The online pass for Uncharted 3 multiplayer is there because “games have to make money” and server costs aren’t cheap: Naughty Dog explain where your funds are going.
“We have to pay for servers and all this different stuff to maintain it, and so at some point, you know, games have to make money.” So all those thousands of pc games over the years that never charged for online (and still dont) must have been bleeding money :/ I like ND but please don't spout BS, server costs aren't as expensive as they lead you to believe.
I can't wait until they say that for a Xbox360 game. They'll probably come up with some other bs, since we are technically already paying for that, although I doubt the money goes to there.
Uncharted 2 has sold 4.9 million copies. While the first 3 Crash games (developed by ND as well) sold close to 15 million units. And the Jak series has sold nearly 8 million copies. (None of these sales include 2nd hand sales) Yeah Naughty Dog are really living on the breadline, and can totally justify an online pass. /sarc
Unless you're planning on buying Uncharted 3 USED, then you don't have to worry about this one-time fee/pass. Besides, like most people, I'm buying this new. So no worries about paying for anything for me. At least they're NOT charging subscription payments to play online, cause that'd be ridiculous, right? lol It's online play is STILL FREE.
@NathanExplosion “We have to pay for servers and all this different stuff to maintain it, and so at some point, you know, games have to make money.” I'm not bitching, I just pointing out that ND have made a lot of money over the year from the games that they have developed (and deservedly so), while they have a small team of 90 at the studio, which means that they have less overheads than most other AAA studios. They are trying to justify Online Passes as though they aren't scraping even, and the Online pass is the only source of income keeping the studio afloat. They should just call a spade a spade, and say we would like a slice of that 2nd hand pie, so that we can line our baby-seal fur slippers with gold, and encrust our PS3's in sapphires. But at the end of the day, it is only for online content, and at least they aren't butchering the single player, with online pass DLC. But Rocksteady, are taking the piss with their online pass for offline content. I have mates who don't have access to reliable broadband services in their area, and can only play games offline. One of them had Batman AC pre-ordered but cancelled it because he was going to miss out on %10 of the games main storyline, so what was the point in buying it new? And I'm sure there is thousands more gamers in his same position.
What else do you want them to say? It's a business. Naughty Dog didn't decide on this, it was Sony, the publisher. Online passes are something more publishers are/will be starting to do which applies(in most part) only to used games. ____ I do agree that doing it for offline content, like in Batman:AC is completely stupid.
@NathanExplosion: I'm not so much complaining about Naughty Dog, but more so, about their excuses justifying the implementation of Online Passes. Instead of twisting the truth to us, essentially saying that the game will not be profitable without Online Passes. Why not just say it was a publisher's decision & out of the studio's hands. I will be buying Uncharted 3 new regardless. But I still don't like these lame excuses.
It's not only people planning on buying Uncharted 3 USED who have problems with the system, it's also people who plan to sell it at some point so that they have the money to buy new games in the future. Used games with online passes just sell for less.
jony No you ARE bitching. Naughty Dog has made money no doubt, cause they make quality products. Do you not think that there games are worth the full price? Dark overlord Why don't you enlighten us on your wisdom on how much it cost to maintain game servers. Fact is you are not paying more than the normal price for the game so what is the issue? Besides no one is forcing you to buy any game with online pass. Just stay playing the pc if you have a problem with it.
@nycredude You do realise sony use ps3's as their servers? you know the consoles they manufacture by the thousands everyday, so rather than rent or buy server farms, they created their own for next to nothing an example is the warhawk servers http://farm2.static.flickr.... Hell even I could turn my ps3 into a server if Sony still allowed Linux installs
@jony_dols why would ur friend cancel his pre order of batman arkham city when he was goign 2 get the game anyway? that's just stupid!
This is a bit off topic but I have to ask since I don't use XBL even though I have an Xbox (yes, shame on me fine, moving on...) Will 360 owners also pay for Online Passes for titles like BF3? Or is it only limited to SONY because we get free PSN? I mean 360 users pay for XBl right? Does that provide them with some sort of blanket and save them from paying for OPs?
there is an online pass on xbox for games like BF3/Batman AC and other games
Remember most of us pay for XBL just for CGC/Party chat function, seeing that 90% of the games on XBL are just P2P. which I think is just plain selfish. Being a South African Xbox Live user we dont have SKY news or ESPN to justify for what we are actually paying for, which is a damn shame.
The differences is you'd have a hard time finding servers actually run by the game companies, almost all of them are 3rd party hosts. Consoles on the other hand are all run by those who made it.
Exactly. If you're going to make us get online passes at least have the decency to have dedicated servers.
The matter of fact is, online play on PS3 is and will be free. Buy the game new, simple as that.
"So all those thousands of pc games over the years that never charged for online (and still dont) must have been bleeding money" You tend to forget the PC online tend to rely on 3rd party servers, usually private owned if you want to play a game online, whether it's Gamespy, EA, you may have public servers but it's the private ones that keep it going and these serves NEEDS donations to stay afloat, and because the community is so supportive of the servers, they would happily pay-to-play. Of course you also fail to consider that the library of online gaming gets higher and higher. I mean what about the servers for every online game on EA? Do you think they would happily pay for that bandwidth knowing that there's no traffic? Tell you what, Demon's Souls US servers are shutting down. I know right? What dickheads? How dare Atlus treat us this way for supporting them. I mean, what are they gonna do to keep it afloat? AN ONLINE... PASS? Please God no, NOT THAT? Sheesh..
Then why not move to a business model where they LET people hire servers, much like on the PC? Of course, this will be along with the official servers, but we can keep our servers afloat all we wanted. But I forgot, UC3 servers are just client indexing servers where game clients meet and are portioned to lobbies (nothing more than a glorified IRC server), the games are actually Peer2Peer. Keeping those online is should have been even simpler.
"Then why not move to a business model where they LET people hire servers, much like on the PC?" Problem is, they would have to directly connect to the XBL/PSN in order to do that. These accounts are tied with credit card/presonal information, whereas gamespy and other 3rd party services only utilizes any standard username account. Remember, you have to sign up "individully' for these services and this would only put XBL/PSN users into even more inconvenient situation. Need I remind you about the MGS4 Konami ID fiasco?
@Dark_Overlord That's what I was talking about yesterday, All of Sony's first party devs spin everything in favour of the Sony and the PS3.
Wherever the money goes it doesn't matter..I mean they HAVE to make a profit out of every game that hit shelfs...its not fair for them if people decide to buy pre-owned games...pre-owned games is like piracy to them in the fact being that they see nothing made from that purchase. Don't really know why ppl whine about having the online pass..
They're not charging for online. You pay nothing extra when you buy the normal way, which is new. Some abberrant people like buying used to save 5 little dollars. You only pay once for buying used if u wanna go online.
PC games survive with item malls and microtransactions. That's how they keep the online free. Naughty Dog wants Uncharted 3 servers to be smooth and lag-free. That costs money. If you buy the Uncharted 2 used then you're playing on their servers for free, online passes still aren't enough to cover all the costs but they help a bit.
Uncharted 3 isn't using dedicated servers, its switching to peer2peer
Elite Memberships, VIP passes, Online passes. The average gamer in xbox and ps3 are teens living at home with mom and dad and College kids or the ones of the same age. Yes 30- on up do play but they don't make up the majority of the number of games sold. Point is ive finished college and im still not making that much money and gaming has turned into a vibrent and ingauging industry that if allowed greed will destroy. Maybe not next year, or even 5 years from now. but that idea that i have a right to make as much profit as i can and to hell with the rest of america that is doing crappy like ohh idk the people you want to fork out $60 a game and hey just give us a lil more for this and this and this and this and this. STOP RAPING MY MONEY!!!
WE DO NOT need PC trolls! just freakin enjoy the game! its not like ur buying the game used! also why dont' u go make ur own game and pay for the servers huh? thought so. Also how about the AC and ventilation? how about the electric bills? also these PS3s are modified! because a normal PC or PS3 isnt powerful enough to support 3 million plus ppl!
So i'm a pc troll just because I refuse to buy into ND's BS? Its funny how when someone disagrees with you you're automatically labelled a troll. I never said I wouldn't enjoy the game, hell I never said I wouldn't buy the game. What I am saying is that I'm sick to death of these devs blatantly lying to their fanbase.
i will support ND forever as long as they keep bring incredible games like uncharted games
people pay for xbox live and to be honest its not a much better service then pc or ps3 by rights u should get all your dlc free no ads and also dedicated servers online on every game Make xbox free and have it with ads pay and no ads
not sure about this game i loved u1 and u2 but the beta felt ruined the gmeplay was far from the fluidity i came to expect from the previous games but maybe hopefully they fixed it for the final release
UC3 online pass does not bother me because I am buying this game day 1 brand new. ND has never let me down and thus their titles are worth $60 to me.
Well...when Naughty Dog says it it does seems to kinda make sense.
Not a big deal to me since UC3 will 80% campaign and 20% online durability for me.
Invalid, because I'll buy it on day one..
Wow they used naughty dog the most loved company to explain the most hated device in gaming online passes im a huge fan of naughty dog made it to level 50 on uncharted 2 mp but i won't let my fanboy blind me to bullshit
I have to agree online passes for any game are bullshit :(.
Buy the game new(as the huge fan you are) and you won't have to pay the one-time fee.
oh sir i never said i wasn't buying day one i just said i wont be fed corporate gumbo and told its prime rib i support naughty dog i just dont support online passes because its going to hurt the gaming community in the long run
Maybe we dont want a damn pass anyway..theyre not right are a pain in the ass.
This is NOT about buying new or second hand, this way, the online will die quicker, which is what those corporations actually want, but this will hurt them in the long run. If I buy the game 6 months later, and only a thousand people are playing online, it will hurt ME, even if I bought the game new, not second hand. If they want us to play the game online only for a few months, then so be it, this will hurt THEM in the long run (along with us).
Already paid in full, along with baton and battlefield. I wanted to play these 3 games and im not about to let online passes stop me from purchasing and playing these great games.
So a couple million at $60 a pop isn't enough money?! Wonder how the pc world makes it happen?
Sony pays Naughty Dog to make the game, BUT the publisher and retailer get most of that $60.
What? The retailer doesn't get most of the money when it's sold new.. They get like a dollar and change a little more when they put up signs and stuff. The devs get paid by Sony and devs also get royalties. Sony gets most of the money and that's how devs get paid. Have you even calculated what 60x 2 milliom is? You know the first 1 or 2million are going to be new buys when the game launches.
wait...so you want to buy the game used at a lower price and get away with "ND already took enough money so i can pay only the retailer and have all the in-game features"... so what about ppl who bought it new? are we stupid? online-pass is a good thing, it prevents ppl to buy second-hand games while not over-charging ppl who buy it new.
PC gamers have been paying for drm online passes since before the ps1 days even. What do you think those serial keys and license keys are?
Uncharted is not even a game with online priority. The majority of the audience is in for the single player game. By introducing this pass (for a peer 2 peer handled game, at that), the online numbers will shrink MUCH faster than ever, which is even bad for people who would want to buy NEW, especially at a later stage.
Paying for online passes only apply to those who buy the game used, not new.
I know, and I haven't said otherwise. What I'm saying is: less people will play it online eventually, so the numbers will fall quicker, and it will be worse for late-new buyers of the game, even. All this for a P2P online game with much less server cost.
with this online pass thing its ganna be ruff to sell used games cos if a game costs £20 + £10 for online pass then thats £30 better to buy it new. but uncharted 3, man thats something you dont wanna miss out on am buying it new day 1.
This was all MEANT to make it rough on the used game market. This online pass stuff is basically a way to devalue the used game sales
Only people that should be complaining about Online Passes. Are tha ones that dont buy there games new.If you buy your games new just STFU because this dont hurt you at all.

Stupid excuse, server costs are covered by initial purchase, when someone sells the game he is not playing it any more. There is no extra strain on servers, user count remains the same. Not to mention that Uncharted 3 is not using dedicated servers. Gaming industry business model is failing and instead of changing the model they are trying to milk existing consumers as much as they can...and they make stupid excuses along the way
so what's M$ excuse for make you pay for the xbl and also you have to pay for the online pass when you buy a 2nd hand game ?? atleast the online on ps3 is free
For the haters, Stop moaning we know every TRUE Uncharted fan will buy this brand new regardless of the online pass, I dont see why this is such a big deal. At least this isn't like Gears of War 3 where you need to pay an extra 1200MSP to unlock DLC that is already on the disc now is it?
For the supporters Why do you guys support this yet bitch about xbl. Passes are bs simple as that. We have a right to wait for. Price Drop. Dont let buisnessess ass rape your wallet and just say ok.
you have the right to wait for price drop...and ND will never complain about that! Online passes are only affecting USED games!! There wont be any increase in price if you buy it new...even after a price drop.
previously stated by Hesido: "Uncharted is not even a game with online priority. The majority of the audience is in for the single player game. By introducing this pass (for a peer 2 peer handled game, at that), the online numbers will shrink MUCH faster than ever, which is even bad for people who would want to buy NEW, especially at a later stage." Just as Hesido explained, if you look in hind sight it will shrink the online user base (which is likely waht the publishers want to lessen costs of p2p and partial servers) to the point that even is someone bought UC3 new a year later (or even day 1 buyers that play a year later)they would lose out due to limited amount of ppl playing the online due to the online pass. Basically in the long run it will not just hurt used buyers but new buyers as well.
bitching about game passes? Honestly, you all sound like a bunch of spoiler brats. It's already been proven that the developers don't make money from used game sales. Why should they have to settle? I understand the irritation about online passes but in the end, it's still a business and they want to make money. Besides, if you buy the game brand new or wait until it drops in price from time or deals, you can still play the game fully without having to pay for the online. Stop complaining.
For Uncharted 3, this is a bad decision. People aren't buying it for the online, but those who do play online will be badly affected by less people trying the online out. The player count, if we can keep track of it, will make a nose-dive after people begin to sell their copies cheaper to those people who might otherwise try the online but won't, due to the online pass barrier.
agreed, however, this online pass is for multiplayer only. which is all good and well so no complaints here. this should give people incentive to buy the game new. but have you seen the online pass for Batman? a freaking online pass for single player. that is just ridiculous. now anyone who has no online <my ps3 isnt connected to the net> cannot complete that game 100% coz 10% is locked out with an online pass. whats next? and online pass for mario? every 10 tubes il have to enter in an online pass to carry on? paying to play single player content thats already on the disc is daylight robbery any which way u look it.
Online Pass? Oh Dear, Now watch as the fanboys express their double standards because its naughty dog this time around and not activision or EA. THe value of this title has just dropped significantly, making me waste my time to enter a code to play the game I just handed over £40 for. Its just going to hurt them in the long run because devs and publishers dont realise it but used games actually help them in the long run. This is just a short term cash in and inconvieniance. Also a SP game that lasts in the region of 10 hours is NOT worth FULL retail price, its a SP only game to me because im of the opinion uncharteds mechanics just dont work in a MP format.
i agree , some people here are making exception and that's a fanboy move , it's stupid , it's more stealing , the price of the games are already high and now they are taking more money from people...
the price of new games is the same as before..however if you want to buy used games and play online you'll have to spend another 10 dollars. that's not wrong considering the developer's point of view!
"used games actually help them (developers) in the long run" LOL I'd like to know the logic behind your statement...
...fanbase HALO 1 Grand Theft Auto 3 Uncharted 1 Gears 1 GOW 1 Splinter Cell Rainbow Six Vegas etc. They all were launched into a higher level of public domain, especially Halo, specially due to the used game sells. Its like cars, how many exactly buy new or used. Homes buyers are somewhat similar in that regard too. Used sells DO HELP the maker.
Every used game was bought new at one time. The Dev's see their money off top, if any one takes a loss it's the consumer who bought it new who sells it at a cheaper price later, even more cheaper since the online pass. Now since the consumer sold his copy he can't play the can't play the game or its online features, Only the one with the copy can play. So it's nothing like piracy, because with piracy multiple people can play the same copy instead of one person. In the long run DLC & Online Passes is only going to hurt the Gaming Industry. Because of..... 1.) Rentals.... Most if not all the Top games(COD, Halo ect.) when they first came out most people rented, because they didn't know that much about the new game. So video stores had multiple copies of these games(which were bought new mind you). BlockBuster had over 60 copies of Halo 3 x how many BB stores they were in the world. So who is going to rent a game & then turn around a pay for an online pass?? So no more renting which means less players. 2.) Ghost Lobbies... Some of, if not most of the people in multiplayer lobbies have used copies or renting. So the chances of a ghost lobby just went up. So when you by a new game and their is not that many people on. Your going to feel like you wasted money. So you either sell the game or keep it and take a loss. The Dev's want you to take the loss and blindly buy their next game. 3.) DLC.. Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 a better game for cheaper price than MvC3..... Nuff Said!!
