Analysts: October sales strong, despite poor sales of PS3 exclusives

Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter believes a contributing factor to lower-than-expected software sales was a preponderance of bundled games for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation Portable. "In the aggregate, these bundles represented over 600,000 units of games that were purchased by consumers and which were not counted in the NPD software numbers for the month because the software was included 'inside the box' as part of the bundle," he said.

However, prediction market the simExchange also noted that sales were lower simply because some titles did not perform to expectations. In particular, Insomniac Games' high-profile PS3-exclusive title Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, which released October 23, hasn't thus far lived up to sales expectations.

"Ratchet & Clank Future sold only 74,500 units in October, well below an already low market expectation of 129,000 units," said simExchange analyst Jesse Divnich. In comparison, Insomniac's PS3 launch title Resistance: Fall of Man sold nearly 71,000 last November, with lifetime-to-date sales at nearly 700,000, according to NPD.

Divnich believes that continued lackluster performances from PS3-exclusive titles are having a negative impact on hardware sales for the Japanese giant. As such, Divnich believes a lot is riding on Naughty Dog's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. "Sony does have one last chance to prove itself in 2007 with its first-party titles with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, which the prediction market expects 286,000 units sold in December." Uncharted officially ships out November 19, though some retailers appear to already be stocking the anticipated action adventure.

PS3 Limps on and on3993d ago (Edited 3993d ago )

I think Sony is starting to get it right, I've seen their new games. I've seen thier new advertisments.

It's still an uphill battle for PS3, their cheapest sku is $400, XBOX 360's cheapest sku is $280. PS3 still has a ways to go but they're moving in the right direction.

I'm still baffled as to why their exclusives haven't been selling well despite lots of raving from sony fanboys.

It boggles the mind.

R&C came out on October 30!!!!!! What the hell did they expect in 2 damn days? This is absurd and appauling. It's sold nearly 180,000 units to date in america. It's sold 46,000 in Europe and 13 in japan. It's not been out but 2 damn weeks, a little over. This is just getting old

It's too bad it was a PS3 exclusive, though, because it could have done much better,

360 owners might not have snapped it up, because the cartoony look is too "kiddy" (and maybe that's why it didn't sell on the PS3, as well...I see a lot of people saying the Wii is too kiddy), but I think it would have sold a lot on the Wii. I know I, for one, would have gotten it, and I think many other Wii fans would have picked it up too.

The problem with games being exclusive is that it takes away the chances for some gamers to enjoy games, while, at the same time, reducing sales. There's always the bottom line to consider, but it is too bad R&C won't live up to expectations (games normally sell best in the first days, though, the holidays are a good time for games, as well) because it's on a console that's still far too expensive for the average Joe.

We have a way of believing that the choices others make is right, and if the exclusives don't sell, the average person will think its not worth it (and may be right..paying $10 more for a game still gets me), and unless enough games are worth it, the console isn't worth it. That leads to lower sales for exclusives. It's not a good cycle, but its one we may see develop.

Don't even try that one, everybody with a PS3 knew this game (R&C) was going to be out and NOBODY bought it . I said all along that it was a kids game and could not carry the system, I played 5 mins of the demo and I had it. Sure it looks nice but it did NOTHING for me, when I can get it for $30 bucks I will prob buy it on ebay but that's it. Why dosen't every PS3 owner have Fall Of man? THAT was one of the best games of the year and you guys did not buy it. I even think Larry Croft could be in trouble, another game that looks nice but it it fun? and folks...they want $60 bucks US for these games....I have yet to pay full price for ANY PS3 game yet and have only bought them online on ebay and Amazion

As far as software sales, we've since this for over a year now...

The lack of sales for Sony Exclusives, ...& multi's for that matter...

It begs the question: How many PS3 owners really are serious gamers & how many PS3 owners are casual users at best that really wanted cheap bluray ???

Is the attach rate for bluray movies higher than the attach rate for games for PS3 owners ???

Xbox 360: hardware to software ratio: 6.59 (hardware total sold = 6.8 million; software total sold = 44.8 million)

PS3: hardware to software ratio: 3.58 (hardware total sold = 1.9 million; software total sold = 6.8 million)

Wii: hardware to software ratio: 3.44 (hardware total sold = 4.5 million; software total sold = 15.5 million)

I'm suprised as to how little PS3 Exclusives are selling. Heavenly Sword (which is a great game) didn't sell well either. People say well, R&C has only been out a little while -- with a triple A title like that it shouldn't matter! I loved the game...I just think PS3 owners need to start buying some games;)

akaFullMetal3993d ago

wow these numbers are low, im really surprised, i mean ive been buying games like mad lately for my ps3, guitar hero 3, assasins, uncharted, ratchet and clank, cod4, just really surprising that these numbers havent been higher, maybe it is because of the huge waves of games that have been released from the end of october, my money has been going left and right, so many games came out in a length of two to 3 weeks, maybe that is why??? either way, it needs to go up, but christmas and black friday should really help i hope
