Why Insomniac Should have Gone Multiplatform a lot Earlier

GB : Yeah, so… Resistance 3. It performed really poorly in the September NPD, and I really don’t think Insomniac were expecting the game to sell a lot in the US. SCEA released the Uncharted 3 TV Spot right when Resistance 3 came out and it really shows how much they cared about the game, and what their main priority was.

Hmm, I thought Resistance 3 sold extremely well upon release and featured in the top ten of NPD during launch month. Not bad for a PlayStation 3 exclusive title.

Abash2923d ago

What GamingBolt fails to realize is that all of Insomniacs PS3 games have sold over a million copies, some of them over 2 million, and Resistance 1 sold about 4 million.

Karooo2923d ago

That was because it was heavily bundled dude. Resistance and Ratchet franchises are pretty much finished now.

They need to create some kickass new IP for the PS3.

Silly gameAr2923d ago (Edited 2923d ago )

And, there's no guarantee going mulitplat means success. Look at Warhammer. Heard it's a great game, but it sold even less then R3, and it's on more platforms. Not saying it's not doing well.

LastDance2923d ago (Edited 2923d ago )

In my opinion, generally if a game is good(And I mean GOOD), it sells regardless of what platform it is on.

My feeling is that Resistance 2 wasn't the game it needed to be to put the franchise on-top. Which is why R3 has suffered so.

But what do I know, I just sell games for a living.

disturbing_flame2923d ago

What they fail to realize is that it's not because a studio is multiplatform that it sells automatically lot of games.
There are a lot of example of fine games that are multiplatforms that have poor sells.

Examples : Ninja Theory made an exclusive for Sony = Heavenly Sword, a game that have reach the million ships. After that NT made Enslaved and actually the game flopped badly.

Look at studios like Platinum Games, that made Vanquish, a killer TPS game. The game had also poor sales.

I think Gamingbolt made a really poor work of investigation here, very limited article with basic arguments.

DA_SHREDDER2923d ago (Edited 2923d ago )

I agree, Resistance 2 was so bad that I didn't even care about Resistance 3. But then I got it at Redbox and beat it in one day. Now I think it's one of the best fps I ever played. Now the beta wasn't all that either, but it was a huge improvement over R2. Maybe, just maybe R3 online will get better if it hasn't already. I'm being honest when I say that I wish I had the money so I could have bought R3, but it came out when other "proven" titles were about to release, imo is anything that comes out withing a month or two should be considered competition. R3 never stood a chance against COD, let alone, BF3, Skyrim, Zelda, Batman, Saints Row, Dark Souls, and even the over hyped Rage. Maybe if it came out when KZ3 came out, when all the hype was surrounding the playstation, but at this point it's all about third party games.

Iroquois_Pliskin2923d ago

I just hope they dont end up like Ninja Theory

kikizoo2923d ago

You are right abash, and R3 (great game !) has long legs (+ they don't count bundle for now)

by the way, if sony did'nt care = no bundle !

Maybe that is why insomniac left... Uncharted is Sony's new flagship IP. I barely heard about Resistence 3, and didn't know it was released for almost a week afterwards.

I frequent gaming sites enough that, I think I should have at least known. It was completely under my radar.

Sony dropped the ball on Insomniac.

SoapShoes2923d ago

Insomniac never left. One franchise will be exclusive while they continue supporting the Ratchet and Resistance universes... Where do people get this notion that they are fully multiplatform now? They will continue to make exclusives for the PS3/Sony.

Hagaf222923d ago

The low sales of R3 is Insomniac's fault. R2 was a terrible game and R3 did nothing to improve the series. The online is a complete rip of every shooter out there, literally offering nothing new to the genre or series. The resistance story is interesting but its just kinda getting boring. There were no epic battles this time around and nothing that made gamers truly love the game.

Insomniac going multiplat is just going to expand the knowledge other gamer that they make decent games, they don't make amazing games. R&C series was fun, but stale, Resistance is a promising premise but they haven't truly cashed in on it. And that new shooter they have coming out looks to be more cartoon gameplay with little innovation.

I'm sorry but I don't get the Insomniac hype. PS3 gamers will say they are amazing but look at the sales numbers, they talk but dont buy them. I've bought all 3 resistances, I've done my part, but I feel my support for IG sinking, like the milked series they produce.

Here's the Top 10 best-selling games for September 2011.
1. Madden NFL 12 (360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP)
2. Gears of War 3 (360)
3. Dead Island (360, PS3, PC)
4. FIFA Soccer 12 (360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP, 3DS)
5. NHL 12 (360, PS3)
6. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (360, PS3, PC)
7. Resistance 3 (PS3)
8. Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (Wii, 360, NDS, PS3, 3DS, PSP, PC)
9. Call of Duty: Black Ops (360, PS3, NDS, Wii, PC)
10. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine (360, PS3, PC)

As you can see Resistance 3 is at #7. Sure it made the Top 10 but with only 180k copies sold.

trouble_bubble2923d ago

Note all the multiplats R3 beat even past the top 10 US. Look at Star Wars, combined sales of Wii, 360, NDS, PS3, 3DS, PSP, PC, lol! Are Gamingbolt blind? If they broke down all those games to performances on just ONE, I repeat ONE platform instead of 3-7, the story would be entirely different. It'd be "why aren't people buying Deus Ex?" Too much expectations on exclusives.

Why do you assume the worst? Bungie went multiplat for their new IP just like Insomniac, FFS. It's okay for 3rd party devs & pubs to do exclusives AND multiplats. Konami did MGS4, Sega does Yakuza & Valkyria, Remedy did Alan Wake, Epic does Gears, Ninja Theory did Heavenly Sword, Ubisoft did Splinter Cell -both with Conviction & the new HD Collection. It's not some dropping the ball flagship inferiority complex, lol.

geddesmond2923d ago

Yeah and its only available on 1 consol. Funny thing about the resistance 3 sales talk is if you compare R3s sales with other games sales for the PS3 only there isn't much difference between them but because Resistance is a PS3 exclusive. Shitty sites looking for hits feel the need to talk about it.

Number_132923d ago

It sold less than the previous iteration which released 30 million ps3's ago. Not comparing it to other games or exclusives on other platforms, but to its own predecessor.

WhiteLightning2923d ago

I know it wouldn't make sense in a buisness point of view to them but as a gamer I would rather see the make a quality game with so called "low sales" then a game which would sell a ton MP but quality would decline.

danielle0072923d ago

Going multiplatform doesn't automatically make the quality of a game drop. There have been tons of multiplatform games that have sold well and have been very high quality games. So I don't understand what you're saying at all. I think a developer as skilled as Insomniac could have made the game function well and look pretty across both platforms. Heck, I'm expecting them to do just that with Overstrike.

ginsunuva2923d ago

Sometimes. But for r3, yes, because IG didn't even utilise the ps3 much like they did with the first two Resistance titles. R3 could have easily been done elsewhere.

WhiteLightning2923d ago

"Going multiplatform doesn't automatically make the quality of a game drop. There have been tons of multiplatform games that have sold well and have been very high quality games. So I don't understand what you're saying at all"

and theres been other MP games where they havent been good as when they were please don't act like I'm not looking at both sides, if you can't acknoledge that theres been a decrease in quality with some turned MP games then your blind. Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, GTA4 (not as good as Vice City or San Andreas) for example.

As ginsunuva has already stated R3 could of because they didn't take advantage of the PS3 like they did with Fall of Man and R2, does that mean it was a bad game, of course not but it could of been if it was a MP title then again you would think "It could of been better". If NaughtyDog was to make a MP might be good but it wouldn't be anywhere near as good as Uncharted 3 looks.

kikizoo2923d ago

"Going multiplatform doesn't automatically make the quality of a game drop"

not automatically, if the game is not optimised for ps3...but for best exclusives, being multiplatforms means obviously inferior quality (no cell, no bluray).

R3 is a great game, not sure some beautifull parts can be made on other system (for pc, yes, off course)

BitbyDeath2923d ago

@danielle007, Ninja Theory had a high quality exclusive on PS3 called "Heavenly Sword" as soon as they went multi-platform they released "Enslaved" which massively dipped in quality in both gameplay and graphics.

It does happen.

Batman AC says sit down and shut up. Red Dead and Dues Ex agree.

MrSpace2923d ago

Crysis 2 says hello...........

Oh wait...........yeah you shut up and sit down.

Some people on this site are complete dicks

iamnsuperman2923d ago

Well aren't games funded or have insomniac have tens of millions lying around. Sony invested in them and so they made games for Sony. Now EA has bought them they are being funded by EA and so now make multiplats under the EA umbrella. Its not like they could choose what they do. Its all about who ever funds them

ZombieAssassin2923d ago

EA didn't buy them IG wants to be independent, Sony's made a ton of offers but they won't sell. They just signed a 1 game deal with EA Partners (think it was just 1 game).

SoapShoes2923d ago

They weren't bought by EA nor are they making only multiplatform games. Ted Price has said they are still going to support both Ratchet and Resistance so where are you getting this BS? This isn't like Bungie, Insomniac are making one multiplatform franchise while the rest are exclusive.

ZombieAssassin2923d ago (Edited 2923d ago )

Yea going multiplat worked so well for Ninja well they now have to develop a game of an IP with an existing fanbase.

I'm all for it though IG deserve peoples money and everyone should be able to enjoy IG games.

I think R3 didn't do too great because of R2 also, I loved R1 and hated R2. Only played the BETA for 3 and do intend to eventually buy it but it lacks the quality of other ps3 exclusives.

SoapShoes2923d ago

No it doesn't. Resistance 3 is better than all of the other PS3 exclusives this year, imo. Far better than Killzone 3 and I loved that game.

e-p-ayeaH2923d ago (Edited 2923d ago )

Better than KZ3 that´s a good one.

And the best PS3 exclusive this year its Uncharted 3 of course.

SoapShoes2923d ago

I meant so far this year. Uncharted 3 will probably be my favorite with Resistance 3 right behind it at #2. It is a great game.

pumpactionpimp2923d ago

I love when a person says a game, "doesn't sell well." Then they come out with some outrageous statement like, said developer should have gone multi-platform.

When in reality they have no idea what the budget was for the game, or even what the target number was for sales. Not to mention what ever contracts insomniac might have with Sony to create games.

I hate people that can write an article as pure speculation, and pass it off as news.
