50 New Nintendo IPs Since Year 2000

Gamers believe that when it comes to software, Nintendo always "milks" their franchises and don't create anything new. Well - heres a list of games that say different.

All I can see are 1-off attemps that got scrapped right after release. Where are they now? In the trash bins somewhere in their backyard! With the Wii, they just gave up on everything and decided to bank on Mario & friends instead.

And this means what, exactly? Many of those games are one-offs (a shame, in the case of something like Eternal Darkness) or all but shovelware.

Splitting up the Mario-inspired games as "new IPs" is pretty sad, too. It's Mario in another genre. It's all part of the same franchise that started 400 years ago, whether it's Wario, Luigi, an RPG, or Donkey Kong.

And some, like Excitebots and Advance Wars, aren't new IPs at all.

So, what was the point of this, again?

Saying that most of these games were just "one offs" kinda negates the point.
If Nintendo were to make 10 games under each of those franchises then people would still be complaining they just keep making the same games over and over again.

And just because the characters are the same doesn't mean it isnt a new IP. If it's actually a different game (as in the gameplay in the game isn't that which has been used before in one of their titles) then it is new, regardless of the characters involved, for example:

Wario Ware was a new IP, but Wario came from the Mario franchise. If you changed Wario into a character named Terry, you wouldnt go - "oh its just another Mario game" because it isn't. It just happens to have a Mario character in it, which I assume helped with sales. I don't think a game called Terry Ware would sell as well.

The point in saying they're one-offs is that many of them had the chance to become good or even great franchises. Note that I said "a shame, in the case of something like Eternal Darkness." I don't play survival horror type games, but even I acknowledge that was as standout title. Other games that didn't even get mentioned would be titles like Fragile Dreams, Trace Memories, Hotel Dusk, and The World Ends With You. Granted, they're DS-only titles, but all definitively new IPs that should have been mentioned before the Wii Sports, Play, or Fit titles.

I don't count spinoffs as new IPs. Exclusives, yes, but would Shadow the Hedgehog be a new IP because it's not Sonic, even using the same or very similar mechanics? Yes, the Wario Ware titles are vastly different from your typical Mario games, but they're still under the Mario umbrella. They are still Mario games, just as much as Super Mario Galaxy (and that game isn't on the list, despite being as different from the base franchise as Mario RPG).

The thing with the Shadow the Hedgehog example though, is that if you changed Shadow into a man running around, people could still make the comparision between that game and sonic because the gameplay style isnt too much different.

Man i loved Advance wars and Golden sun on the GBA.

The thing is if Nintendo treat some of these ip's like their main IP's then it would be better. You won't hear of Sony not releasing a game in another region the way Nintendo did with Xenoblade and co.

@Hicken: The point is that it's an unfair accusation to say Nintendo has featured NO new IPs at all in the last decade or so. True, most of those haven't been continued outside of the top tier of games, so it may be little consolation. But, at least Nintendo has tried to add some new IPs.

Also, there are only two "Mario-inspired" games on the list. And calling Mario VS DK the same franchise as Super Mario Bros. is wrong. One is a strategy game and one is a sidescrolling platformer. New gameplay means new series with familiar faces.

You do realize that Microsoft ONLY has new IPs. They only joined the gaming industry with the Xbox. Nintendo and Microsoft can't be compared. Nintendo can be blamed for relying on franchises they created in the 8-bit and 16-bit generation and doing nothing new. Microsoft can't be entered into such a debate because of their relative newcomer status. Any franchise they make is automatically a NEW Microsoft franchise because there's no such thing as an OLD Microsoft franchise.

No, you are wrong.

A NEW IP is something NEW. Not just on a console, but on any console. So therefore you cannot count any game as a new IP on a MS console.

besides, you have completely missed the point of my post, which was to point out that MS being new to the console wars has probably got near 50 new IP's and Sony has a ton load more than 50. Either Way, Nintendo was lame this generation.

And this list doesnt include all the games you listed that while aren't made by sony have only ever been on sony systems(Infamous,LBP,Jax,Rache t,etc.)
