PS2 games on PSN will not support Trophies and are not Remastered

Today Sony announced its PSN program ‘Only on Playstation Network’, where you get to buy exclusive content from the network. They mentioned that some PS2 games will be available on PSN like Godhand, GrimGrimoire and Odin Sphere.

Yes, but those ARE emulated games, not remastered ones. Basically they have SW PS2 emulation working for -selected- titles. Obviously these games have not been touched at all.

Adding trophies would require developers of each game to back into the game code and refactor it for native PS3 environment support, which would necessitate an almost entirely revamped engine. They might as well do an HD remaster at this point.

This would come at some great expense to the developers and result in FAR fewer PS2 games from ever reaching the store. Just be glad you can play PS2 games again (despite having to buy them again too).

In an emulator it only takes a couple of clicks to add some AA and raise the resolution and frame-rate you know.

@ JellyJelly - I love how you completely ignore the fact that the developers would have to go back into the game and re-program it for trophy support.

However, if you own a legit disc, you should get a discount from the store if you want to buy it again. Like putting the disc in the drive at the time of purchase and getting a coupon code for it. Dunno how that would work though - not sure if all PS2/PSX games have unique codes...

First of all let me remind people like you that backwards compatibility was something sony brought to us when they lunched the ps2. No other company had done it (included on the console) before them. Sure nintendo and sega had their adapters but that's what they were, meaning you had to pay extra for them IF you wanted to have BC.

The 360 has BC (which wasn't there in the begining) for some games and let me repeat SOME games and in most cases is bad. Now the PS3 had BC but some people wanted the system at a cheaper price point, so they measure the pros and cons and decide against it. If a costumer wanted BC they had the option.

Lastly let me remind you that this is something optional. Nobody is forcing you to buy this games. You can just buy a PS2 if yours doesn't work and play them the same, or if you want the convenience of having them on your PS3 HDD and accessible right on the XMB them you have that OPTION.

First of all BC was remove because PEOPLE KEPT COMPLAINING THAT THE PS3 WAS EXPENSIVE back then. PS2 Slims are so damn cheap I wonder why people are complaining that they're being denied the right to play PS2 games.....it's not like the PS2 have been phased out. I didn't buy a PS3 so I can play old games, I have enough new games coming out each month that keeps me busy from playing the old classics. I still have my PS2 alive and kicking and I barely touch it. BC is a nice feature to have but it's not something that people should complain about if they have enough COMMON SENSE.

Anyway, I am disappointed by the fact PS2 games on disk are not supported by this emulation technology. SONY can easily allow PS2 games to be played on non-BC PS3 units now that they've successfully achieved PS2 emulation. Trophies would be a nice add-on but it's just icing on the cake. The core game alone is the most important.

Not likely. It will run on its own contained emulator software similar to PS1 titles. So, in order to access XMB, you will have to exit that contained emulator first, which requires exiting the game.

Third party remasters just don't appear to have the same level of support or dedication put into them.

The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection should change that, since it's done by Bluepoint Games - the same guys that did GOW and ICO collections.

These other publishers are just throwing some low budget junk on the market for a quick buck. I don't know why, but it's almost like the guys at Sony are gamers themselves and want to make games for themselves to play too, so they aren't skimping on $hit!

Can any gamer here say that given the opportunity to make a game, they would just make some garbage for money? Or would you make a game you yourself always dreamed of, and try to eke out what little profit you could?

I love my backward compatible PS3 but it never gets used for PS2. I started playing PS2 games on PC a long time ago and would never want to go back. Every time a 'new' Wii game comes out I cringe at the terrible resolution. Increasing the resolution on PC is way better, even with the occasional lighting bug and framerate drops.

When given the option of an HD remaster, I find its worth the money for the trophies and rock-solid framerate. I wouldn't want to buy actual PS2 games digitally unless they work on Vita.

As much as I want this to be true, it's not good business to offer PS2 emulation when you're releasing HD collections as you're going to lose money. Don't get me wrong it's amazing for the consumer and I'll be doing a Kingdom Hearts marathon if it is true but some how I doubt it.

Well psp games are getting remaster, at this point I would not expect less from them.

I dont care how few and how long these remasters take as long as they are remastered.

Put it this way, many already wait a long time for psone ports as it is, and get nothing extra. So why wouldnt I wait the extra time for something better with extra?

All ps2 classics should be remaster, why because going forward thats the only thing that would make sense.

Vita is on the horizon and HDTVS are flooding homes with each passing year. Lets not backtrack now.

Remasters may take a bit, but are worth the wait, so as long as we know they are coming.
And its not like every single ps2 game will migrate psn, I mean no one expect those sports and movie titles to make a pressence on the network.

Same reason the 360 Marketplace has barebones original XBox games like Max Payne 1&2 and the PS3 has PS1 classics like Silent Hill and the odd TurboGrafx game like Bonk's Adventure.

Gamestop's selection isn't all-encompassing. I can't find the PS3 Orange Box or PS2 Red Dead Revolver anywhere in town, new or used. A digital copy would solve that problem.

Thank God Square-Enix already announced the remake of Final Fantasy X because if they have heard of this PS2 on the PS3 they would probably launch FFX(PS2) and then a few years from now they would think about a remake.

By the way , uhh ,maybe Capcom rushed to release RE4 and RE Code Veronica X in "HD" on the PSN/Live for $20 ?
It will not be funny if they launch these two games as PS2 classics for $10 or less and they also works on the VITA.

I didn't already own the games and purchase another copy for the sole purpose of getting trophies when I have the same game though. If you enjoy the game so much that you would rebuy it when you already own it, why don't you just play that instead.
