Steam on Xbox 360 still possible, says Valve

PC games kingpin Valve believes there is still hope for its digital portal Steam to launch on Microsoft’s Xbox system.

Chet Faliszek, a writer at the Washington studio, told Develop that the final decision was Microsoft’s to make – suggesting that Valve’s existing deal to incorporate Steam on PS3 is not binding to any exclusivity.

Asked by Develop whether Steam arrive on Microsoft’s living-room console, Faliszek replied: “Maybe, we’ll see. That’s something Microsoft will has to decide. There’s some things going on with Portal 2 right now, but we’ll see”.

Knowing M$, they probably won't let it happen.
If they do, there probably going to be some strict regulations.

StanLee3204d ago

Why would they? It's of no benefit to Microsoft only Valve. Microsoft will always maintain the only pipeline for delivering content over its service. How else can they monetize it?

Perjoss3204d ago

yes microsoft are very strict with the online service, and sony are nice and flexible, but xbox live has great uptime compared to sony and the month of downtime for psn. Maybe sony could learn a thing or 2 about security from them?

What exactly are the benefits of having Steam on console? The only thing I've caug wind of is being able to play one copy of a game on 2 different platforms. Besides that, what's the big deal?

lorianguy3204d ago

That's exactly what I was going to say. There will be restrictions, strict ones, unless MS get a wad of cash out of the deal - which valve isn't likely to pay for.

I don't know why you get disagrees. CD Projeck even said they wanted to make 360 DLC for witcher 2 free but MS wouldn't let them so Steam on 360 seems very unlikely.

lorianguy3204d ago (Edited 3204d ago )

Because it's N4G and it's populated with Xbox fanboys who will go against all logic to stick up for MS. Since they're being portrayed in a way other than good, he's gonna get disagrees. I will too for this comment. Just watch...

Edit: Yep, disagrees lol - just as I expected ;)

"Because it's N4G and it's populated with Xbox fanboys"

You're kidding right?

I think PC gamers actually outnumber 360 gamers on this site.

gamingdroid3204d ago (Edited 3204d ago )

I believe PS3 gamers also outnumber Xbox 360 gamers based on the number of forum posts.

There are about 280k posts in the PS3 section and only 71k in the Xbox 360. PC though only have 29k posts.

Ayepecks3204d ago

@ lorianguy: N4G is populated with Xbox fanboys? Is that a joke? Go look at the forums and see how many posts the PS3 section has versus the 360 section.

You're being disagreed with because your comment is stupid and you were asking for it.

iamgoatman3204d ago

Yep, always thought the sheer number of forums posts alone in the PS3 section dispels any claims that this site is somehow overrun by Xbox fanboys.

Well, maybe this is the reason:

"The PC edition of Team Fortress 2, for instance, has been updated more than 200 times through the Steam portal."

I don't want to make 200 title updates. That's a PC thing with numerous patches, but console lineage has been historically none. Small updates in-frequently is fine over the life time of the game, but freaken 200!

I like the instantness of my console, keep it that way!

"But Valve is still making efforts to help support its Xbox 360-bound customers. The company recently announced that the first batch of Portal 2 DLC would be free to download across all platforms."

iamgoatman3204d ago

I'd rather have 10 patches that fixed any and all bugs than to have none at all and be stuck with a potential broken game.

Plus Team Fortress 2 is at the extreme end of the scale in terms of updates, also a lot of those updates added content, so downloading that number of updates is a good trade off as you're getting a lot of new stuff for free.

gamingdroid3204d ago

Patches are inevitable and I rather have them fix it, but let's face it, I don't want it planned.

I don't want to buy a freaken beta.

Now and update to add content is entirely different, but why isn't it just DLC instead of an update. Updates suggest patches.

Perhaps we can have true cross-platform gaming with Valves game in the near future then? Not just PS3 to PC (Portal 2 worked fantastically well with this).

trikster403204d ago

Yeah, I don't see Microsoft loosening its grip on its online service enough to allow Valve to squeeze in. Microsoft gains nothing, while Valve wins new customers.

JohnApocalypse3204d ago

I can see that happening when Microsoft finally decided to close fuckin GFWL

lorianguy3204d ago (Edited 3204d ago )

Perhaps they should just give up on Xbox? I doubt MS will be willing to budge over anytime soon. Instead they should concentrate resources on making the PS3 to PC connection even better.

Edit: To Xbox Fanboys: Don't disagree me because your platform doesn't have steam on it. The truth hurts, you know.

PraxxtorCruel3204d ago

Moron. I don't understand you ps3 players, you keep going on about, "look at our immense amount of exclusives", yet you are always on here bashing 360.

Are the exclusives not enough to keep you busy? Or perhaps it's because they're all crap? Starting to wonder if the lot of you ps3 stand up comedians actually have a ps3?
