RAGE Review - NGN

New Game Network: "The market seems to be saturated with post-apocalyptic shooters these days, and only the prominent name of iD software was able to garner much hype surrounding the release of RAGE. Amazingly, the legendary developers have managed to carve out their own unique nook in the world of post apocalyptic shooters, and this can only be attributed to the fractured nature of the game. RAGE almost feels like two games glued together; a fast-paced and linear corridor shooter with great atmosphere, gunplay and enemy AI, and a bloated, tedious open world racing game that plays like a pointless MMO. These two separate entities have been patched together in RAGE, and the result is an experience that has as much inconsistency as it has character. "

Don't come into this game expecting too much from its open world or RPG elements. Youll be dissapointed.

Its a shooter

NukaCola2927d ago

I kind of got that. It's just an open world with limited stuff to do except for driving from one check point to the nest and corridor shooting until you kill everyone. Sad cause this game looked great. I guess I can't care really cause tomorrow(12am tonight) is BBBBBAAAAATTTTMMMMAAAANNNN!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is exactly the way Carmack and anyone from id described this game as being. This isn't word for word but I believe more then one time they strongly stated that "It has open world and RPG elements but RAGE is first and foremost a FPS"

Ouch. I wasn't interested when it was first announced but I didn't think it'd score this low.

Exactly what I was thinking.

At the same time though, as much as I appreciate ID's games i've not really taken to anything they have released since Quake 2/3.

I think people are a bit harsh on this game. I personaly think the game was fun to play. Not up the with the likes of uncharted,Gears,Batman ark..e.t.c but its defo not as bad as people say it is.

People aren't necessarily saying its bad, they also aren't saying its great either. Its basically decent. The game suffered from massive overhyping when it could not like up to it. I'm playing the game right now, and i'm 6 hours in and its starting to get boring. Plus the constant texture pop-in is really getting on my nerves

Its not horrific but given the amount of praise the game was getting during E3 I believe that contributed to its demise in ratings. It's a very simple FPS essentially and I think that for a lot of people they felt it was a step back rather than forward in terms of gameplay. Visually RAGE looks good but looks aren't always everything. I liked it but not enough to hold on to it. I traded it in after I beat it.

There is lots of talk of a sequel being an actual open world game. I think that would be great. I think the racing was just a gimmick and didn't spend much time on it. I hope they replace that with a TDM mode if they do a sequel.

Don't count id out yet though...Doom 4 is on it's way and it sounds like it may be a nice piece of redemption for id.

Rage is easily one of the best games I've played in the last years. Shooting feels like the second coming

On PC of course

I'm with you! It's strange because I'm not a huge fps fan but I'm really enjoying rage, plus it runs great on my pc with triple monitors :)
