360 Magazine: Dark Souls - Why We Like To Die

Why do we enjoy this? Effectively deleting all the 'work' we've put in so far seems to set the general risk/reward gameplay model of the industry back by a decade or more.

I like my games easy with an option of skipping boss battles, I'm in it for the 'experience' not the hard graft. It's weird that anyone would play a game for the challenge ;)

Biglet4672d ago

Back to Halo on easy for you then.

jimmins4672d ago

If you like dying... well... I own a hammer. That's all I'm saying.

wenaldy4672d ago

Haha wow, unfortunately in Dark Souls you can't jump 15 meters high while shooting..

Morgue4671d ago

Or chuck grenades clear across the map or camp out in the corner waiting to snipe demons.

I'm guessing that wink at the end of your comment is meant to signify sarcasm? I hope so!

Demon Souls was a PS3 exclusive. What's 360 magazine know about either game, lol.

TopDudeMan4672d ago

Just because they're a 360 magazine doesn't mean the people who write for them can't own a PS3 lol.

Biglet4672d ago

Your logic: "They write for a 360 Magazine, therefore they cannot possibly have played a PS3 game."

Is that what you're saying? And you know promo copies and preview code of Dark Souls has been around for a while now?

Just my opinion, but having played both games, I'd say I know what I'm talking about.

chadachada1234671d ago

I'm a 360 gamer, and I OWN Demon's Souls, despite not even having the console to play it. (It's mainly for when I visit friends, many of whom have PS3s themselves).

Being writers for a 360 magazine, they know their audience far better than the average person. If they recommend the challenge for hardcore players, I think that's a good sign, not one that should be made fun of.

I've only played demon souls a little bit then got sidetracked by other games, dark souls is very compelling to me though...should I play thru demon souls first or just go ahead and jump into dark souls? Opinions welcome

chadachada1234671d ago

If possible, I'd say beat Demon's Souls first. Better be quick though, less than a week left until launch!

Going from what I've seen online, you should be good to jump into Dark Souls too. It's different, but not *too* different, meaning you'll feel like you're playing an alternate version of Demon's Souls rather than a "more-developed" one, and it won't spoil Demon's Souls fun.

Biglet4671d ago

You'll definitely benefit from playing Demon's Souls first, but like the man said, you'll kill yourself for real trying to complete it before Dark Souls comes out next week.

The prevalence of parrying: Why is it so popular?

Parrying has been creeping into more games, with almost every high-profile title of the last few years featuring it in some way.  Why?

i understand the authors frustration i'm not the best at parrying in games. not that i can't complete a game that requires it but it is a definite harder thing for me than other kinds of techniques in games. which might be the main reason it's so heavily added in games nowadays. want to make your game challenging without having to do a lot of work? just add a parry boss. (what i mean by parry boss is a boss you have to beat by parrying such that their attacks will kill you otherwise)

Dudeson113d ago (Edited 113d ago )

I always think it's fine as long as such games also have the roll/dodge panic button. But I understand the will to parry, it seems so cinematic in a fight when you pull it off.
