Capcom and Ninja Theory take coward’s way out in DMC fiasco

SG - Devil May Cry is getting split into two universes: Capcom’s Devil May Cry nos. 1-4 Dante and new Dante, brought to us by the fine folks at Ninja Theory. The root of the decision is pretty obvious: Capcom and Ninja Theory don’t want to piss off hardcore Devil May Cry fans… or, piss them off more than they already have.

I wish people freaked out this much about Castlevania Lords of Shadow... But hey. You're complaining for good reason - good on ya.

Optical_Matrix2564d ago

Castlevania Lords of Shadow was an extremely well made game. The length and variety in the game is unmatched by a lot of action/hack and slash titles. Sure it borrowed from a lot of games, and wasn't traditional Castlevania, but a good game and a good game, and these niche fans of certain franchises need to learn that change is going to happen as it's what drives the industry forward in some cases.

Not saying I was too happy with the direction DmC is going, but at the same time, I'm trying to keep an open mind because if the game is good from its own merits, then it's good from its own merits.

NukaCola2563d ago

I agree with OpticalMatrix

Lords of Shadow is one of the best games this gen. The ending boss itself was weak visually and technically, but the other 99% of the game is outstanding. The epilogue scene made up for the mediocre ending fight. I thing it's one of the best looking and best paced action adventure titles to date. And a SP experience that's 20+ hours is something many games will never beable to do.

GavLam882563d ago

I still really do not understand those who classify LoS as a great game, let alone "one of the best games this gen". It is the first and only game I have purchased (due to the amount of praise) which I really did not enjoy in the slightest. I personally don't get it, but that is just my opinion.

On topic, Ninja Theory sound very indecisive and are just trying to please everyone which will ultimately lead to their failure. The fans clearly want a return to what made the series great i.e DmC 1 and 3. That is what I want to see...

The DmC universe has so much to offer that has not been explored yet, between DmC 3 and the original in terms of the timeline. Or even going as far back as Sparda...

SnakeCQC2563d ago (Edited 2563d ago )

Castlevania Lords of Shadow was my favourite game this gen! next to obviously assassins creed

egidem2563d ago

It depends on which Assassin's Creed you're talking about. The first one wasn't good. Too repetitive. Anything after the first one was good.

ShoryukenII2563d ago

I think the first one was great. It was repetitive but the quality of the gameplay and graphics was amazing. The way he touches everything he climbs, things that don't look climbable and how he touches everyone he pushes in the crowd. The detail and size of the cities and the atmosphere were all great. The missions were very repetitive though. It was almost like an MMO. Asssassin's Creed II improved on it immensely and is the reason why Assassin's Creed III is one of my most anticipated games.

SnakeCQC2563d ago

each one was a stepping stone in terms of gameplay and they did in my opinion improve greatly with each game but assassins creed is a game with an epic story and the way each one conveyed the story was FAR superior to most games out there.

P.s. Im shocked to see how many disagrees i got for my other comment

Karlnag32563d ago (Edited 2563d ago )

You're shocked?! I'm shocked that you're shocked! You should know by now that people don't like it when you stray from one of the various hive-minds fuelling this site's users.

But you've got to understand that Dante is a hugely popular character in a cult franchise. To change him from the awesome character he was into this creature that they've decided to force upon us is insulting and would no doubt upset longtime fans of the series.

As for gameplay, Optical_Matrix is right in that we will have to wait and see. However, it's been known for a while that the gameplay WILL BE IN 30fps and that's a huge huge change. DmC gameplay is all about super fast action and relied heavily on it being in 60fps. Being 30fps will significantly decrease the speed of the gameplay and speed is a huge essence of the gameplay.

And anyway, a change from 60fps to 30fps is a downgrade in my opinion. Not an improvement.

ShoryukenII2563d ago

I think Ninja Theory is very arrogant. They remind me of David Russel (I think that was his name). He was supposed to direct the Uncharted movie but tried to give Drake a fortune hunting family. The fans complained and he told them to screw off. This is what I feel Ninja Theory is doing. They are making something that isn't Devil May Cry and doing their best to piss off fans.

Lord_Sloth2563d ago (Edited 2563d ago )

I did but no1 listened. You should ckeck out the review I wrote for it on OtakuGambit.

NeloAnjelo2563d ago (Edited 2563d ago )

Castlevania: LOS? Are you crazy? The game had a good story, great gameplay, controlled well, looked amazing, and had very few issues. The characters all looked in place. There isn't a protagonist in the Castlevania series that anyone could identify with, as they were all different. I loved the last game.

With DMC, I cant see why they would change Dante. As soon as you think of DMC, he is the character that people see, even if they haven't played the game. Imagine a new face for Marcus Fenix, Solid Snake or Nathan Drake? Yes these games probably sell more, but we identify them with these characters. Should we forget that DMC 3 never happened? The best game in the series, with a young Dante... now he looks completely different. Anyways that's my two sents. Capcom and Ninja Theory are know for making dumb decisions when it comes to developing. A parallel universe Dante is just the cheaters way out. This way they can still develop another game with a white haired Dante, and keep the stories unrelated.

People are still gonna be pissed regardless of this action or not. You can't please everyone.

Tigerfist2563d ago (Edited 2563d ago )

"Ninja Theory knows a lot more about creating emotional and cogent stories than most people who play their games."

"Gamers should have faith that, even though Ninja Theory might change the rules a bit, they can still make a solid Devil May Cry game that fits snuggly and sensibly into the timeline."

In order to do that one would have to ignore the big pile of bullshit they have already delivered. In fact, one would have to ignore the whole plethora of contradictions, plot holes and other similiar rookie mistakes that Ninja Theory was making with this one.

"A prequel about the exploits of young Dante would be far better than the creation of a separate universe within the franchise."

Like Devil May Cry 3? That was their excuse for this game, not it's on a "separate universe". How about Sparda and Virgil? Dante after Devil May Cry 2? Or even the new storyline with Nero!

But it's the cowards way out alright. They should just terminate this whole project at once.

rdgneoz32563d ago

""Ninja Theory knows a lot more about creating emotional and cogent stories than most people who play their games."

LOL. "

NT did have a good story for Enslaved, its just that the gameplay sucked since it was basically button mash and the platforming did itself...

Knushwood Butt2563d ago

Enslaved's story was ripped from another source (Journey to the West), so zero credit should go to NT for it.

radphil2563d ago

"NT did have a good story for Enslaved"

It wasn't original. It was taken from Journey to the West.

rdgneoz32563d ago

I never said it was an original story, but it was done well and wasn't crap (story wise) like other games these days.

Bimkoblerutso2563d ago

Ran is based on King Lear
The Matrix stole from the Invisibles
Bioshock is based on Atlas Shrugged
God of War draws from...all of Greek Mythology

Influences and homage are very different things from stealing. Aside from a very liberal interpretation of the original structure, the setting and story are very much a product of Ninja Theory.

radphil2562d ago (Edited 2562d ago )

What you just used as your example was lore and concept, not story.

The only 'change' they did to the story was put a sci-fi spin on top of it, and not only that, but the ending killed what was potential in the game itself.

@rdgneoz I'm just stating they don't deserve 100% credit on that area.

On a side note, it's also apparent that someone on N4G is just account vote duping, hence the mass lines of disagrees out of the blue on a huge chunk of the comments.

Bimkoblerutso2562d ago

Lore and concept is exactly what Ninja Theory took from "Journey to the West." Aside from lore and concept the similarities between the two stories are superficial at best.

radphil2562d ago (Edited 2562d ago )

How is it superficial, the name even gives it away:

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

morgle2563d ago

Why can't they just turn his hair white at the end?? After some kind special circumstance relating to the villain?

That'd be cool....

NeloAnjelo2563d ago

That would be good, but there is the whole stoey element from the trailers... like he is in a mental asylum? I mean come on. In Dante's world demons are accepted, since he had an actual "Devil May Cry" demon hunter store. Or something liek that.

I think they will try to make him "fit in" with the times now. This is a big mistake IMO.

Alos882563d ago

If they can't give gamers the game they want to play, they'll just tell them what they want to hear instead.
