ago

lol well that sucks.

Is there a reason this happened upon arrival on xbox?

Activision Reportedly Sold An AI-Generated Skin In Call Of Duty

The Yokai's Wrath bundle was released despite previous guarantees by Activision that A.I. would not be used for final assets, per the report. Instead, Activision assured developers it was simply for internal concepts. That, of course, was not followed through. For what it's worth, per the PlayStation Store, 2,400 COD Points cost $19.99, meaning players potentially spent real-life money on a skin that was not created by an actual human.

As far as A.I. use goes across Activision, a source told Wired that 2D artists are utilizing A.I. to aid their work. That is a result of mass layoffs, in which many 2D artists were impacted. “A lot of 2D artists were laid off,” the source named Noah said. “Remaining concept artists were then forced to use A.I. to aid in their work.” Mandatory A.I. trainings have been implemented, according to Noah.

It is not ubisoft has a ai tool for crating stories/script's they even talked about npc's having there own ai speech like we see with those skyrim mods.

Ai is the future sadly which sucks in so many way's.

S2Killinit57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

Activision. And MS. They will ruin console gaming forever.

Oh and where the FRIGGIN outrage people? When Sony makes a remaster of a masterpiece single player story driven game, they get roasted. But this, this, goes unnoticed? Then don’t complain that you aren’t getting enough single player story games.

How is that a response to what I said? Are they also selling AI generated skins?

@S2Killinit

You never mentioned skins in your comment just stated its all microsoft's fault like so many others.

When like i showed they are late to the ball game as every other company is using or plans to use ai in various field.

If you combine everything then its getting closer to hitting a button and poof out comes a game no soul no passion nothing.

Right now its art/3d models/skins/writing/voice work some and coding can all be done via ai.

S2Killinit57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

That was the whole point of my comment, I wrote it in response to the article. Instead of focusing on making exciting games and developing talented developers, they are busy making AI generated skins that people are buying for huge sums of money. Then, some people turn around and shit on Sony when it tries to capitalize on single player classics by making remasters, and the same people then complain that they want more single player games. MS cannabalized the industry because they never thought making games was essential to their business. So, instead of nurturing theor own studios, they let them die, then went and shrunk the industry, hurting interests of every gamer in the world. Anytime there is a bad trend in the industry, MS is at the helm, leading the way. That is what I’m saying.

smashman9857d ago

I'm sorry but do you honestly believe Sony will sit out of A.I. Every executive at every one of these publishers is wetting themselves in delight at the prospect of A.I. You best believe that once we start seeing it spread throughout the industry Sony won't be too far behind. The only people we'll have to blame are the consumers themselves.

S2Killinit56d ago (Edited 56d ago )

No, I don't believe that Sony will not do the same. But, as I mentioned, MS is always the first to embrace such things and create the worst trends. Once they establish that this is the best way to make money, everyone else will follow. (Have to follow if they want to stay competitive)

thesoftware73056d ago

S2, and blackblades:

All from the Horse's mouth below.

"Artificial intelligence (AI) in video games is crucial for Gen Z and Gen Alpha, who seek “personalization across everything,” says PlayStation executive Asad Qizilbash."

“Advancements in AI will create more personalized experiences and meaningful stories for consumers.”

"He emphasized that AI could enable non-player characters to interact with players based on their actions, enhancing the personal connection within the game."

Yeah, Just MS and Activision...smh

S2Killinit56d ago

I’ve already explained myself twice. Quit your false equivalence, same thing the xbox fateful pulled before and after the ABK acquisitions. Which by the way, blew up in your faces real good. Now, doing the same thing when someone brings up MS’s nefarious behavior, defend them to the end, and watch them scorch gaming as they have been. At least rest of us can take consolation in that the smoke will go in your eyes before anyone else’s.

thesoftware73056d ago (Edited 56d ago )

"Quit your false equivalence, same thing the xbox fateful pulled before and after the ABK acquisitions. Which by the way, blew up in your faces real good."

I'm not sure what you are talking about, you seem to have a issue communicating, because we are on a post about using AI to create video games content, and you put that solely at the feet of MS and Activision, when it's being, and will be used industry wide, right from Sony mouth, I would say it's relevant...then you went on to give Sony a spit shine slob down about a masterpiece TLoU when this had absolutely nothing to do with Sony or TLoU, then you attempted to clean up your rambling spit shine with no real backing for a ridiculous comment.

Obviously you meant to post that nonsensical over exaggerated comment. I also don't know what blew up in people faces, I am perfectly fine with the game industry, I don't have time to be internet outraged about nothingness.

Really read your comment and listen to what you said.

"Activision. And MS. They will ruin console gaming forever."

Bro, for real? Really? Seriously? It's that serious? So there is nothing Sony and Nintendo can do against MS and Activision? MS is 3rd place with you even talking about?

If we stay relevant on MTX, then you still sound ridiculous because again, you lay it all at MS and Activision's feet when almost all companies have used some form of MTX, including yup... Sony.

S2Killinit52d ago

I read this comment, it boiled down to “seeiously?”.

My answer: yes seriously. Since you didn’t say anything else, what else can I tell you? Yes MS is seriously ruining gaming. They have been for some time, and working their way to where we are today, and aren’t even done yet. MS are the worst thing to happen to console gaming.

"The Yokai's Wrath bundle was released despite previous guarantees by Activision that A.I. would not be used for final assets, per the report."

We're talking concept art? Because as of right now there's no way to generate a final 3D model with final textures. So the final assets don't use AI. That's not to say that it sucks for 2D artist that it's easier to generate visual ideas and build from them leading to less 2D artists needed (really sucks), but are they say the final concept art was completely AI generated and then 3D artists built from that? And yes, I'll pile on that Activision as a publisher and their developers I have experience with suck and they'll do whatever, ethics be damned.

montebristo57d ago

I understand why people think it’s good idea to Unionize to fight back against such things but it’s not. It’s a bad idea. It’s activisions wet dream to have these pumped out weekly by some AI. Protect your neck!

Will be interesting to see what sort of numbers GP users draw in come tomorrow. It is believed that this is one many have been waiting for.

62d ago
thesoftware73061d ago

Darth,

That is not accurate; this game is old, and most people who want it have already bought it. You might get a small number of subs, but we will mostly see a good influx of players(not new subs) from people with Game Pass who will try it, which is what happened with D4.

CoD: BO 6 will be the test for actual sub numbers.

darthv7261d ago

That's fair... seeing as many have been saying they want CoD in GP. My comment was more of , now that its here... what can it do. Im sure there will be other titles in the franchise that will either entice or turn off different users.

Bathyj61d ago

No one's buying a console and signing up for a monthly bill just to get this game to avoid buying it. That's ridiculous. Besides everyone bagged the crap out of this on release for the 4 hour campaign.

andy8561d ago

Sweet. Never got round to it on release. I'll give the campaign a go
