SG: I’ve been up and down on RAGE. On one hand, the gameplay aspects, mainly driving and shooting, are pretty solid; however, on the other, the game itself is about as common as you can get for a first-person shooter.
Yep. People say gameplay> everything else but for me the best gameplay in the world with absolutely tight intuitive game mechanics and clever AI can still be extremely boring if there is no purpose for it provided by the narrative.
Amazing gameplay can make a good game but story will always make a good game great. The problem with Rage is that the story AND gameplay was fairly bland, all it had were graphics but the gunplay wasn't anything special and the AI was COD-Esque but CODs story is at least more exciting due to the characters. As a comparison, Killzone 3s gunplay is way more visceral and enjoyable with quality AI and Halo's AI makes gunplay fun because it takes more skill. Vanquish and Bayonetta are games with fairly lame stories but are still very fun games due solely to the gameplay.
Having played ID games since Doom - I don't know why I haven't been able to get into Rage... could be because UC3 and Skyrim have taken up so much of my time since I purchased it, but I hope to get more time with it - first few hours or so aren't very interesting IMO
I really like the way skyrim presents things, I dont feel like im sitting around waiting for a cutscene to end at any point.
very underrated game!!
the game is decent with smooth gameplay, but the story is absolute sh!t.
the problem with rage is that it actually does try to have a story. People talk to you about stuff and its just boring and breaks up gameplay. Rage affirms that many games shouldnt bother with story.
Rage was a waste of time, especially after you did everything it offered which wasn't much. Every enemy was a result of a trigger. Walk into a room, here they come. Drive to a valley here they come. Nothing was ever random, everything was always scripted. Rage is the last ID game I will ever buy. They still have yet to go beyond the script and create dynamic environments and AI. Hello elder scrolls and fallout. Yeah they have scriptes events, but they are embedded in a sea of random events. Don't waste money on rage. Rent at best.
Yeah, an underwhelming game. I think they should have focused on the shooting parts. The driving gets old fast. Graphics are nice and gameplay solid, but the game feels empty and repetitive...
add this game to the list of failure like many others from id...
Uh, what other failures? All they have is Quake and Doom, and Wolfenstein to their name. All ground breaking innovations to the industry. When did you just start gaming, last week?
the last quake was garbage. the last Wolfenstein was garbage the last doom was garbage. now can add rage on that list [email protected] it's just my opinion it may be harsh for others to accept....but ID has not produced a single ground breaking game this gen....you are allowed to disagree with me and that's fair... on the last quake/wolfenstein subject...why allow such garbage to be developed and backed by the ID name?that shows they didn't care about the quality of the titles...
Last Quake was not developed by ID Software. Raven Software. Last Wolfenstein not developed by ID Software. Raven Software. As for Doom 3, I don't even see what you're getting at. Reviews were great, sales were good. It was a critical and commercial success, it was received well by everyone. I played it and thoroughly enjoyed it, seems you take your own blind ignorant opinion and believe it's universally a fact. @above. Can anyone really blame them? They were a private company going through budget issues and had to sign on old IP's to Raven Software to do two games while they were working on RAGE to continue to stay afloat, right before signing on to Zenimax to help budget their games. RAGE was underwhelming, but don't make out as if their one mistake means they've made nothing but "failures". Quite ignorant.
John Carmack, a long with his building up the hype machine is the reason why Rage failed.dude did so many interviews acting like Rage was going to be the best fps title ever created this gen.many people give ID a free pass because of their past titles.but what have they produced/created worthwhile this gen?
Who is giving a free pass, you're taking one game that didn't succeed and tossing the towel as if ID has done no good, talk about a desire for failure.
I played the story mode within 10hours and was left confused, why put a game on two discs if the second disc is like 2 hours long. Great story, Yes but it needed a little longer. Graphically this games smashes the limit and really does look smooth but like others have said the A.I are stupid and really easy to kill but with many 'weapons' to choose, you can have a little time mashing enemies heads in or whatever you feel is entertaining. For £20 - 25 this game is top but if you paid full price, don't worry it is a very good game but lacks DLC? Maybe we will see some, who knows. As for this being a game to buy, do it but don't pay more than £25. Peace
Yes RAGE story sucked balls and the ending was one of the worst endings this generation. ID software should be ashamed of themselves. I traded this game luckily for $37 and only paid $45 for it.
Borderlands was the exact same way. Problem is people had fun playing it with friends, but failed to realize you can make bad games fun by playing with friends. Doesnt mean the game is now good. There was far too much wrong with RAGE and Borderlands to categorize them better than mediocre.
Started off really high on this game for the first few hours, but it then nose dived for me. Plays great, looks great outside of all the texture loading issues, but the game itself fell off a cliff into a pit of blandness right until it hit the bottom with the horrible ending. I had fun playing it, but it fell far short of my expectations and could have been so much more, given the five years of development.
In a game I almost always need something to push me trough the story....I haven't finished RE5 yet...
Meh. After playing Heavenly Sword and eventually throwing it out because of its suspect gameplay, I wholeheartedly disagree. Great gameplay can compensate for average story, but great story rarely ever compensates for average gameplay.
naw.. I still feel gameplay > everythin' else.. that's the reason I play games in the first place. That's not to say I don't appreciate a good story, cinematics, graphics etc. I do, but gameplay is most important to me.
I don't know, but I really enjoyed Rage. The story could have been more fleshed out, but it was in no way bad. The gunplay was fine, the enemy AI kept things interesting, as you had to keep on your toes whenever they came at you. I even enjoyed all the racing and vehicle take downs. It all ended abit prematurley (thats what she said - right?), but it was in no way a failure! I'd definately buy Rage 2.
