PS3 Rock Band USB Hubless

Along with the news that Rock Band has shipped to retail, Harmonix and MTV Games also revealed today that the PlayStation 3 version of the bundle does not include a USB hub. That's all well and good for most PS3 players, as the majority of SKUs boast four USB ports.

But the recently released 40GB model only offers two USB ports. That means, out of the box, these players won't be able to jam with all of Rock Band's instruments.

radio shack has a generic usb2.0 hub for like 5.99...its not powered (not sure if that will matter or not yet)...but even powered hubs are like $10 for the most part...

still sucks though...why are they not including a hub like the 360 version...and is it rockband or GH3 were only the PS3 has the wireless guitar?...

Adamalicious5992d ago

It's Rock Band where the PS3 guitar is wireless but the 360 guitar is wired.

Also, I'm pretty sure if you have a 40 gig PS3 you'll need a powered USB hub or possibly one that eats both of your 2 ports and gives you 4. I would think that would provide enough voltage, but I could be wrong. Powered is the safe way to go.

They aren't including it because at this point most PS3 owners don't need it. It would cost them a few bucks for every unit shipped, and it doesn't make a lot of sense for them to cut into their, what I'm sure are rather slim, margins for such a small percentage of owners. It is a bummer for 40 gig owners though, but it's a small bummer.

pwnsause5992d ago (Edited 5992d ago )

40gb owners didnt get shafted, the PS3 is open platform, so you can use anything on it, go to an electronics store and get a cheap USB hub, and your good.

Boink5992d ago

and that's not the point. it's a minor irrtant, but yet another minor irritant.

imagine you're the guy who has been waiting for a ps3, cause you're a big sony fan, it finally gets to be a price you're poor ass can afford. You rush out, buy it @ 399$, then someone gets you rock band for xmas, you grab your buddies or family, get ready to rock, and realize you now need to run to radioshack to buy a cheap 10$ device to have fun. are you a happy customer?

annoying, and not an unlikely scenario. It's the HDMI cable all over again, why could nobody throw in a device that would cost them an extra 5-10$ in order to save the customer much annoyance.

and yes I know at least the ps3 version has wireless options and the 360 does not(as of yet anyway). that's not what this articel is about, and yes i'm annoyed at that too BTW.

Adamalicious5992d ago (Edited 5992d ago )

I think if someone buys a 40 gig PS3 and Rock Band they have no one to blame but themselves when they can't plug in all three peripherals. It says on the PS3 box that it has 2 USB ports and it says on the Rock Band box that it has 3 peripherals - if one can't do the math there then I don't know what to say. Maybe they can blame their elementary school teachers.

Someone from Harmonix was quoted recently being concerned about this, but really the onus is the consumers'. Being angry with Sony or Harmonix or EA or whomever just isn't justified. Like I said before it could be a bummer for a small number of people on Christmas morning or the like, but it's nothing to get all worked up about.

Boink5992d ago (Edited 5991d ago )

c'mon, how many parents and even kids read everything on the box before they buy it?

and I somehow doubt that the temporary minimum wage people employed by the stores for the holidays are going to bring it to their attention.

it goes down in my books as a screw up, although not sony's fault, harmonix should have included the USB hub. although when the people are ticked off, they will be looking at the ps3, not rock band. and the lack of BC will be a surpise to many, but that's a different issue.

Biphter5991d ago

3 periperals out the box

2 wired (2 USB ports needed)

1 wireless (0 USB ports needed)

Total USB ports needed for out of the box Rockband = 2

Even if you buy an extra guitar there are no problems as that will be wireless too so what exactly is the issue here?

Do the math.

judd5991d ago

Sorry, but you do need 3 usb hubs, 4 if you eventually get another guitar. Like with GH3, the wireless guitar requires the little dongle thing you plug into the USB hub. So, if you are going to be using all 3 peripherals at once, you have to have 3 USB ports.

Chubear5992d ago

If you're really into Rock Band and need to extra ports why not? It's not like you're stuck or something, not a big deal at all. Hey, there's a reason you got the 40gig and I doubt you'll be spending $200 on a game for all the peripherals when you didn't want to spend $500 on a whole console.

supaet5992d ago

I don't get it, I thought the ps3 guitar is wireless for rb.

so two usb, one for drums, one for mic, no need hub.

but still, on the ps3, you won't be able to play 4 player band locally.

the gh3 guitar doesn't work with rb, how you going to find an extra guitar to play rb? they don't sell single instruments till next year.

Adamalicious5992d ago

The wireless uses a USB dongle. They found that the bluetooth wasn't perfect enough for such a demanding rhythm game.

Biphter5991d ago

I thought Harmonix had stated recently that their Rockband Guitars are standard controllers and work with the PS3 Bluetooth tech? And go onto state that the problems with GHIII guitars and rockband are because Redoctane/Activision chose to use the non proprietary dongle (THEY stated issues with the PS3 Bluetooth, not Harmonix AFAIK).

Rock Band Doesn't Need Plastic Instruments to Work

TheGamer Writes "Harmonix has proven plenty of times it can make Rock Band work without instruments."

Christopher476d ago

I mean, yeah, but was anyone saying otherwise? The fact is people liked the plastic instruments rather than pressing buttons on a controller. They enjoyed the simulated experience.

isarai476d ago

"Work"? No, but to be good? It's absolutely necessary. Not having the accessories is like playing a lightgun shooter with an analog stick sure it works, but one experience is completely unique and fun as hell, and other is torture trying to make do playing in a way it was never meant to be played

LucasRuinedChildhood476d ago (Edited 476d ago )

"trying to make do in a way it was never meant to be played"

I disagree. The accessories were a fun gimmick (and very marketable) but they were added AFTER the genre had been well established with games like Frequency and Amplitude (both also made by Harmonix).

The gameplay formula is different on a controller - there's a focus on switching lanes and contributing to all of the instruments.

Never played Frequency, but Amplitude and Rock Band Blitz were really good. I would love to get more of that kind of game. It's basically a different part of the genre, and stands on its own.

isarai476d ago

The insurmountable difference in popularity between Amplitude and Rock Band proves my point

LucasRuinedChildhood476d ago (Edited 476d ago )

Popularity isn't proof of quality. If it was, then Harmonix wouldn't be making music for Fortnite now. lol. Our disagreement wasn't over which one is more popular. Amplitude and Blitz just aren't "torture" to play.

Rock Band 4 and Guitar Hero Live failed to revive their sub-genre, and Rock Band 4 caused Mad Catz to have to file for bankruptcy. Doesn't mean that instrument-based music games are bad.

It does mean that there's too much overhead and risk for anyone to take a gamble on a big budget game that needs instrument accessories now though.

For the genre to thrive, for now, it needs to do so without the instrument accessories. That's just a fact, unfortunately.

VR games like Beat Sabre (a new sub-genre) and traditional music games make more sense and are more viable right now.

LucasRuinedChildhood476d ago (Edited 476d ago )

*"If quality is always proved by popularity, then Harmonix wouldn't be making music for Fortnite now."

Yi-Long476d ago

I think CHEAP plastic instruments is THE reason why the instrument-genre ‘died’.

People invested in buying the game AND the peripherals, so the guitar, the dj-set, the drum, whatever, and the experience was absolutely fantastic. Great fun, great music, etc.

But then the instruments would break. A button would stop working, or your hits wouldn’t register, and that kind of hardware failure would end in you not being able to play the game as intended, and thus you not getting the scores you deserve.

So, now you had a great game, but a broken instrument, and nobody is gonna buy a new plastic instrument every 3-6 months in order to keep playing the game.

A solution would have been to release better quality instruments (obviously), at a slightly higher price, so you could have kept the new games coming and the genre alive, but sadly, that didn’t happen.

dumahim476d ago (Edited 476d ago )

The only issue I ever had with any of the hardware was the drum pedal on the original rock band set stared to crack in half. The reason I, and other friends I know who played, lost interest is they weren't putting out new tracks that we were interested in anymore. I think earlier this year I looked through the releases for the last 2 years or so, and there was maybe 3 songs I would have bought.

slayernz476d ago

Yeah I had this happen too with my drum controller, I ended up attaching a metal strip to it which fixed it up nicely.

sinspirit476d ago

Can it work? Yes. Does it compare? No.

monkey602476d ago

Bust a Groove, Gitaroo Man and Parrapa the Rappa were such good games. Neither needed any extra peripherals

Why the Guitar Hero and Rock Band Series Failed

Music rhythm games dominated the video game market in the mid-2000s. Unfortunately, the genre would fall from grace shortly after finding success.

darthv721429d ago

More like faded away than failed. Failed implies it was new and didnt take off... that is not the case. Rhythm games were hugely popular but the lights dimmed and the show is over.

You would think the current situation would cause a resurgence but im actually seeing more people picking up real instruments and learning to play. My son is one who started out on GH and now he plays real guitar.

1429d ago Replies(1)
toxic-inferno1429d ago

I also got into playing guitar through Guitar Hero and Rock Band. And I know at least three other people who did the same.

Still get Rock Band out a few times a year. I really don't think you can say it failed when they're still bring out DLC every week! They must be making enough money from it to keep the licensing going!

Abnor_Mal1428d ago

Basically the reason the artist Prince did not want his music on those types of games. As he believed it was better for kids to actually learn to play a real instrument than to play with toys that really did not teach how to read music and how to actually play an instrument correctly.

A lot of music now a days is just done on a sound board and the creator has no real clue if the music was put on a sheet in front of them to play. The term musician has taken on a new meaning in recent times.

SpeedDemon1429d ago

I lost interest when they stopped allowing you to use the controller to play with, just couldn't get into playing with the guitar.

TheHan1429d ago

Rock band 4 allows controller. Though I just bought RB4 again so I can replay my favorite music rhythm game.

SpeedDemon1429d ago

I didn't know that. I haven't played a lot of Rock Band, but have a lot of Guitar Hero, I'll definitely check it out.

addictedtochaos1429d ago

Not the sole reason, but over saturation by Activision releasing 5 GH games in one year, charging full price for all of them while only Metallica and GH5 were worth it.

cell9891428d ago

I still play the Metallica edition

Gaming4Life19811429d ago

I dont think these games failed at all. People aren't going to keep buying games and peripherals over and over. All songs need to work on either rockband or guitar hero thru updates. Guitar hero live was actually good but rockband with all its songs and same equipment killed it.

Sophisticated_Chap1429d ago

I'm sure part of the reason they faded away, at least over the long term, was that you couldn't download them digitally.
