Mass Effect: Effectively Overhyped

PC World's Matt Peckham, who has just published "Mass Effect: Xbox 360 Game Doesn't Live Up to its Hype" and given a 60% rating to the game, follows up his review. He expands on why Mass Effect does not feel much like a game to him, and why it is no Baldur's Gate 2 or even Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Nice find, at least he is defending his review and showing that he indeed has played the classics. Overall great find and interesting read even though I mostly disagree with it. The interactive feel of story is really fun and great and the game is really good IMO and I'm saying this as a Baldur's Gate 2 and Fallout fan.

If any of you can remember, this guy's review of Halo 3 was also controversial because it also deviated stangely from the general consensus. He also felt compelled to issue a separate defense of his review of Halo 3. That he has been forced to do it again for ME suggests that he may have credibility issues.

Does this game have real gameplay, or is it just an interactive movie ? Because if it's the latter, it would have been way better if they just made a real movie instead.

Are people putting such a high score on ME just because they were awed at the movie sequences and the storytelling, or because of the lame gameplay?

This game isn't for everyone.
But then again, no game is for everyone...and thank god for that!
I'd hate to think that they just pumped out FPS after FPS and nothing else.
This game comes is far nearer to what I enjoy to other games like halo.
So its only reasonable to conclude that there are also people out there who'd rather play halo instead.
At lest there are companies out there trying to mix it up a bit to give us something different.

can you blame this game for being so over hyped? I mean it was a game, although lacking in the combat side, the story seemed endlessly complex from the very few videos that were shown of multiple conversation threads.

I can now say I'm not too fussed about Mass Effect and probably won't be picking it up now, but you can't blame anyone for it getting over hyped, it was a great idea that wasn't executed as greatly.

I personally feel that Bioware was not 100% finsished with the game but M$ probably gave them a deadline for the game to ship..and with GTA4 delayed this was the only game that would pick up the slack....

Whenever things don't go well someone always finds away to had the blame over to microsoft. No one ever said the game was unfinished. Also, this clown rated the game a low, others rated it high, I heard no one say, wow, microsoft game this time to get it right. Good job MS for not rushing it.

There were many Xbots praising GameSpot and GamesTM when Ratchet got a 7.5 and 6.0 respectively from those two magazines. I expect the same Xbots to consider this review as VALID. and honour their word. Except of course, PCWorld is a very reputed magazine, unlike GamesTM which gave Resistance a 5.0 and Warhawk a 6.0, and GameSpot which is known for its shoddy journalism.

By the way, I really want this game. This should just tell some of the dumb Xbots that reviews don't matter, at least not as much as theMart would want to think.

Just because one person gives it a poor review does not mean this is a bad game. All the other reviews say otherwise. Thats like me saying "Oh Ratchet and Clank sucks because it didn't get an eight". It must be a good game because the majority of reviewers have given it high scores. One person reviews this game and dosen't like it. So automatically it's "overhyped". Lair was overhyped. Game was hyped and shot down with horrid game scores. You need to listen to the majority as everyone has their own opinions and not everyone will like every game.

BTW, Ratchet was a good game. I avoided that Gamespot review. Just like how I will avoid this review.

come to the PC, but I hope BioWare issues some patches to fix some of the bugs that the reviewers are nagging on. You are making an assumption that it will be better on the PC before even having any kind of announcement of a PC version. Gears of War and Lost Planet were both more complete on the PC due to the longer development time. Funny thing, I've read some reviews that Gears is better on the 360 even with the added content and that the graphics are not leaps and bounds better.

I disagree that the 360 is useless and for poor people. The 360 is a decent priced gaming machine with a kick-ass library of games and an excellent media hub. Do you even own a 360? Because I own both a PS3 and 360 and so far the 360 still gets a majority of my gaming time. I've dropped thousands of dollars into my consoles and home theatre so your assumption that I am "poor" and "too young to know" is complete bullsh!t. I work my ass off for everything I own.

Halo's extreme hype has caused every other big-name-title that comes out to be referred to as "over-hyped". It's lame. Halo had 34 TV commercials per hour, half a million random toys and products littering the retailers, 2 articles in every game magazine, and a nation full of fanboys. Mass Effect sounds great and has generated some huge hype on its own, but as far as I know it doesn't even have ONE TV commercial... Over-Hyped isn't a phrase I would use to describe it... Now Assassin's Creed, you can probably say Over-Hyped.

I'm really looking forward to this game, I'm quite disgusted that it lacks the necessary polish, but I managed with Oblivion so I think I'll cope with this one as well.

Well ive been playing RPG games for over 16 years now and ive seen some great and some very bad ones. Now reviews like this I find quite funny because this guy is giving you all one thing which is HIS own opinion. Hey hes entitled to it. I know people who hate Star Wars, lord of the rings etc but I love them. Not every game/movie will always suit everyone. Now 2 weeks ago I was reading reviews how bad Assassins creed was and how it suffered slow frame rates etc. I got it for the 360 last friday and I honestly dont see what the reviews were on about. I really like the game! Not perfect but its good! So its all about personal taste! I will get this game and I know it will be great! Wont be a 10/10 as I know it is going to have bugs like oblivion did but it never stopped me from really enjoying the game. So my suggestion is that if you were thinking of getting this game dont let this review stop you as there are other reviews out there saying the opposite to this review. Make your own mind up.

Anyway, people need to realise that reviewers are also people (yes, actual human beings!) and have opinions just like you and me. Just because a certain opinion doesn't coinside with yours, doesn't mean that opinion is wrong or should be discarded.

So this guy obviously doesn't like the game, fair enough. Another reviewer thinks the game is great, also fair enough. It's ok to listen to what the reviewers have to say. And while you shouldn't base your decision solely on what the reviewers say, they do regularly have some valid points to make and can be usefull/helpfull in your decision.

In the end it's YOUR decision, but a little insight and feedback never hurts before spending 60$ on a game!

Sorry guys, I just played the game for three hours and found out it's overly hyped game. The first thing you will notice is the grainy picture. This grainy effect is similar to the movie 300. The aiming system sucks especially the sniper gun. Rent this one first before you decide to buy. Get the Halo3 and Bioshock in case you still haven't bought it.

In order for it to be overhyped you have to actually really want the game or be buying into the hype, wich I guess makes you the same person. I through Mass Effect would be the one 360 game Sony fanboys wouldn't talk sh@t about, whatever. Anyways on the subject its a review for a 360 game done by PC guy, why do Sony or MS fans care about this review again?

His reviews are really anti-social. It seems like this guy gets off on going against the grain. There are lots of people out there like him IRL unfortunately. They are perennially unhappy and get some sort of delight from telling other people that whatever music or movies they like are "stupid" and assuming some sort of faux intellectual superiority. It's not too hard to see what happens when you give one of them a job as a games critic. C'est la vie.

I read through his review. While I do agree with his points, the way that he goes about saying them is a bit harsh. He is very biased and seems to already have had an opinion of the game before he even played it.

While I agree with him that the game was generally overhyped by the online community, giving it a 60% is too low. I'm certainly getting tired of Bioware's "Chatting System" which is in every game they ever made. Same chat system just different story and mechanics. It is time for a rework.

I'm A VIDEOGAME FAN, I own a XBOX but, i'm mad at MS. To tell you the truth TOO HUMAN should have come out this year BECAUSE IT IS ONE HELL OF A GAME IN THE MAKING. If your moaning about the grainy effect on Mass Effect, you can turn it out in the settings bit. They only added it to make it look like an old movie and isn't Killzone 2 getting alot of hype as well? and its a standard FPS. Anyways, I own both consoles and I hope to be getting Mass Effect soon enough and then I'm getting MGS4 and Killzone 2 next year. =)

having just played through the first hour or so of the game I must say that it is not overhyped, this is a GREAT game.

However (you knew it was coming..lol)

the 360 is having some SERIOUS issues running this gem, when people talk about framerate problems they weren't kidding, this puppy stutters like an epileptic seizure, when it's bearable the framerate is jerky, when it's horrible it's practically a slide show. Overall the graphics are great and the gameplay seems pretty decent so far. More cutscenes and dialogue than I would like but they are surprisingly tolerable and sometimes interesting. I find myself digging into the storyline which is proving to be pretty decent and engaging so far. Too bad the 360 is already showing it's limitations so early into this generation. They definitely snatched a REAL CLASSIC in Mass Effect, too bad it will be more of a revelation of the consoles limitations than it's prowess.

P.S.

Id love to see this either on my high end PC or PS3. This game is AWESOME!!

first in my opinion i dont like sci fi that much, especially this boring looking sci fi (no fantasy at all) but thats my taste, so for people like me the story looks garbage.

second, the gamepay was almost never shown, and what was shown was not revolutionary, nor even a little bit fun, it looks basic and bland.
not to say its a horrid game, but its not really that good. but if a person likes it, then go head, like it love it aslong as ur happy, but dont feel like u have to press on someone so they get an impression that the game is amazing or ground breaking when its not
