Sony Disputes Microsoft's Black Friday Sales Statement

Sony is disputing Microsoft's statement about the ratio of Xbox 360 to PS3 sales during the week of Black Friday. Here's what Kimberly Otzman, a Sony spokeswoman, said to Todd Bishop of seattlepi.com:

"It's (Sony Computer Entertainment America) policy not to disclose our unit sales numbers until NPD numbers are officially released which will be December 13th. However, I can assure you that Microsoft's estimates of our PS3 unit sales numbers are way off and they did not outsell PS3 2:1 during Black Friday week."

Most gamers dont have the money to buy 2 consoles or 3. If theirs fails then they feel like the had a big loss (Which is true) also its a retaliation thing. When a dog is cornered it will bite. No one wants a return of the Dreamcast scenario but.... Both consoles are so far a long at this point it wont happen imho.

People also love to argue and with the anonimity(Spelling?) that the internet brings its all too easy. People are very opinionated and will fight for it tooth and nail especially if they have no one to impress...

All in all they do in a way have stock in a system... Sooo... Hard to say more from my view. Things like the class action law suit against the 360 now is just bad news for all gamers. It is however a good time to be a gamer.

The reason it is bad for everyone is that it opens doors for lawsuits of all kinds against all platforms...

while I do agree with what you said, a REAL gamer will find a way to purchase at least 2 consoles if not all. I myself have find a way to own every system since the SNES. In my younger days I would save my allowence, now that am older and have a family of my own, I try to work like crazy so that I can afford to provide for my family and the guilty plessure of gaming. Why? because I am still to own a 360 and a Wii and I still want to build myself a kick-ass PC rig. Granted some people are in such deep hole that they can only afford 1 console, but those are the people who appericate the one system they own and are to busy enjoying it to even bother talking about the other systems. A real gamer by the book, loves the industry and accepts it for what it is.
Its an Industry where the big corps lie to you, but they make up for it by providing hours or somtimes minutes of entertainment in our lives. The faster people accept that fact and just enjoy the games the better the industry will become.

Yeah I'm only 25 so I had a limit to how many consoles I had as a youth but I did find friends who had Neo Geo and Sega CD and stuff. I myself had a SNES during that time but since PSone and N64 I have owned every console apart from some crap you can probably only get in the electric district of tokyo =P

Hey I really do try to stay unbiased here. It does pay off. Anyone who doesn't realize that all systems have potential is dead wrong and anyone with half a brain will tell you that. PS3 is hard to dev for hence we get delays and few exclusives but they are well worth it when people try. PSN is great too. Pain is fun.

360 has more games and can put them out on time. However where it exceeds against PS3 it lacks in Hardware. I see potential in both and hopefully everyone can. I remember the days where I would argue about sega and SNES for hours in school. You know what though... Its done and they were both good. In 7 years nobody will care about PS3 vs 360....

Still for those who are on a budget it still doesn't give you the right to knock others. You made the choice that best serves your gaming needs. Deal with it.

what i don't understand is that sony is critizing microsoft for their sale numbers for black friday saying that it's not true and they never release sony sales numbers to after dec 31,well why did sony say that their sales of the ps3 jumped around a 100% after black friday.
the truth is that this been going on for years and every company lie about one thing or another to try and sell their products,yes even sony,but what get me is how people act as if sony is better then everyone else and they never lie or have bad products.
when the ps1 and 2 first came out sony had all kinds of troubles with the drives on the systems and they had a high return rate but sony didn't do a damn thing about it.the reason why sony didn't do anything is because when all the problems was happing with the ps1 and 2 they didn't hardly have anyone on the internet at that time so microsoft fans couldn't get on line and lie about it to make it seem worse and people didn't talk about it in forums like they are now and the news didn't spread all over the world,so it didn't become well known.
when microsoft came out with the 360 the whole world was on the internet and sony fans lied to make the problem look worse then it was(i'll admit it was bad),and because of this the news spread all over the world and people was all over the internet talking about it.
if the internet was like it is now back then,sony would've had to do the same thing that microsoft done because their first 2 ps were crap,the newer versions were good but i'm talking about the first 2 years on the consoles life.i'm tired of hearing how it's just microsoft that had problems like this but if people want to admit it or not microsoft contracted the work for the pieces that's causing the 360 to heat up and microsoft is replacing the pieces that caused the system to overheat with a different piece that will solve the problems,i've read where some sony fanboys said that microsoft isn't fixing them they are just putting the same pieces back in and sending them off and hoping that they last to another 2 to 3 years to the warrinty wares off,well if they will use their brains they will see that it's cheaper to fix them then have them to keep coming back just to put the same pieces in again and on top of that it's aggainst the law to keep puting defected parts in any electronic products.

what i can't understand is how can americans hope that a company from japan wins and the one from the U.S looses.when 2 writers from 2 game magazines in japan were intervied and asked why the 360 just can't seem to sell well in japan with all the good games,they both said that the japanese people are proud of their country and companies in it,and they like to buy japanese products to support the japanese economy and they just refuse to buy forign products especially if it comes from the U.S.what i want to know is how can americans still want them to beat us in anything.

This is a victory for Microsoft. Their PR machine here is like a well oiled political campaign. No one ever votes for the candidate on the defensive. How will this appear:

Sony rep says, "Microsoft lied! They didn't sell twice as much as us, they only sold 1.85 times as much as us!"

Either way, it gets the point across. Microsoft outsold Sony. That's the whole point they're making. The more Sony belabors the point and tries to correct the 2:1 figrue, the more they just draw attention to the fact that they were outsold again. How could their public relations let statements like this fly out of the kitchen and perpetuate the whole issue? It's something Sony should want swept entirely under the rug.

The PS3 is not, or on its way to domnating the UK! I am no fanboy ok, i like both machines.. but the facts are that the 360 is wiping the floor of the PS3 here.. anyone who wants to find our.. just phone game, gamestation, hmv etc and they will tell you what console is selling the best.

I have mates whom work in all them stores and they tell me same story, time and time again.

The lack of any decent games for the PS3 at the moment is letting the machine down badly (which is a shame) and most people whom are buying it are getting it to play blu-ray movies, seeing as a dedicated player costs about twice as much as the PS3.

Please do some research before posting such comments.

Console sales are very important but Sony needs to convince Developers making games on the PS3 will be profitable for them.

Its the software sales Sony should be worried about the Wii has a bigger base than the 360's yet the 360's attach rate is greater.

Sony's grudge here is not how many Microsoft have sold, or how many people claim the PS3 has sold but simply Microsoft's statement that the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 to a 2:1 ratio which is incredible in its own right.

In response, Sony say this is not true but because they cannot release figures (due to their Policies), wait for the NPD numbers to see and you'll know Microsoft were not telling the truth.

We can't say anything more than that until those numbers come out.

the pork analogy was a great one. My statement about fear was in relation to MS mentioning sony in pretty much all of their key speeches over the last couple years and when your forever belittling your competitors then it smells like fear on their part.

To add to that you're right about it being business but I feel its not how the world is. You can promote yourself without downplaying the opposition. Its more common in the Americas than in Europe. Up until the last decade companies were not allowed to downplay other companies (in advertising UK and mainland Europe) I mean would you see BMW or Mercedes going at each other like MS and Apple, Linux, Sony etc. Sony rarely ever mentions MS . I used to work for gamestop a while back and i know from experience that just because something is sold out does not mean it in high demand. It all depends on how many they got in to begin with. If they only had 3 copies to begin with and they sell those three through the course of a day, that doesn't mean its a really hot item. It could well be in high demand but you cant tell that just cause something is sold out you have to look at all the factors.

Okay does globally NOT mean including the US or is the US no longer a member of the "GLOBAL FEDERATION". Also, the PS3 has had a nice push over the last couple of months, mainly in Europe. However the US sells have offset them and in most cases slightly tilted things back toward the 360. On top of that, the time period in question was early to late November, not "the last couple of months"

One last question for anyone who can answer it. Does the NPD numbers break thing down by the week. Because if they don't we will have no way of knowing what sold in the first three weeks vs the last week or any other week for that matter.

Microsoft have alot to lose on this one, I think more so than Sony. They shouldn't have come out with their 2:1 ratio because there is a big chance here that they were wrong on that, and even if it did outsell the PS3 but the figures were alot closer, someone is going to get burnt in the media and very well have their position in the company under question.

Making public statements about a rival company's sales figures to smear them makes you a very bold and VERY confident man. You do it only when you know you are right. Perhaps Microsoft felt the need to respond to Sony's well publicised claim of the 300% in sales.

I know Sony are claiming something themselves too, but they didn't PHONE up the media and give them an interview making an announcement about another company's hardware sales. They're acting in response, so if Microsoft are right, Sony will be dismissed with this claim and it'll probably be forgotten.

You bring up a good point about shipped vs sold, but usually when MS announces those numbers there more about what they shipped for the last quarter. I never have heard them say we shipped X amount last week, or even last month for that matter. That leads me to believe that for this week, what they are talking about is sold to consumers.

I don't think it is amazing that MS knows how much they sold last week. I think all companies know what they sold at any given time, and don't neccessarily have to wait for NPD. Sony knows how much they sold as well, or else they would have never claimed a 300% increase. How else can you claim a percentage increase if you don't know what the sales are?

The reason why NPD numbers are valid and why MS, Sony, and Nin subscribe to NPD is to find out what the other companies sold. Again all these companies know what they sold, they need data from NPD to find how they are doing against the competition. The reason why they trust NPD is because they must be pretty accurate. If NPD says MS you sold 100 consoles when MS knows they sold 200 consoles than MS won't be able to trust the data that NPD estimates for Sony and Nintendo. However since NPD's estimates are inline with what MS has, than MS knows they can trust the NPD estimates for Sony and Nintendo. Hope that made sense.

The fact of the matter is Microsoft's number is probably very accurate. However since NPD hasn't released data yet, I am not sure how they can claim 2 to 1 since NPD is typically who provides the competitor data. My guess is Microsoft knew how much Sony sold last Black Friday, and used Sony's own percentage release statement to come up with the 2 to 1 ratio.

As for waiting for NPD to clear this one up. I don't believe NPD breaks it up into weekly chunks. Just monthly data, so NPD might not actually resolve this dispute. Either way according to the last couple months of NPD reports, Xbox has been outselling the PS3 by more than 3 to 1. Why is the 2 to 1 claim so shocking, and why would Sony object? It sounds like they are reducing the ratio, which should be considered improvement

I guess what I was asking is why is it a big deal if MS outsold them 2 to 1. It's a better ratio for Sony than what NPD reported for Oct, Sept, and Aug. I guess I don't understand the stance Sony is taking. They obviously know their numbers, or else why would they claim a percentage increase? Why not just announce the sales total instead of a percentage? Is it because the overall total does not sound as impressive as the percentage increase?

Then Sony openly questions what another company announces yet they again choose not to release their own numbers to defend their statement. If they wanted to be credible they should have
came out and said it instead of waiting on NPD. Saying "let's just wait for NPD" is like all of us saying wait for NPD. The only reason why we say wait is because we don't know, however Sony does knows how much they sold.

If there statement was "we sold X amount of units, we don't know how much MS sold but we highly doubt it was as many units as MS claims so we will wait until NPD data is released to confirm whether or not MS is telling the truth or not" that would sound like a more confident statement. The fact that they don't want to announce actual numbers leads me to believe that they don't have the data to debunk Microsoft's claims or that they know MS is telling the truth and they are just trying to add doubt for the sake of it.

Remember that MS can get into a lot of legal trouble for lying to investors if there sales related press releases are far off than what actually happens. So if MS exaggerated their claims on units sold than investors can cry foul. To avoid legal trouble and investor discontent Microsoft's numbers for 360 units sold must be accurate, if Microsoft's estimate for Sony's sales aren't accurate it's because Sony communicated the wrong percentage increase to the public.

I went back and re-read the Microsoft sells information interview for the black friday week. Here is what the article said "Microsoft said that it outsold Sony's PlayStation 3 2 to 1 last week, according to retail estimates."

The numbers MS quoted was with them saying "According to retail ESTIMATES". So, why has that been ignored and people are out crying as if MS said that this was a SOLIDIFIED fact. I really think people read and hear what they want to hear, others don't even read the article and form their own opinion, they tend to go by the word of their buddies. and worked at Sony for decades as an engineer. Are you mad that he didn't work until the age of 90? By the way, technically both Sony and Microsoft have only had one price cut on their SKUs.

The 80GB was dropped once, the 60GB was dropped once, and the 40GB is the same. All three SKUs for the 360 were dropped once as well. They software sales are actually quite good; PS3 has the highest software attach ratio of any of the 3 consoles (annual, not cumulative), and hardware sales are shooting through the roof.

EDIT: Xgamer has trouble reading english. I said "Annual Software Attach Ratio." Right now, PS3 is at around 7.2 while Xbox 360 is at 6.5. Not a huge difference, but it does prove that PS3 owners, despite what the idiots proclaim, actually are buying games, and a lot of them.

There is obviously nothing propietary about this information... Information about Sony or microsoft sells can be access even by sites like VGChartz... How accurate the data is depends on how much data is collected by VGChartz, NPD, Sony sources, and Microsoft sources...

First of all for those of you that are so naive to believe that any multi-billion dollar companys like micro and sony dont know how many consoles they sold in any given week then you shouldn't even be discussing this news, and I'm not referring to them knowing how many they "shipped" to retail, they may not know the exact figure down to how many individual units sold but you're a fool if you dont think a billion dollar company doesn't have its own internal method of tracking/gathering sales data from retailers= estimates within 1000's of units sold, come on they may not be able to track sales from retailers and say we sold 310,897 last week, but they have enough smart people on the payroll who's only job is to tell them with a acceptable degree of accuracy that they sold between 30k to 35k or between 218k to 223k, or in this case between 305k to 310k, which these smart people will regularly get from analyzing 1000's of retailers sales data, I'll bet many of you already work for company's that have similiar means of tracking sales and its nowhere near as big as sony or micro, NPD is the official source for 2 main reasons, 1. Their whole business is based on tracking sales, therefore they employ and have the best resources to do this= very accurate and reliable/trusted 2. They are neutral so it carries more weight/creditability with the public= which is why other company's like pay them for official sales data.

Now with all this said, just a few closing points:

Micro is likely very close with how much they sold, they don't know how much sony sold though, but sony did announce there sales were up 300% from last black friday week, so basicly micro is saying that even with sonys 300% sales increase ps3 roughly sold 150 to 155k last week, and by saying they sold 310k that would in fact be a 2:1 sales margin.

Also remember either way this plays out NPD only give monthly sales, so it will still be somewhat ambigous whether or not the 2:1 ratio was actually correct or not, because even if micro comes up a little over or a little under, either side could still insist they were right about black friday sales week, because obviously the sales each week could have been much higher or lower for either console, in fact I would say ps3 sales might have outpace 360's a little the 1st week of Nov. with the price drop.

The thing I find most amusing of all is that sony could have simply "debunked" micro's claims by saying its NOT 2:1 for black friday week because according to OUR estimates we sold ___ ps3's last week. I mean forgive me if I just find it a weak arguement for a company to say "NO you're wrong, but just for the sake of company policy I won't tell you what OUR #'s actually are." -wtf? but either way then we would STILL be arguing about who's "estimates" are wrong, and we would never know because once again NPD is just going to give the monthly total. ha ha funny stuff. is when my buddy went to buy a ps3 (i was with him) there was 2 total ps3's and roughly 10 360's in the best buy. now i know that doesnt mean much, but i was surprised to hear the bestbuy empoyee say "your lucky you came in when you did, the ps3 has been selling quickly" im finally excited to see the NPD numbers, really i could care less who "WINS". but i guess deep down i am rooting for ps3, i own both btw.

Don't forget that a couple of months ago XBOX 360 was outselling PS3 as much as 5 - 1 in the United States. I was afraid the ending could be soon for PS3.

But now the 360 is outselling the PS3 around 2-1 in the united States but worldwide it's closer.

As long as PS3 can atleast keep it respectable this holiday, It always has a chance to get back into the race in 2008, 2009 and beyond.

I just played through a truly defining momment in Mass Effect. You have to make a choice between killing off the last of the rachni race (who were hunted to near extintion for a reason) or showing mercy and helping them recreate their species. Words cannot express how truly cinematic this portion of the game was. The camera angles and the superb graphics truly shine b3yond.

For me, when a game has you at the helm of such thought provoking impasses, it has reached further into the TRUE heart of gaming: the ability to captivate the player. So far, this game has earned my outstanding ovation. And now...suddenly

$60 bucks doesn't seem to be too much to ask for. When such a high calibur game such as this is what I managed to get away with, I consider it a steal more likely.

I find it highly unlikely that MS is being completely honest about those numbers. We all know that MS has been known to play around with numbers, and I wouldn't be surprised if they have done just that now. Even if it were true, it would be a double edged sword...think about it. The more 360's sold= the more customers who will experience a failed system. The larger your user base is, the more prolific the RROD problem becomes(Falcon chipsets are failing too, so the system is not apparently saved by 65nm). What this means is a rapidly growing demographic of disgruntled consumers, instead of a declining one. Eventually, this could cause the downfall of the console. Given this ideology, I am glad for the recent apparent sales claims by Microsoft.

Additionally, I'd like to add that the number of PS3's worldwide are more-less half of that of 360 worldwide. So we have PS3 only out for 1 year and set at a high price tag for a majority of that time...yet still it able to achieve 50% the sales of a console that's been out for two years. There is no disputing that PS3 has been keeping up with everything 360 has to throw at it, including Halo 3, and that the only difference in sales totals comes from MS releasing their console one year ahead. Of course MS's bubble will be burst when MGS4, GT, FFXIII, LBP, Haze, KZ2....(you get the picture) land on the console. For all those turkeys talking about the dumbed down 360 version of MGS4, keep in mind MGS4 (and the above mentioned titles) will expand the PS3 user base go greatly that PS3 will be eventually getting a so called "exclusive" ninja game of its own.

All Year (2007) the Xbox360 has outsold the PS3 in consoles and by more in software sales in North America. One of the reasons Microsoft ever launched the XBOX is because they realised their OS doesn't really have that much more to offer than others like Linux or Apple OSX. They needed to diversify, and gain a little more brand recognition in the process.
