CCU: Chrono Trigger Review — God bless Square — They made Chrono Trigger

Armyman_22 contributor to Console ControllUs writes:
This game was re-released on PSN and is very similar to the PS1 version. If you loved the release on the PS1 then you should be at home playing this version of the game. I have heard lots of things regarding this game. I didn’t know as many people liked it as I have. To no end though, say what you might but to me I have yet to see an RPG put it together as this one has. Bar-none (including FF7 and FF10). Some might ask why would you give this game so much praise when games like Final Fantasy 3, 7, 10, Brave Fencer Musashi, Fable and others are out. Well ponder this when you play an RPG what do you hope to accomplish? You want to be put in a meaningful role and fulfill a worthwhile goal. That’s what this game does from beginning to end. Everytime I play this game I feel like I’m visiting some old friends. With that out the way let’s break it down.

The DS version is the definitive way to play. More content, and completely free of the nagging load times. Great game, terrible port job.

@knifefight
its like playing it in the original SNES, no loading in it.

CT was made by a dream team from the makers of FF, DQ and Xenoblade, it is the best ever JRPG till today.

it was my first RPG, i used to be just a platformer action and fighting game guy, but CT just pulled me in and i jumped with both feet.

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

LG_Fox_Brazil35d ago

That's a pretty fucking great list

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

I want a full on 3d remake but I suppose HD2D is fine.

Snookies1243d ago

So many people want HD2D, but I agree 100%. Chrono Trigger is in my top 3 of all-time. I want to see what this could be like re-imagined in full 3D. The sprites look good enough in the original, in my opinion. What would be amazing, is if they just went for both haha. Give us the HD2D to tide us over while they work on the full remake.

darthv7243d ago

I'd imagine it would be something like... chrono cross

goken43d ago

I am hoping a modern AAA return…

Chard43d ago (Edited 43d ago )

I'm still skeptical of HD-2D, and still want them to fix remaining foibles in the current Steam version. At any rate I've been seeing online that this rumour has been debunked

Knightofelemia42d ago

I would jump for a remake of Chrono Trigger then hopefully a remake of Chrono Cross. I wish Xenogears and the Xenosaga trilogy also got a remake or a remaster.

jznrpg42d ago

Yes to Xenogears and Xenosaga!

jznrpg42d ago

I am surprised it hasn’t been done already. It’s widely considered as one of the best RPGs all time. I’ll take it for sure. I want a Vagrant Story remake as well
