Microsoft acquires VideoSurf, promises to bring better video search and discovery to Xbox Live

Terms of the deal aren't being disclosed, but Microsoft announced today that it has acquired the content analytics firm VideoSurf, and it's being crystal clear about where it will be putting it to use: Xbox Live. VideoSurf, for those not familiar, is a company that specializes in computer vision technology, which lets it "tag" individual frames of videos in real time and deliver better search and discovery services. Earlier this year, it released an Android application that basically amounts to Shazam for video. People are bitching about this acquisition. The very fact that they acquired this company is great for XBL. If people cannot see this...oh wait..they are trolling....

MS is making money and profits with their current business model for console gaming. So why would they go out and buy numerous game companies FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE IF THEY ARE MAKING PROFITS?

Remember THIS IS A BUSINESS first and foremost.
99% of members on this site seem to think the console business is a charity. Sony and MS and Nintendo are out to make money. They will do it in various ways. Different ways from each other...but their goal is to please investors and shareholders first and foremost.

Bolstering XBL for the future is a more lucrative business aspect at this point for MS then acquiring game studios when they are already making profits from the ones they have.

Hardcore gamers might hate this, but the average gamer does not see this at all....and the average gamer makes up most of console game sales.
This is a business...they cater to what makes them profits. Like it or hate it. That's how business is done.

Well said....Ms knows one of the keys to the 360 is xbox live. They keep improving on it every year which is ok by me.
It just keeps evolving and that's the reason that it will always be the better service.
