Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Review | VGW

VGW: Maybe I’m jaded, but a sarcastic chuckle escaped my lips when I opened our review copy of Ace Combat: Assault Horizon. Adorning the shrink wrap was a quote from Gamespot: “Calling it ‘Call of Duty’ in the air is underselling it.” Project Aces, the development team behind the Ace Combat series, has certainly never slouched in the production-quality department, but it has struggled to make it an essential gaming experience; struggled to hook anyone beyond fans of aerial combat. With Call of Duty jokingly called “the most casual hardcore game in existence,” and obscenely successful sales numbers to back it up, you can see where my skepticism was rooted.

So here’s the twist you’re expecting, in which your humble reviewer’s sarcasm was swiftly stifled: Ace Combat: Assault Horizon will surprise you with its variety, intensity, and accessibility, even with its nonsensical plot and uneven difficulty spikes.
