DICE Lashes Out at Angry BattleField 3 Fans

Things hit the fans recently on the BattleField 3 EA UK forums.

It seems that certain members of the community forum weren’t too happy when it was announced that Operation Metro was going to be the provided map during the beta testing period of the game. This announcement came AFTER DICE had previously claimed otherwise, that the Operation Metro wasn’t going to be used for beta. Apparently some fans had their hearts set on a different map to play during the beta ( one that would allow up to 64 players ) and became somewhat upset by the news.

When the complaints became loud a forum moderator shared his opinion on the matter.

You must have the Battlefield series confused with the "Bad Company" spinoffs. Since the original 1942, the game ALWAYS had 64 players online.

No it's not - the beta only has Operation Metro in Rush Mode and DICE have stated several times that Rush has a maximum player count of 32. Many people are annoyed not because they can't try out 64 player conquest for the sake of it - but because they want to see how well that amount of players can be run on their system, how well the actual game mechanics work, how much it is like previous iterations, etc. Many people on the forums just want Battlefield 3 to be the best damn FPS of the present times. By DICE not including the mode that the Battlefield series is known for that just makes no logical sense at all. If they want to sell their product why don't they show it at it's best? Just makes no sense what so ever.

I find it funny now that suddenly the Beta is now a privilege, when it used to be that beta was for TESTING to the developers benefit!

The more appropriate word is demo, and if anything these "beta's" are suppose to help us decide if we want to buy it as well i.e. dual purpose.

Comments from the developers like "To the rest of you - grow up" is just plain insulting! These are fans, your customers!

I expect more from the professionals, and the more I see from the Dice the less I like. Everything from Online Passes, to hiding footage of console graphics, to outright complaining about customers and THEN INSULTING customers....

After all, Dice said one thing and then changed their mind. Maybe they should get some real professional to manage the PR. If Activision did something like this there would be a sh!tstorm right now.

If you had to endure operation metro in the Alpha like me, you would be pissed off over its use in the beta as well.

Map is the definition of boilerplate. In fact it was downright disappointing, like a call of duty (2003) map.

I am not exaggerating, map was complete with 10 foot walls enclosing everything, behind which were mock up buildings for background filler.

the fans went and bought MoH for battlefield 3 beta. At least I did. ya sure op metro is nice and all but it's not Battlefield. It felt like a bc2 on roids which still doesn't compare to Battlefield. I'd care more if bf3 was the only game worth waiting for this year but half my excitement is reserved for skyrim so I don't mind.

I think he means it's a privilege in the sense that the beta could have been completely closed and/or exclusive to people who bought/pre-ordered MoH and bf3 on origin. The problem is that all these people who are complaining bought neither yet they are the ones who are being critical.

Again, they could have made the beta closed and most of these people wouldn't even get to try out the beta. That said, it's just a freakin' beta!! The full game comes out in a few weeks where everyone will get to try everything out!

It's both. They use it to both market their game and to do stress testing. What used to be the point of 'betas' is now the point of 'alphas'. I blame MMOs for starting this trend of betas for getting a taste of a game.

Nah, they'll be stress testing for consoles primarily, and that means sticking to a single map with a single limitation. Otherwise they would have to manage two stress tests.

Edit: Yes, it is completely unfair to PC users who want to experience 64-man maps and know how it will handle, but they are absolutely correct that there being a beta test is a privilege and not a right. There are a ton of ways they could do stress testing without doing a beta. You take the good with the bad, but I'm going to assume that there's more good to be had than bad.

Operation metro rush mode is .... BAD. I mean, its like a day of defeat map, or world at war, just a straight line in tight corridors or a short jog through an ugly ass picnic area.

You can jump around the edges of the level and look at the prop buildings outside. It was just senseless, no tactics, no vehicles besides an arcade LAV in the first section, just run n' twitch.

It was so bad I wasn't gonna get the game anymore, until i saw the Caspian border video. And this is how the gaming public is gonna experience their first taste of BF3? Bad decision.

I had a hard time getting into metro at first, because I'm more of a Conquest player, but after a few hours playing, I was really loving the map, the mode and BF3 in general.

Metro was pretty sweet, the first stage has been changed around so the attackers have more cover and can actually arm the MCOMs.

The subterranean levels are awesome, especially the second one, and the way the laser pointers look in the tunnels is breathtaking.

I'm glad everybody gets a chance to play it for free. It's pretty obvious that some people liked it, some didn't, but everybody can find out for themselves next week. I'd be sad if people had to rely on the testimony of noobs like Flavor.

Comparing two games is one thing, but I see you're not smart enough to see the difference between the games is the company's behind them. The sheer amount of entitlement that some gamers have really disappoints me. Dice is giving us an opportunity to play their game before release and give feedback. It IS a privilege to be able to be a part of that. This isn't a demo as some seem to think. No where in that post is it ever implied to be so, but some of you wish to attempt to make that distinction because you think somehow it serves your argument that you "deserve more maps". It doesn't.

Would it have been nice to be able to play a conquest map? Sure it would, but Dice has a specific plan in mind and they know what they need in order best help with the games development at this point. Again this isn't a demo for you to try and get some free play time in on whatever map you wish they had announced.

They have specific goals in mind with the beta test, and if they believe those goals are best achieved in limiting the beta to one map, than so be it.

I can't believe the amount of people that take Dice's side in this. They are trying to selling a product to us. In order to sell the most of a product, they make what WE want, not what they want. They certainly don't insult and alienate a small portion of their consumer base. For those that believe an open beta is a privilege, Dice knows what they're doing. Making the beta open isn't a nod to the fan base, but a form of advertising to put more money in their pockets. This was a poor move, and I wouldn't be surprised if this employee was fired.

And while they ARE a company who's primary target is to advertise their product and make money, the company is still made up of a group of people who have put their time and effort into making a game for people to enjoy. I personally think his response was nicely restrained. He thanked the forum members who offered constructive feedback and told the people whining about getting free access to the beta - which didn't need to be made open at all let's not forget - to grow up.

Beta is there for a reason, to test and improve an unfinished version - DICE (and any other dev) can run it in whatever way serves their needs (i.e. releasing a quality product) best!

Having a 64 player game could have and should have been priority number one for the beta to see if the servers could handle the load.. not to mention would give maximum bug/glitch finding ability.

Nope. Can't do that thou, cause this is a "privilege" not a BETA. Nope. No bug testing here. Just play the game. And deal with the bugs when the game goes live.

I cant remember a previous dice title being so spotlighted, yes there have been problems but it hasn't exactly spilled out from the general battlefield community like 3's has.

I will admit to seeing a growing sense of entitlement across a range of media. While this is acceptable with a purchase because you are spending hard earned cash, its expansion into free promotions/offers is disappointing.

As gamers in the modern gen we do expect certain things though are we deserving them? I wonder.

I kinda see it both ways. I mean, DICE did LIE - I don't know about other people, but I don't like being lied to. It upsets me to be lied to. So in that sense, I understand the fans disappointment and they should have a right to express themselves. DICE dropped the ball saying this and that and then expecting everyone to "take it with a smile" when they didn't follow through.

BUT, on the other hand, the beta is FREE and it's not really something DICE had to do, except for those of us who bought Medal Of Honor, where it's promises BETA access. Fans who didn't do any of the previously thought required things to gain access should be happy to be a part of it, no matter what map is included. Besides, why whine about it? Enjoy the BETA and 2 weeks later you buy the game with all the other maps.

I don't know what the customers wrote but whatever it is, a BETA sure as HELL ain't no PRIVILEGE. Beta testing is what videogame companies usually have to hire employees for and have to actually PAY people to do for them.
When you play a BETA for a company and give them output as to what glitches and your insight is on the subject, guess what?? YOU ARE WORKING FOR FREE.

Instead of paying you actual money the company is finding in you a better type of monkey to do the work they should be paying someone for, some monkey they don't have to pay a cent to. They pay you with the "fun" of playing their game, not money.

What a bunch of immature whiners. How can someone complain about getting early access to a beta that is for free is beyond me. The dice forum moderator was absolutely right in their well said response. The whiners should just be grateful that they received EARLY access to a FREE beta of the game.

IMO if they want the map bad enough then they can wait for the game to be released and buy a copy for themselves. It is those type of people that display that type of behavior that make me feel ashamed of being associated with them based simply on the fact of me being a gamer, and I have been playing video games for over 21+ years.

Betas are meant to give participating players the ability to try out the game and give necessary fixes on how to improve that said game.
If anything I look at a beta like an appetizer to the main course of the main game that can be created in the near future.

It's understandable that when making a game who millions will play that opinions will differ.
But the whole point is all this whining and rude complaining towards DICE when you can give feedback in a constructive matter instead of lashing out.

DICE is using hour after hour developing a game and as far as I know they are passionate doing so. Use a little empathy and give them some respect for what they are doing.
