The next Xbox: What Epic wants

OXM UK: "Our week-long look at what developers want from the next generation of Xbox continues with a word or two from Epic Games, fresh from the launch of Gears of War 3."

The story is too old to be commented.

Considering the issues that have come up this gen in relation to graphics, how the need for high end levels greatly effected gameplay, that people seem eager to rush into next gen.

@dirigiblebill:
The PS2 *still* sells worldwide and is well over 150 million.

Meanwhile - not making a fanboy dig - the Xbox1 and Gamecube, who their supporters swore up and down were the better gaming machines with better graphics, only sold around 30 million each and were dumped as soon as the Wii and Xbox 360 hit the market.

That, along with all the visible/notable issues faced/caused this gen because of the over prioritization of graphics, should tell people something.

I'm hoping Microsoft, Sony and co will keep their old consoles in service alongside the new ones.

fluffydelusions3185d ago

Well Sony will for sure. They have a history of doing so. I mean look PSV is coming out but they are still putting out new models of PSP. MS I'm not so sure about. PC wise they support their system nicely but consoles/phones are a different story. I remember that phone lineup they had out for only a couple of months and then killed it after it wasn't doing so well.

Personally i welcome more powerful machines....the sooner we get to the point more power wouldn't add much to the graphics the sooner we will be forced to exit the phase where graphics are emphasised.

It won't hurt when every game looks so great because then to stand out you'll need something else. Certainly the silicon barrier is approaching quickly and the advancement of computer performance for games will probably slow to a comparitive crawl at least temporarily for several years.

We are maybe ten years away from said barrier. The next machines could be the penultimate step towards the end of console generation cycling.

This is the longest collective console gen ever, and you think people are rushing into it over graphics? I don't see what you mean there. My move into next gen is dictated by console makers. And they are not rushing anything.

Godmars2903185d ago

This is also a gen that's seen games with ridiculously development times for games, with very few that pay off and where graphics were the key issue.

SITH3185d ago (Edited 3185d ago )

I fail to see your point. Nothing about development times is going to change and the pay off is the developers problem not mine. They should make better games, and next gen could potentially give them the tools to do so. It is up to them to learn how to use those tools. And nothing about that will stop me wanting to move to the next gen.

damnyouretall3185d ago (Edited 3185d ago )

no need to rush i guess. look at all the kick ass games coming out in the next few weeks. next year will have some gems as well. i think we are hitting the final peak of quality this year and some next year.the new consoles will be out 2013 for sure, cause i think i can deal with one more year of halo4, ME3, rainbow6, ghost recon, hitman, agent, gta5, the last guardian, blah blah blah. if not 2013 then i think id be a little pissed

SOC (System on Chip) day 1 (instead of slim model 3 years later!

32nm process with a 4 core 3Ghz CPU being piggy backed by a DX11 GPU = to a GTX460 or HD5850.
1 Gb GDDR5 Vram and 512Mb system ram.
This will Guarantee 1080p Gaming with 4xMSAA 8xAF!
500GB 3.5" removable Standard HDD. No need to rape gamers with "special" over priced M$ HDD! Also this would allow gamers to connect a 1TB HDD or connect a USB 3.0 HDD

All games require install (to cut down on load times)

Removable, cleanable dust covers and better cooling to prevent console death from heat and dust!

Native KB/M support!
Flash drive support 3.0 support
Droid or Windows 8 O.S. support (to play your phone games and run Phone apps on I guess)

At this point M$ could just use PC DVD rom since all games would require an install therefore the games would be compressed on disk and unzipped to HDD so no crying about Final Fantasy 29 being on 5 disc. and M$ would not have to use Blu-ray.

the specs you listed are FAR too weak that won't be able to run Samaritan tech demo or even BF3 pc max settings visuals visuals and the ream is WAY too small next gen consoles need at least 8gb ram(ram is dirt cheap now so is very possible) . those aren't even 2011 high end pc specs and you think a console launching with these specs in 2013 will be enough ? LOL you don't know what you're talking about

Jam_sponge3185d ago

I can't say I want more Twitter in games. The "-log" stuff EA's doing works fine, no need to involve a non-gaming brand.

AngelicIceDiamond3185d ago

The next gen is coming. Epic, Crytek, Activision, hopefully EA, are probably developing some kind of new next gen early concepts of sorts. heres hoping E3 of 2012.

Kahvipannu3184d ago

I believe so too, for example Dice have already stated they made Frostbite2.0 next-gen consoles in mind, so that it won't be pain in the ass to transfer it forward.

Next E3 will have new hardware announcement from MS, maybe Sony too, there's now way that won't happen.

AngelicIceDiamond3184d ago

Yeah seriously its time to play Crysis, Battlefield, SkyRim how they're meant to be looked and played Ultra next gen remakes lol.

playaplayer3185d ago (Edited 3185d ago )

I think sony and microsoft is waiting for 22nm processors. At 22nm next gen consoles will have 16 times more processing power than current gen consoles.

Tyre3185d ago

What's new? Same old predictions....really not so interesting article. Let it be 22nm processors for the next gen, that's all.
