Isn't it partly chosen by the community as well? :S

EDIT: Life is unfair, so deal with it.

GOTY should be your own personal choice. When it comes to Award Shows, it's never going to be truly fair. Unless a game sweeps them all like Uncharted 2 or Mass Effect 2 did, it's going to be subjective to taste. A lot of awards will go to COD, when fans of Portal 2, Halo, Killzone, and Resistance will ask why. Titles like LA NOIRE, LittleBigPlanet 2, and DeadSpace 2 could get overlooked.

I think the best best is to make your own decisions on the games you love. And of course the only reason we watch VGAs is for the announcments.

All your favorite games will win a GOTY award!

Too many publications hand the award out so don't worry your GOTY will win an award from somebody!

I've played a ton of great games this year and if stranded on a island with an Internet connection and one game it would be......

I think its strange when people think there is some sort of one definitve Game of the Year award, like one publication whose opinions are definitive. Almost every gaming publication does thier own awards, some involving the community, some not. Take 2009 for example; three games won equal amounts of GotY awards - Uncharted 2, Batman Arkham Asylum and Demons Souls. None of those was the game of the 2009, but rather just certain peoples prefered titles of the year. This year I think will be even more diverse, with more genuinly great games than any other year I can remember since I started gaming in the 90's, in almost every genre too.
